I was in a neighborhood that I didn’t know a lot about, I was starving and I was trying to figure out what to grub on. My GPS has a function to search restaurants and I saw the normal Arby’s, McD, BK, etc., then the Burrito Joint came up.
Knowing my affinity of Mexican Food, I had to give this a shot. Normal Taqueria fare with tortas, tacos, burritos etc…plus, they have gyros!

I went with the:
Burrito Al Pastor $4.45
Served with sour cream, refried beans, lettuce, pico and cheese.
It took about 3 minutes to make and they slid it over the counter with fork and knife. The burrito shell is put on the flat top or a press and had a little crispy goodness to it. It was a huge burrito; I would say a touch bigger than Chipotle.
For those of you that don’t know, Al Pastor is a marinated pork that is on the same type of spit that gyros meat is. The pork is commonly seasoned with dried chili pepper, pineapple and in many cases I have seen onions between the layers. Burrito Joint’s Al Pastor is among the best that I have had. There was a little on the side of the burrito so I was able to isolate the flavors more. Very well balanced and for those people that are afraid of spicy food, you would be ok with this.
The burrito was excellent. Refried beans will silky smooth, though I would’ve preferred about 1/2 the portion. All the produce was fresh, crispy lettuce etc. They served it with a homemade hot sauce that I enjoyed, but wasn’t wowed by.
Would I Buy It Again? Yes, easily. In fact, it is going on our Recommended: Independent list. If it is this good on my second trip, it will go into the WIBIA Hall of Fame. The majority of the people that came in ordered the carne asada, so I will give that a try next time. Based on my Al Pastor burrito, I have a lot of confidence that it will be excellent.
Also, did you notice…only $4.45? So cheap, so good!
Btw, The Burrito Joint has a lot of characteristics of a good Taqueria:
1. Mismatched chairs.
2. Soccer trophies
3. Two guys playing chess
4. TVs that don’t work
5. People pulling up their pants.
6. Cans of Coke. No need for a fancy soda machine!
7. Wood paneling.
8. At least 10 different publications in the front of the store, all in Spanish.
