Riviera Maya

[Editor's Note:  There also appears to be a scanned copy of the menu at Coupons4Indy.com's site.  There are additional coupons for the restaurant there as well.]

This downtown Fishers location used to be the home of smoke-filled breakfast placed called Papa’s, a short lived night club and a failed tavern to name a few.  During the winter, a sign was posted that Riviera Maya was coming and I watched the place slowly transformed as workers gutted the place and cut stone for weeks.  Somebody was finally putting some money in here and I eagerly waited its opening about fifteen days ago.  This is the owner’s second location outside of the original Columbus, Indiana location.  The Fishers location does not yet have a menu online, but the Columbus one I linked in this review matched Fishers with the prices being higher in Fishers.  So how is the food?

Chips and Salsa

If you can’t do the chips and salsa right, you are in big trouble.  Fortunately, the chips were a darker corn color, warm and fresh but need some salt for my own taste.  The salsa is good and picks up a punch the more you eat even though it is not heavily spiced.  The salsa is a very basic smooth textured salsa, but not runny, which is my favorite kind.  I like a little cilantro in mine, but as I said, it is a good simple salsa.

What I Got:

Burrito Loco $9.99: A large 12 inch burrito stuffed with chicken, steak, shrimp and topped with a white melted cheese that never left a heavy feeling as I ate it.  The steak was so soft that it melted in my mouth and the shrimp was marinated and cooked to perfection which is rare as most places overcook shrimp for my taste.  This is quite frankly one of my favorite burritos I have ever had and the quality of all the meats was high and cooked to perfection.  My only complaint is that the burrito did not come with rice or beans which I may request next time.

Chimichanga Acapulco $8.99: My wife got this deep fried flour filled tortilla with chicken, steak, shrimp covered in cheese and served with typical sides like beans, Pico, rice and guacamole.  I do not eat deep fried food, but tried this chimichanga and begged my wife for a second bite.  It was so good that my wife ordered it again on our second visit three nights later to celebrate my birthday.

Quesadilla Rellena $6.99: A typical quesadilla with chicken and refried beans that is served with lettuce, tomato, sour cream and guacamole.  I tried a bit of my kids’ meal they happily shared and ate some themselves.  Any time I can find a menu item that a two and three year old love, it makes the whole experience better for everyone.  By the way, the guacamole is top notch and I ordered an extra bowl for $2.50.

Fajitas Especial: $11.99: On my second trip for my birthday, I decided to give the fajita a try.  There are many variations and combinations of fajitas you can order to meet your preferences.  Not only did my fajitas come with the same good chicken, steak and shrimp I mentioned previously, but they also came with a Mexican sausage similar to chorizo but better.  Along with this combination came all of the typical menu additions you find with fajita elsewhere including grilled onions, peppers, lettuce, tomato, guacamole, sour cream, Pico, rice and beans.  This was easily two meals for $11.99 and easily my favorite fajitas when comparing them to other area restaurants.

Would I Buy It Again? Yes.  I was shocked when I walked into the place as it has been completely transformed and we were quickly seated in a spacious booth.  The fast and efficient service would be the pattern throughout dinner.  Fishers finally has a winner filling what was once and often a vacant location.  In both of my visits to Riveria Maya, the food has been very good and the service kept up with keeping my drink full and fresh chips and salsa on the table.  Both of my experiences have been very positive in the fifteen days they have been open and the parking lot is packed nightly as Fishers takes its first taste of the Riveria Maya.  With dishes ranging for the typical $8 combos to $18 fish dishes, a large menu and a family friendly atmosphere, Riveria Maya has something to offer everyone and I highly recommend you stop in a give Fishers newest restaurant a try.  I will continue to follow-up this review of other menu items each time I visit.

The Wiener’s Circle
2622 North Clark Street
Chicago, Illinois  60614

A while back, I saw a segment on this place on one of the Travel Channel’s many food shows and I was hooked.  I mean, what could be better than late night hot dogs, the city of Chicago and “entertainment”?  So, on a recent trip to Chicago for a Cubs game, some friends and I decided to give it a shot at about 10:00 p.m. (admittedly early in the night if you watch the above linked segment).

What I Got:  Double Char Dog (Chicago-style) $4.75

Before I get into the hot dog’s taste, yes I know that putting ketchup on a hot dog is considered Communist, so sue me.  I like ketchup.

