My wife and daughter have a gluten allergy, and considering there aren’t that many foods kids like to eat readily available on a gluten-free menu, we rarely get to go out to eat as a family. So my wife was pretty excited when she found out the wide gluten-free selection at Napolese. We hit it up on a Saturday on our way home from the zoo. At the time, it had slipped my mind that WIBIA already reviewed the place. Still, it doesn’t hurt to do a revisit.
What I Got: Busta Move; $13.00.
There were so many different things I wanted to try, but this one was calling my name at the time. It has sauce verde, braised pork, pickled jalapenos and mozzarella. I have no aversion to gluten, in fact I quite like my gluten — along with other toxins — so I got the regular crust. When I ordered, the waitress warned me that the sauce verde was very spicy, but instead of deterring me, that only encouraged me. Much like Indianapolis Eater, I love spicy food.
The spice delivered without overpowering. As would be expected on a pizza, the kick was more in the aftertaste than in biting into the slice initially. The pork that was under the cheese was tender and juicy, but some of it wasn’t totally covered by cheese and was dried out by the oven. Overall, though, this was a great mix.
One note in contrast to what WIBIA experienced: The crust wasn’t overly soft. In the very center, I’d say one bite off each slice, I needed to use a fork. Otherwise I was able to pick up my slices. Toward the outside, there was a good crunch, too. I’m glad I didn’t get the gluten-free variety, because I rather enjoyed the crust.
Speaking of which, I did have a slice of my wife’s pizza. She got Hamaker’s Corner, the exact same pizza WIBIA got for his initial review. Funny thing, it would appear Napolese reads the blog and took WIBIA’s input to heart. Not only did they seemingly resolve the crust issue he had, but they now have “normal” pepperoni on the pizza while also keeping the bella mushrooms whole. I agree that those were a great touch. I didn’t care for the crust at all, as I still think gluten-free crust is very bland, but those who manage their diet in such fashion are used to that. My wife, for example, didn’t mind it. The toppings were very good and I imagine I’d love getting this version with regular crust.
Would I Buy It Again? Absolutely. I would get something different, but not because I didn’t like Busta Move. I just want to try a wide variety of their items. We are already trying to figure out when we can make a return visit in order to do so.
