What I Got:  Grilled Portobello ‘n Swiss SteakBurger combo (sandwich and fries); $3.99 (ordinarily $4.99, but I had a coupon).

Steak ‘n Shake introduces several new burgers a year and this one sounded intriguing, so I figured I’d give it a shot.  Here’s their description of the burger combo:

“A Double Steakburger with fresh Portobello mushrooms, seasoned on our fiery hot grill and topped with melted Swiss cheese, caramelized onions and garlic mayo. Served with fries.”

As always, well not always since restaurants often forget things, my burger did contain all of the pre-listed items, so they were off to a positive start.

As you can see from the picture above and the wrapping paper that contained the burger, this thing was a large, greasy mess.  Sometimes grease is a good thing and sometimes it is gross, but in this case, it was good because this burger was a juicy delight.  The double Steakburger patties were in the typical smashed cooking style of Steak ‘n Shake and the cheese was melted on the perfectly. The mayonnaise, while slightly runny, was tangy and added a nice biting flavor profile to the burger to compliment the other ingredients.

The only thing that stopped this burger from falling into the outstanding category were the vegetables.  The onions, although perfectly cooked on the griddle, were stringy and didn’t really add a lot of substance to the burger.  Also, I’m convinced that the mushrooms used in this burger came out of a can and were not freshly sliced and then cooked.  Now, I can’t confirm that unless I went into the kitchen, but that’s my story and I’m sticking to it!  Ha!  Anyway, had these mushrooms been fresh, they would have added a much nicer flavor to the burger as a whole.  Neither were an epic failure, but were still a disappointment nonetheless.

Would I Buy It Again?  Yeah, I would.  While the mushrooms and onions were disappointing, they were not bad.  The whole burger was a nice package and when you can get an occasional greasy, gooey, messy and comforting burger, and a large one at that, with fries for the regular price of $4.99, you really can’t lose.  Give it a shot yourself and see what you think.

  1. I had an awful experience with this burger about a year ago. I remember it like it was yesterday, seriously. I saw it on the menu, and decided to give it a try. The top bun was completely soaked through with liquid from the possibly canned mushrooms, and it ruined the whole sandwich. All I could taste was the watery mushroom juice. Blech :( I’m glad yours was good, though.

  2. I want a juicy patty… but not straight up grease – whenever I get a shiny bun that looks like it has been rolled in oil, like some weightlifter in a competition or something, no thanks.

  3. They actually are not canned. But they do precook them on the grill, as well as the onions with the butter stuff they use on certain buns (hence the ‘grease’. It’s actually butter).

This means, you get reheated mushrooms and onions. It’s impossible to get them just prepared in a timely manner. They are too cheap to hire a person to do that.

  4. The only reason we pre cook the mushroom and onions is because they take 5 minutes to cook. Most people don’t want to wait that long just to get the mushroom and onions on their Burger.