As for Char Dog itself, it was two Vienna beef hot dogs (the best kind) split down the middle and then charred on a flat top grill.  The dogs were then topped with what seemed to be a chunky homemade relish, peppers, tomatoes, onions, mustard, celery salt and a pickle spear.  All of this was served on a poppy seed bun, just like you would expect from a traditional Chicago-style hot dog.

In terms of taste, the hot  dogs were meaty and tender like you would expect from a Vienna beef hot dog, but I can’t say that I’m a fan of the char flavor as it made the skin taste crunchy and somewhat burnt.  I like my hot dogs to be cooked (obviously), but the char flavor kind of detracted from the overall taste of the dog in my mind.  The toppings were semi-fresh and I have to admit, I really liked the what seemed to be homemade relish as it was chunky and flavorful.  The only other complaint I have about this dog (and Chicago-style dogs in general) is that they get so overwhelmed with all the toppings that they fall apart all over the place while you are eating them and make a huge mess.  Instead of taking in all the flavors at once as I’m sure is intended, you end up compartmentalizing everything because you have to pick up the toppings that have fallen off and eat them separately.

Would I Buy It Again?  Yes, I would.  The price is reasonable and the dog, while not the greatest thing I’ve ever eaten, was a tasty ending to a great day of drinking and watching baseball.

But, you don’t primarily go to The Wiener’s Circle for the food, although its taste is a nice added benefit.  You go to The Wiener’s Circle for the same reason that Travel Channel profiled it (see the prior linked segment).  Led by Poochie Jackson and her co-workers, the staff here is “salty” to say the least and I definitely took part in the back and forth that they show in the Travel Channel segment.

Among other things, Poochie, the staff and myself discussed my looks (I tried claiming I was a former child model for Osh Kosh B’gosh), Poochie’s genitalia (this was not my choice as she brought it up; I would have rather discussed the weather or ANYTHING else) and chocolate shakes (check out the video to see what I mean; I didn’t see one by the way).  What was funniest was when Poochie saw a kid and his family come in and told me to behave.  I know that Poochie doesn’t know me and doesn’t know that I would not be a problem (I had already seen the kid and had turned my language more G-rated), so having this very crude woman tell me to behave might be the highlight of my life.

So, if you are ever in the Wrigley Field/Lincoln Park area, are looking for a late night bite to eat that is pretty tasty and don’t find R-rated entertainment offensive, I would recommend this place.  You will definitely enjoy it and be entertained.

By the way, if you want to know what I mean by R-rated, go to YouTube and do a search for The Wiener’s Circle.  I won’t link anything here in order to keep this blog somewhat family friendly, but there are PLENTY of videos on there that people have taken on their visits that will both amuse and amaze you.  Don’t say I didn’t warn you though.

Mediterrano Cafe
5941 East 86th Street
Indianapolis, Indiana  46250

I’ve known that this place existed in Castleton for several years but never knew what it really was.  It’s in a dreary strip mall and I figured it was just a dreary place, so I never really gave it any thought.  My curiosity got the best of me one day as I was driving by and I decided to do a little internet research and much to my surprise, Mediterrano Cafe had some solid internet buzz (see Worth Your Attention’s review).  I decided that was enough for me, so I had to give it a shot.

The thing that stinks about Mediterrano Cafe is that they are open on odd hours.  For whatever reason, they’ve decided to bag dinner service and are now only open for lunch (11:00-3:00 on weekdays, 12:00-3:00 on Sundays), where they run a lunch buffet.

When you walk in here, it is pretty much no frills.  It’s very clean, which is nice, but they didn’t take a lot of time to work on the ambiance with minimal artwork and paper tablecloths.  Basically, it’s tables, chairs and a buffet line.  You walk straight to the register, pay for your food and they give you a paper Pepsi cup, your utensils and turn you loose.   All the food is hand-labeled with the Mediterranean name of the dish along with a very brief description of what each dish is made up of for those people that are unfamiliar with some things (like me).

What I Got:  Lunch Buffet with Drink $14.00.

I’m not going to walk you through the buffet and give you a taste comparison of each item like I’ve done previously but I do have some pictures and I will highlight some of the menu options that they have available.

