Monon Food Company has a prime location in Broad Ripple, a solid following and has made it past the first year.  I have been there a few times as I have a group of friends that are regulars.   They have a taco menu and a regular menu that has everything from sandwiches to entrees.   On my first trip, I tried the fish tacos.   Great in concept, but something was not on point and I couldn’t put my finger on it.  This time, I went for the sandwich side of the menu.

What I Ate:  Pulled Pork Sandwich; $7.69.  Potato salad was $1.50 extra and I scammed some Mac and Cheese from my girlfriend.

Upon arrival, it looked good, smelled good and the produce was fresh.  I thought that it was odd that lettuce and tomato were on a barbecue sandwich, but whatever.   The barbecue sauce was Kansas City-ish style.  Not that hot or sweet and pretty thick.  I wonder if it is made in house.  The sandwich wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t memorable at all.   I surely have had worse, but I have had better as well.  The pork was pretty lean, I barely could find any fat at all. It was a kind reminder that if barbecue is not the core of the business, I should skip it.

The potato salad was fresh, but again…I didn’t love it either. The mac and cheese was worth the price of admission.  The keep it pretty basic as a side.  My only complaint is that it could be cheesier and less oily.  It all depends on what cheeses they are using and they weren’t listed on the menu.

Would I Buy It Again?  It is a toss up.

Here is what I like:  Great location, locally focused, casual, interesting menu, honest pricing, most sides are really good, feels healthier than most places, good service.

What I don’t like:  The food could be a step better.  I have been there three times and liked everything that I have tried (excepts the chips and salsa, which were embarrassing), but nothing is memorable.

The bottom line, it reminds me of so many restaurants here.   Good and trying to do the right thing, but it would be awesome if…

  2. I didn’t find any other reviews of this place on your site, so I don’t know what you had the last two times you were there. We’ve been there twice and both times got the tacos. We loved them! I’m pretty sure Erin’s review tipped us off to those. Have you tried the tacos?

    Also, eating outside is key. We haven’t eaten inside there.

  4. Entrée Mac and Cheese and the Fish Tacos. The Mac and Cheese was good, but it had mushrooms in it and I didn’t care for that (and I am a huge mushroom fan). The fish tacos were good (and huge), but I didn’t like the breading the fish. Again, there are always components that I really like and some that I don’t. I haven’t ate outside, all of my visits were during the fall and winter.

I ate there about 3 weeks ago- got a hawiian and chipotle fish taco and they seemed to be grilled. although they brought the wrong type of tortilla shells ( I had required corn tortillas). About 15 minutes later, they brought out one single corn tortilla, needless to say, after my dining partner was finished and told me they only had one left…so service could stand improvement imo

  8. If they serve their pulled pork with L and T that is clue number one to avoid their bbq. Any place doing that or adding cheese isn’t serious about bbq and it should be avoided when ordering. I’ve learned that lesson the hard way. Ale Emporium is a good example of this. I enjoy their other offerings though.

  12. my wife got some sort of a group deal for tacos from here – and I have to say I’m sort of dreading the redemption. hopefully my experience is better than many of the reviews lead me to expect I’m going to get… the fish tacos aren’t my style (hyperstuffed, lots of fruit salsas).

  14. I bought the groupon to eat here for tacos for 2 people and 2 soft drinks. We paid $10 for the groupon. We ordered our 2 tacos a piece, chips and salsa, and we each had a beer with the understanding we would be paying for the beer and chips and salsa. With tip, and they charged additional tax on the groupon…we ended up spending another $20. I will probably not be returning. The tacos were decent. The chips and salsa, not so much. Cheap chips. $35 for 4 tacos, 2 beers and chips and salsa is pricey!!!
