Sweet pic of the front of the building…? If you are a regular around here, you know that I hold the gyro in high regard. However, they are done so poorly around Indy and I am not sure if I have anything better to report here. Independently owned, order at the counter, banquet chairs, loud TV…so far so good. Menu has picture that had to be taken with a two megapixel Kodak camera, but you could get an idea of what is happening. Kind of dumpy, but super clean…usually a good combination.
What I Ate: Gyro special (Gyro + drink and chips), $6.18 with tax. Not a bad deal really, as gyros can get a little pricey.
When it was delivered, I could already tell it wasn’t going to be that great. Unfortunately, I was right. Small cuts of lamb were buried in a ton of lettuce and sauce. The pita was warm and was an actual pita (unlike a cardboard pita pocket), so no complaints there. The problem was that there really wasn’t any flavor. Salt, pepper or anything.
Fries were straight of of a bag + seasoned salt.
Would I Buy It Again? No. It is a fair price and the staff was really kind and welcoming, but the food didn’t leave any lasting impressions. Honestly, I felt like I could’ve easily made this at home.

Does Indy have any Bosnian restaurants? If you love gyros you’ve gotta try a doner kebab, particularly the bosnian variety on lipinja (bosnian flat bread — which actually is about 2″ thick).
Oh, I forgot to say, you should take a day trip down 70 here to St. Louis and check out some bosnian fare. Check out this menu for example.
@Mike, not that I know of…and I usually have a good pulse on things. The menu looks good, though I think I would order a chicken sandwich as I am not sure how to pronounce anything else. Kidding…
I want to hit St. Louis this spring/summer. I’ll remember this post and hit you up for some ideas.
It’s a shame you didn’t get to try Gyro n Kabob two years ago. I used to go there all the time because they had an amazing lunch buffet with delicious Syrian and Lebanese-style dishes you really can’t find at other places around town. I got to know the owner, and she would give me tips on how to prepare my favorite dishes from the buffet line. But then, I started to bring my lunch a lot more to work and didn’t make it back for months. The next couple of visits, the buffet was no longer, business was down and she was talking about selling the restaurant. She’s now very understaffed and if often stuck doing all the work herself at lunch. However, though the menu is now more limited and it takes longer to get your food, the quality of her gyro meat, as well as her hummus, is still excellent. I just feel really bad when places like this start out really strong and then hit a big lag in business. I’d love to get out and support more of the great independent ethnic restaurants in the 86th and Michigan area, but somebody’s got to eat the leftovers from the previous night’s dinner.
that gyro just looks unhappy…i saw that EATHSE did a review on Al Basha, earlier in the year. I would love to see one of the wibia crew venture back and try their chicken shawarma sandwich, and do a review. It is served in the same format (pita pocket) and is incredible..maybe even better than their gyro. cheers!
Best gyros in Indy are at Sam’s Gyros and the Original Gyro Joint. Both are in Broad Ripple, however Sam’s does have a location on 96th Street. The Original Gyro Joint has the biggest gyro I have ever seen…
I vote for the Original Gyro Joint in Broad Ripple as well. I’ve never been let down there. They also have doner kebabs on the menu with the spicy red chili sauce. Glad they’ve got indoor seating now.
@JGrover: Sam’s also just opened a location at roughly 75th and Shadeland as well. They are blowing up!
I love a good gyro but that looks like a high school cafeteria entree.
@Naptown. I can’t speak to the old Gyro n Kabob, but I have seen restos get on that slippery slope at times. Too bad. I will give OGJ a try.
@Tyler.. I don’t make it over there that much, but I need to.
@J Grover.. I think a lot of people would agree with you.
This place was a huge letdown for me when I checked it out quite a while back. I had high hopes, but it was just incredibly forgettable food.