The buffet features a lot of meat dishes such as ground beef kabobs, chicken kabobs, gyros, lamb stew and several other pasta and food mixes combining meat and vegetables (I didn’t take the greatest notes and some of the names are names that I am not entirely familiar with).

In terms of the meat dishes, I would put specific highlights on the gyros meat (tender, flavorful and perfect), the ground beef kabobs (pictured above; oddly enticing as well and juicy and flavorful), the lamb stew (pictured in the bowl above; lamb was tender but the winner was the stew sauce which was both sweet and spicy at the same time; I’ve never tasted anything quite like it and actually was using it as a sauce on some other dishes), the spicy chicken (pictured below above and to the left of the pasta; not really spicy but very tender) and the apricot chicken (chicken wrapped in a leaf and cooked and steamed).

The buffet also includes falafels (not a fan), regular white basmati rice as well as a rice mixture that included lentils and cilantro.  Other side dishes (cold) included traditional Greek salad (pictured below; loaded with feta cheese, fresh cucumbers and tomatoes), lentil salad (lentils mixed with onions and cilantro; that is it under the kabob above), cabbage salad, a parsley salad (pictured below; I would not recommend it), and some other mixed Mediterranean dishes (baba ghannouj, hummus, etc.).

In terms of bread-type things they had the typical pita bread for gyros (the pita bread seemed to be store bought and not fresh; it was the only real disappointment of the buffet).  They also had something called Spanikopita (first picture at the very top of the plate).  This was something new to me that was a mix of spinach and feta cheese in a crispy phyllo dough.  All I can say about this is that I would eat it every day of the week for the rest of my life.  Incredible.

To top it all off, the buffet also includes some vegetarian dishes (didn’t try any), a soup (didn’t try it) and also some dessert type items that included coconut cake and rice pudding.  I’m not a huge fan of either coconut cake (or anything coconut) or rice pudding and eaten alone, I still wasn’t a big fan.  When I mixed them together, I was a HUGE fan of the contrasting doughy blandness of the cake with the creamy sweetness of the rice pudding.

Would I Buy It Again?  Yes, definitely.  This really was an awesome array of tastes (the buffet was quite large) and nearly everything was delicious.  I wouldn’t go often because $14 is a bit much to spend on just myself (yes, I’m frugal), but I would go a few times a year.  Just an FYI, if you are going to go here, try to find a way to have somewhere nearby to lay down when you are done due to the fact that you are pretty much assured of walking out of Mediterrano Cafe being absolutely stuffed since you won’t be able to push yourself away from all these wonderful flavors and will end up overeating.  I really don’t see how anyone could go here for lunch and then go back to work after that.  It would take incredible self control and I know I wouldn’t be able to do it and thankfully I visited on a Sunday where I could go home and take a nap.

All in all, I’m so glad that my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to give this place a shot despite the drab exterior.  You can tell that the owners take real care and pride in putting out delicious food and they seem to have developed a regular clientele as well since the owners were interacting with the other customers as if they’ve known each other for years.  Mediterrano Cafe is a hidden gem and I would recommend that everyone give this place a try.  Chances are good that you will not regret it.

Fat Dan’s Chicago-Style Deli
815 Broad Ripple Avenue
Indianapolis, Indiana  46220
http://www.fatdansdeli.com/

I’ve had several people recommend this place to me and I’ve seen many positive reviews in the newspaper and other local magazines, so finally I decided to get off my lazy rear end and make my way down to Broad Ripple to try it out.

My first impression of the place when I walked in, or more appropriately as I was walking up to the door (they have a front porch style screen door as their front door…LOL), was “oh my god, this place SMELLS incredible.”  Turns out I was walking in just as they were taking some brisket out of the smoker and it smelled DELICIOUS.

Fat Dan’s also has a very Broad Ripple-y vibe, which really surprised me.  I expected it to be a full-on sports bar but while it did have a sports design to it, it also had that eclectic feel to it that you see everywhere in Broad Ripple.

What I Got:  Chicago Italian Beef Sandwich ($7.50) and Fries ($2.75)

Anyway, onto the Italian Beef.  All I can say about it is “WOW.”  This thing was huge and absolutely delicious.  The meat was cooked perfectly as it was tender, spicy and juicy.  Basically, it’s everything you’d ever want the meat in an Italian beef to be.  The meat was served in a perfect bread roll that was fresh (at least it seemed) and the Giardinera peppers added a nice spicy bite to the sandwich.  I ordered mine “wet” (extra juice poured on) and it was done absolutely perfectly as the sandwich was literally falling apart in my hands.  That’s my preferred way to eat an Italian beef sandwich and this one had everything going for it.  I really cannot say enough about how good this was.

