Review: Big Daddy’s
Author: WIBIA | Filed under: Food Reviews, Location: Indianapolis, IN, Tenderloin of the MonthIf you read my friend’s blog, Indianapolis Restaurant Scene, I am the “very indecisive friend” of this review. The reality is that Erin usually recommends bullshit places that include fruit as a side and serve crepes at lunch. I am a man, I eat like a man.
Big Daddy’s is the food equivalent to the Miller High Life commercials. Very straight forward bar food done really well. The servers call you “honey” and smell like Aqua Net. This is about my fifth time to Big Daddy’s and I ventured out of my usual go to of Beef Stew and went for their tenderloin.
What I Ate: Breaded Tenderloin Sandwich; $7.99.
I have had half a tenderloin from here before, so this was my second time. This is a really good tenderloin. My only issue is that this one was pounded a little too thin for my taste and it was a bit dry. A swipe of mayo would put it back on track. The odd part about this tenderloin is that they use Corn Flakes as the breading. It makes the sandwich really crispy and a bit sweetish.
Chips are out of the bag and the bun is nothing to talk about.
Would I Buy It Again? Yes, to both Big Daddy’s and the tenderloin. It is not my favorite tenderloin in the city, but it is in my top five. I really like Big Daddy’s. The service is friendly, the food is always good and I wish that I had a reason to go there more.

ha! maybe you should man up and choose a place every once in awhile.
P.S. I do like some good crepes….
Have you ever tried the Tenderloin Supreme at John’s Famous Stew? They ladle stew over a tenderloin. Some love it, I think it is good… just wondering your opinion. The Bearcat at the Stutz might also serve it, not sure…..
I had the tenderloin at the BearCats last week and it was pretty good. However, I was with a client and couldn’t take a pic. I have never been to John’s Famous Stew. I need to get over there while the weather is still cold. Stew in July, no thank you.
Will you quit teasing me and review non-regional food! Damn I want a tenderloin… =P
@Chef, where are you at? Let me see if I have anything national in the hopper and I can send that out. I have been trying to eat local when possible and cutting down on the fast food. To be honest, I haven’t ate out a lot lately, hence the lack of reviews lately.
I was kidding lol. Your site rocks and has really turned me on to a sandwich that doesn’t exist where I live. To tell the truth, other than the ham biscuit, we in Virginia can’t really lay claim to any regional foods. I will say this though, if you know of any place that ships or could finagle a recipe from your greatest Indy chef, I would gladly review a tenderloin for GrubGrade. I am a chef, but considering I have nothing to base my opinion on, I really don’t want to just try cooking the sandwich based off a random E-recipe. I do take comfort in that you can not get a half smoke though =P
@ Chef: Yes, the country ham biscuit would have to be Virginia’s claim to fame, but lets not forget our jumbo peanuts as well. Let’s also not forget that we can claim the Chesapeake Bay blue crab just the same as Baltimore can, if not more so. Crab is king along the bay in Va. Ham with red-eye gravy anyone? Pulled pork BBQ has it’s roots in southern Virginia just as much as it does in Carolina. Brunswick Stew is Virginian as well. Wachapreague Virginia is the flounder capital of the world. Don’t sell Virginia short on this subject.
It is rather shocking though. I live in pork country, and I can’t think of anywhere that serves a pork tenderloin sandwich. I’m sure somebody does somewhere around here though. .
Yeah, here in fredericksburg, the only place you can get a country ham biscuit is at Hardee’s. As for the other stuff its mediocre at best. Here in fredericksburg anyway. We do have a ton of great local restaurants, but none of them really serve anything Virginian.
I’ve never even heard of this place. By the way, there’s a restaurant in Pendleton that also uses Corn Flakes in their breading. I’m going to have to give Big Daddy’s a try!
