Review: Hardee’s Big Chicken Fillet

Hardee’s
http://www.hardees.com

My favorite thing at Hardee’s is the Big Chicken Fillet.  It was the answer to our last Hardee’s Giveaway.  However, I realized that I have never reviewed it.   A chicken sandwich sounded good, so I decided it was time to blog about it.

What I Ate:
Big Chicken Fillet Combo (pretty close to $6.00 here in Indiana).
Lettuce, Tomato, Mayo and a Sesame Seed Bun.
319G Serving Size
710 Calories
38g Fat
1610 mg Sodium

The bad news is, this was one of the more disappointed ones that I have had.  I always order it with mayo, but scrape most of it off.  They put too much on it, hence the big reason for 710 calories.  This fillet was thinner than most and wasn’t as juicy.  The produce was adequate considering the time of year.  Also, every time I eat in at Hardee’s, I feel like I get screwed on fries.  This is probably a proper portion, but it seems small in that basket.

The good thing about this sandwich is that you can order it with mayo and then customize it.   Hardee’s has some pretty good sauces that you could add to this sandwich: Kickin’ Asian, Sweet Baby Ray’s, Creamy Buffalo and Buttermilk Ranch.  However, I wish they had a spicy version of this sandwich or a really spicy sauce.  Speaking of spicy, lets compare:

Wendy’s Spicy Chicken Sandwich
233G Serving Size
460 Calories
16G total fat
1330 mg Sodium

As you can see, the Hardee’s sandwich adds 86 more grams and lives up to its name.  The Wendy’s sandwich is smaller and healthier (except a disproportioned amount of sodium).   If you have a hunger like I do, I tend to gravitate to the Hardee’s sandwich, hold the mayo and eat a very healthy next meal.

Would I Buy It Again?  Sure. It is their secret weapon on the Thickburger heavy menu and one of the best chicken sandwiches in the business.  McDonald’s makes the worst chicken sandwiches and Rally’s is not far behind them.  Hardee’s, Chik-fil-A and Wendy’s are my top three when it comes down to chicken.

If you want a chicken sandwich, where do you usually go?

  1. That does look like a skimpy portion of fries, but what size did you order? I think I’ve had this sandwich once before, and it was good. It’s been a long time, though.

What do you think of BK’s Tendercrisp chicken sandwich? I can’t recall seeing any BK reviews here, so maybe you’re not a fan. I do think that the Tendercrisp, when it’s fresh, is pretty good. But BK’s produce and massive amounts of mayo just ruin it, so I usually order it plain.

  2. If I’m getting a chicken sandwich it begins and ends with Chick Fil A. Best in the business. No reason to go anywhere else unless you just have to have a chicken sandwich on a Sunday. Also, I totally agree with you about the portion of fries. I dislike places that serve their dine in meals in a basket because I think it is done to purposely limit your portion of fries. Since the fries aren’t in a distinctly sized container they feel they can skimp a little bit and no one is the wiser. If I’m paying for the medium or large fry I want to know that I’m getting it.

  3. I’m the odd-ball because I have never cared for Chick-Fil-A. Although their waffle fries with some of the honey roasted BBQ sauce is freaking awesome.

I usually go for the Original Chicken Sandwich at Burger King, add cheese and pickles.

  4. I’m nutty for Chickfila – stretches back to growing up in the SE (and when visiting family in Indy, there was the bitchin’ 2-story Chickfila in Castleton Mall). For me, their sandwiches are so small that one does not satisfy – I need a large order of nuggets… hopefully with plenty of polynesian sauce and a Dr Pepper.
After Chickfila, I find the sandwiches that are not blended/reconstituted chicken to be roughly equal (Hardee’s, Wendy’s, Arby’s etc). Followed by the nastiness that it is the original BK chicken sandwich, etc

  5. @tom h

I had almost forgotten about the 2 story Chick-Fil-A that used to be in the mall. That was a while ago. I’m pretty sure that was the first place I ever had it as well.

  6. mmmm. chick fil-a.

  7. Glad you pointed out the lack of french fry generosity in your review! As soon as I saw that photo I thought, “Whoa, a little stingy with the fries …”

  8. Have you tried the chicken breast sandwich at White Castle? Believe it or not, it is awsome good! Real breast fillet, breaded but not overly so, and tasty. It’s not large but at a $1.69–buy two! The only drawback is that they serve it with cheese on a dry bun ! I always hold the cheese and add pickle and a mayo packet (a la Chik-fil-a).

  9. Wendys. ‘Cause we don’t got no CFA here in central MO.

  10. Hardees for me (to answer your question, Wibia).

And put me in the crowd with Erin. I think Chick-Fil-A is dreadfully overrated.

  11. Oh! They have the little red plastic baskets at Hardee’s huh? They only have trays at Carl’s Jr.

If I really want a good chicken sandwich, I go to Chick-fil-A, otherwise I’ll just go cheap and get a McChicken or other similarly priced value chicken sandwich nearby.

  12. I likes me my Wendy’s spicy chicken sandwich (no mayo). I think when they first came out they had a bit more heat, which was a favorite. Still tasty now, but definitely what I order when at Wendy’s. Guess I should try the Hardee’s big chicken filet sometime.

  13. I work at Hardee’s here in Florida. Our Big Chicken is a big seller and it is pretty good, I must say. It USED to be even bigger than it is now, which oddly enough they still have the same cook time! As for the fries, we do scoop them into whatever size box you order and dump them in the basket, at least we do at our Hardee’s. That does look a bit skimpy for even a small in your pic! Anyway, I love our chicken, and aside from Hardee’s I do like BK Tendercrisp, no mayo, add cheese and tomato! I only do CFA for morning.