I also got an order of fries and ordinarily I wouldn’t spend a lot of time talking about fries, but these fries were absurdly good.  They were hand-cut, crispy and were covered in a mix of seasonings that gave them a nice kick.  Honestly, these could have been the best fries that I’ve ever had (even better than Rally’s fries) and I would even go there just for the fries alone.  They were that freaking good.

Would I Buy It Again?  Yes, absolutely, without question. It was a bit pricey for lunch, but I don’t really care.  When you get something that was as good as BOTH the sandwich and fries were, it is worth it.  It is easily the best Italian beef in Indianapolis and I would almost venture so far as to put it up against any Italian beef that I’ve had in Chicago as well.  I may be exaggerating slightly, but not by much.

This meal was so good that I’m just going to go ahead an put this place in the Hall of Fame after one review.  I just cannot say enough good things about this place and now I cannot wait to go back and try the brisket, which according to this review, is the best thing that Fat Dan’s has on the menu.  If it is better than this Italian beef sandwich was, then I could quite possibly be making a trip into food euphoria and I am just drooling with anticipation.  I’m just glad I don’t get down to Broad Ripple often anymore, because if I did, I would go to this place constantly and I’d easily be broke and weigh 400 pounds.

Bonge’s Tavern
9830 West 280 North
Anderson, IN (Perkinsville…)
http://www.bongestavern.com/Home.html

Bonge’s opened in 1934, caught on fire, blah blah…you can read the history on the website.  Chef has a legit resume cooking at two of the better restaurants on the area.

What is interesting is that people tailgate here!!  Perkinsville is 35 minutes from anywhere.  They do not take reservations, so people will line up on the weekends for hours and tailgate in the parking lot.  You will see people with wine, cheese, beers and plenty of tailgating activities.  On a Saturday in June, your wait could be 2-3 hours.

The interior is mis-matched, vinyl table cloths, a few booths and maybe holds 75 people.  The menu is chalkboarded, however there are a few items that make the list each time.

What I Ate:

Three appetizers

The Smoked Salmon was great.  It could’ve used a little more smokiness, but it was perfectly prepared.  It was accompanied with horseradish, capers, onion, crackers…nothing out of the norm.  I liked this, but I have had it just as good at other restaurants.

The crab cake was out-of-sight good.  Perfect mixture of crab and topped with a sauce.  I can’t remember the base of the sauce (something is telling me red pepper), but it was rich and delicious.  Probably one of the better crab cakes that I have had…ever.

Sautéed morels.  A little early for morel season (visit was 3 weeks prior to this post), so I asked where they are from and was told Seattle.  They were smaller than normal morels and they warned us that there could be a little grit.   A little was a touch of an understatement.  The flavor was perfect and I liked them smaller, however there was too much sand and grit for me to recommend them.  They had a wild mushroom listed as well and I should’ve got that.

Every meal has a salad of their “world famous tomato soup.”   Father-in-law and I both ordered the soup, especially with that setup and we are glad that we did.  Pieces of tomato and a little bacon as well.  Croutons were fresh and to be honest, this is the best tomato soup that I have ever had.

My entrée was Hager Duck for $25.  Duck was cooked medium rare, wrapped in prosciutto, stuffed with cheese and roasted jalapenos and topped with their homemade barbecue sauce.  For something with barbecue, bacon and cheese, it was very refined.  The duck was cooked perfectly and it is the right blend of heat, salt and sweetness.  Really, just an amazing.  My only complaint was that it could probably work with pork as well.   I didn’t get a lot of duck flavor, but the consistency and everything was just perfect.

It was served with wild rice, cheesy potatoes, veggies and the best cornbread that you can eat.

Hager Duck

Would I Buy It Again?  Yes, easily. One of the best restaurants in the state.  There is so much awesomeness happening here, I am not sure what else to say.

Btw, my father-in-law had the beef brisket.  It was excellent as well, though it stood no match to my duck.  Also, thanks to father-in-law for picking up the tab and the opportunity for me to have a great night out.

