Puckett’s Grocery and Restaurant
500 Church Street
Nashville is a really cool town. Duh. Great music of course on every corner at every club in every genre. I’ve been lucky enough to be in Nashville several times in the last few months and hit up on Puckett’s twice. Although the name suggests the place is a grocery as well as restaurant, “grocery” items are limited to swag promoting the restaurant and maybe some BBQ sauce. If I missed the row of SpaghettiO’s and tampons well then, forgive me.
What I Had: Meat & 3 Combo with Smoked/Grilled Bologna; $9.99.
Yep, not a typo there, I had a Bologna Sandwich. Since I am the dude who likes to put just about anything in my smoker (Potato Chips., you can thank me later) I just had to try this one. Bologna is fatty of course so there is lots of potential for flavor but that same fat creates a super dense meat that in my experience does not take smoke well at all.
Puckett’s has a quite diverse menu that includes a lot of dishes that you might think of as southern favorites as well as burgers, salads and seafood but since they have a huge Southern Pride Smoker sitting in the kitchen area and 90% of the people sitting around me were eating “Meat & 3”, I assumed that they knew some secrets when it came to smoking Bologna. Ah, yeah, not so much. I mean it was a hot Bologna sandwich on white bread with lettuce, tomato and pickle. I appreciated the hash-marks from the grilling process and in all honestly that was the main source of flavor. I actually asked for some mayo and mustard in order to get some sort of flavor profile. There was no discernible smoke flavor from the bologna. Disappointed. The fries were good though.
Would I Buy It Again? This sandwich? No. Would I go back to Puckett’s? Yes. There was just too much good looking food around me to not want to return and try something different which I did, but that is for another review.
