Contest: Indiana’s Super 46 Sandwiches
Author: indianapoliseater | Filed under: Announcements/NewsHere’s a fun little something that I saw a story about on the news this morning (also in the Indianapolis Star). Apparently the Indiana Office of Tourism and Indianapolis Monthly have teamed up to create a list of the 46 best sandwiches in Indiana and with this list, they are holding a contest to find the best sandwich in Indiana and has provided a list of 46 sandwiches from which you can cast your vote. The list and voting form for these sandwiches can be found here.
There are several longtime favorites on there that you would expect such as Shapiro’s Reuben, the double cheeseburger from Workingman’s Friend, the Boogie Monster from Boogie Burger, etc. Of course, there are options for Indiana’s state sandwich, the breaded tenderloin, on there as well.
In fact, we’ve reviewed one of the sandwiches on the list. Here’s the review:
*Beef Tongue Cheese Steak | The Local Eatery & Pub (Westfield)
I’ve had a couple of the sandwiches on there from my pre-blog review days (tenderloin from the Nickel Plate, etc.), so I think I have an inkling of what I’ll be voting for.
So, if you want to have some fun, check out the voting and cast your vote for the best sandwich. There’ll be several rounds of voting before a champion is crowned, so you’ll have to check back frequently to re-cast votes each week.

I don’t know about this list. Mug n Bun tenderloin? Good Lord. Not even housemade. They couldn’t have picked a couple of better tenderloins? None of the best ones I have had are on the list. Oh well. Good to see the Batali from Goose on the list though, what a great sandwich!
Surely Indianapolis has multitudes of better options to represent itself on the Super46 sandwich list than the frozen, deep-fried pork fritter at Mug&Bun. Tenderloin sandwiches are great. I hadn’t heard of one until I moved here 15 years ago. I am really disappointed to think any bureau of tourism for our city/state would advocate a visitor’s first experience with this icon be an industrial, mystery ‘meat and binder’ patty. There are many fine establishments that pound out fresh pork for a much tastier product.
@ Erin, mentioning the Batali got my tastebuds in the mood for a Goose visit!
I have a great idea for you guys here! How about you go out and review each of these 46 for us?
If not all 46 how about some of the ones that you haven’t reviewed here yet but mention above you had before? Love the website.
@Natalie: Will you be sending us cash and/or gas money to cover the expense of all these sandwiches and trips.
Personally though, the only ones I’ve had are the tenderloin at the Nickel Plate and the Reuben at Shapiro’s. The tenderloin was outstanding and one of the best I’ve ever had. The Reuben was okay, but not worth the hype or the price (read: $$$$$$$). Other than that, I’ve been to many of those places, but haven’t had the particular sandwich mentioned on the list, so I’m no help. Maybe some of my other fellow writers can help out?
Mug n Bun tenderloin? WTF? Are these people completely loony or what?
And…Nick’s?? Ladies and gentlemen, it’s a freakin’ fritter also.
I’m stunned. We’re giving visitors the worst of what our fair state has to offer.
I can attest to the serious amount of bacon present in the Bourbon Street BLT!
Reuben at Shaparios is good, but for $14, I can’t say that I order it that much.
Batali at goose is the bomb
Curried Chicken Salad at Taste is good (though they should’ve put the BALT on the list)
The Torta Milenese at Carniceria Guanajuato is awesome
Lugar Burger at Farm is excellent.
I get why Mug N Bun is on the list, it makes me cringe though.
I am biased, but, I think we should have at least had a mention of some sort…yes? no? I mean, we do make a lot of our our sandwiches from scratch, even our burgers. I know many of the sandwiches on this list are frozen, pre-packaged, bought stuff. I’m sad.
@Fat Dan: I agree. Your place missing from the list is another missed opportunity by the state to promote good sandwiches. I guess you just need to kiss more ass or get more whorish, undeserved publicity like some of these places do in order to get on the list.
@fat Dan. Totally agree, you should be on this list. The Datwich from Gumbo a Go Go is not on the list either.
Thanks, guys. I don’t think I’d be a pretty good whorsin type, though…I despise suck-ups. I’ll stick to the kick-ass part!