Scotty’s Lakehouse
10158 Brooks School Road
Fishers, Indiana  46038
http://scottyslakehouse.com/

Everyone knows about the rapidly expanding Scotty’s Brewhouse and recently the owner of the Brewhouse, Scotty Wise, partnered up and opened a new concept restaurant in the Geist area called Scotty’s Lakehouse.  The Lakehouse features some of the old Scotty’s Brewhouse menu favorites like Dill Chips mixed with some gourmet bistro burgers and also Cafe Patachou breakfast on the weekends.  Also, they feature an extensive list of Indiana brewed beers on tap, so it’s a nice eclectic mix of something a little different from your usual bar/restaurant.

We’ve done a couple of reviews on Scotty’s Brewhouse previously and being that I love burgers, beers and Happy Hour, some friends and I decided to hit up the Scotty’s Lakehouse after work on a Friday recently and give this place a shot.

First Impression (not food related):  This place was packed and people were everywhere (beautiful people, young people, old people, etc.).  Whatever Scotty is doing, he seems to have found the right recipe for success because every time I go to one of his places, they are packed.  Also, the place is non-smoking, so all ages are welcome.

What I Got:  Elk Burger ($8.00) and 7 Tidals Dip ($8.75).

First was the Elk Burger.  Since this place attempts to have an unconventional and eclectic vibe, I decided to adopt that mentality and go for something other than a traditional ground beef burger and that led me to this.  The Elk Burger is served with lettuce, tomato, red onion, your choice of cheese, a pickle spear and is served on a toasted bun roll.  For my cheese, I chose blue cheese (shocking I know since I’ve gone on and on about my love of blue cheese here before).  Scotty’s blue cheese is salty, sharp and quite good.  The elk meat was slightly dry (I ordered it at the lowest done-ness level available), but that was to be expected since elk is a drier meat to begin with.  It was still flavorful though.  The toasted roll and very fresh vegetables added a nice crunch to the burger and honestly, this whole burger was a winner.

Spurred on by our excellent meal and the unbelievably fun environment, my friends and I decided to have one too many of these:

That’s 24 ounces and they go down really fast.  Anyway, after a couple hours and one too many of these, all of us started to get hungry again, so that’s when we decided to order the 7 Tidal Dip (a menu item also on the Brewhouse menu).

Served with blue corn tortilla chips and celery, this dip is made with a chicken strips, a blend of cheese (I believe I could taste my beloved blue cheese again, along with cream cheese), buffalo wing sauce and a touch of Scotty’s patented (okay, maybe he doesn’t have a patent, but he should) Mo Fo Hot sauce.

All I can say about the taste about this stuff is, “WOW.”  Creamy, thick, hearty and flavorful.  My friends and I were basically knocking each others hands out of the way in order to get to the dip faster.  This one is not going to help any diets, but when you are hammering back multiple 24 ounce beers, you don’t really care at that point.  My only complaints were that there weren’t enough chips and the chips that we did have seemed like they came out of the bottom of the bag.  A lot of them were the little crumbled up tiny ones that you usually find at the bottom.  I guess I could have actually been assertive and asked for more chips because I’m sure the server would have brought us some, but instead, I just finished off the dip with a spoon while I was sitting at the table by myself while my friends went outside and smoked.  Their sadness (and my devil’s grin) when they came back and realized the dip was gone was priceless.

Would I Buy It Again?  Yes to both of these food items and also yes to Scotty’s Lakehouse. I never used to get why people loved the whole Scotty’s concept, but my last several trips to Brewhouse have been wonderful and my trip to the Lakehouse was one of my most fun trips to a new bar/restaurant in quite a while, so I now get it.  I will be back to the Lakehouse as frequently as I can and I can’t wait until the patio opens up when it gets warmer so that I can sit outside and spend my Happy Hour in the sun.  If you hit up the Lakehouse on a Friday at 6:00 or so, your chances are probably pretty good that you’ll see me sitting somewhere by the bar drinking too many 24 ounce beers and eating tasty food.  That could be your celebrity sighting!  Okay, maybe I’m stroking my ego a bit too much there.  Ha!

Speaking of celebrity sightings, while I was at the Lakehouse the one and only Scotty Wise came up and sat at the table next to me with his wife and enjoyed his dinner.  Being the impartial reviewer (I say that with my tongue planted firmly in my cheek) that I am, I didn’t introduce myself, but it was nice to see that Scotty is a frequent patron of his establishments as well (as well as one of the better social marketers I’ve ever seen).  Scotty, if you read this, I will definitely say hi next time.

India Garden
830 Broad Ripple Avenue
Indianapolis, Indiana  46220
http://www.indiagardenindy.com/index.html

I have been to every almost every Indian lunch buffet north of Lafayette Square, so I feel confident about what I am going to say:  this is the best Indian Lunch Buffet in the city.  It is not the biggest (India Palace holds that title) however the food is quite addictive.

Lunch Buffet: $6.88, soda, $.95.

Half the buffet is a salad bar and I skipped most of that.  The selection is pretty standard:  two rices, a few currys, two naans, Chicken Tikki Masala, Palak Paneer, Tandori Chicken and a few others.

The Lamb Sahi Korma was on my plate both trips to the buffet, it was excellent.  I found all the dishes to be more flavorful/richer than other places in town.

Would I Buy It Again?  Yes, easily. This was my first visit to India Garden and it won’t be my last. Two complaints though:
1. No seafood.
2. The food could be a little hotter or stirred more.

Excellent value and the food was among the best Indian in the city.  Taj of India is a safe bet as well, but for my money, it’s India Garden.

Sorry about the pictures, I was right by the window and they had vertical blinds.  The second pic is Lamb Sahi Korma and Chicken Tikki Masala.  My two favorites.

Ale Emporium
8617 Allisonville Road
Indianapolis, Indiana 46250
http://www.ale-emporium.com/

What I Got:  Large Order of Herman Wings and Large Order of Hermanaki Wings ($18.25 each)

Some friends and I were watching some basketball and were craving some wings, so we decided to get some carry-out from the Ale Emporium in order to tide us over.

Ale Emporium has their standard buffalo wings for $17.50 for a large order, but if you are feeling adventurous you can get them in either Herman style or Hermanaki style for an extra 75 cents.  Herman style (on the right) is a spicy wing and Hermanaki style (on the left) is a sweet and spicy combination of a wing that has a twinge of teriyaki flavor (thus the Hermanaki name).

The Herman wings are somewhat similar to what you might find in a traditional chicken wing.  They are hot, but they get their heat from traditional spices like pepper (you can see the pepper on the wings in the picture) and seemingly not from anything out of the ordinary.

The Hermanaki wings also have large flakes of crushed red pepper on them, so not only are you getting the sweetness of the teriyaki sauce but you are also getting a nice spicy blast from the red pepper flakes.

What makes these wings so special and interesting is that they are LARGE (some of the meatiest wings that you can get), and they are not really all that messy because they seem like they are more of a grilled wing than a fried wing.  I don’t know the exact process of how they do it, but I suspect it is not only the traditional way of only frying the wings.  Speculation online is that they fry them first and then finish them on the grill, but no one knows as it is a restaurant secret.

While eating them, you’ll get a little grease on your fingers, but it is nothing like Hooters wings where you are covered in grease from head to toe when you finish eating them.  They are also extremely tender as well.

The wings also get served with the usual garnishments of carrots, celery and blue cheese dressing as well.  And if you’ve never had Ale Emporium’s blue cheese dressing, you are missing out.  It has huge chunks of blue cheese in it and is about as creamy of a blue cheese dressing as you can find.  I honestly could sit around and eat just this dressing as my meal as if it were a bowl of soup because it is that good.  I believe it to be homemade, but I cannot speak definitively that it is, so I’ll just leave it with my speculation.  I just wish I had been smart enough to snap a picture of the dressing as well.

Would I Buy It Again? Undoubtedly yes. I would argue that these wings are the best wings in the city of Indianapolis and would recommend that everyone cruise down to the Ale Emporium to try them out.  They can get kind of pricey for a large order (a large order is three pounds of wings), but in this case, the price is really worth it as you are getting a unique and really excellent tasting chicken wing.

Also, Ale Emporium has outstanding pizzas, so if you and a group of friends are ever in the mood for pizza and wings, you can’t really do much better than this place.  The pizzas are also huge, so no one is going to leave hungry.  They’ve also got a great beer selection and a large party room in the back as well.  This is a really good place to hang out.
