Philadelphia Steak and Fries
5745 W 86th St
Indianapolis, IN 46278

At first glance, this appears to be a chain because it is surround by chain restaurants.  They use branded cups, however the pictures of the food and other items have an independent feel to them.  They also serve breakfast, which my father-in-law likes quite a bit.

What I Ate:  Philly Cheese Steak Combo; $7.50.  Deluxe Chicken Teriyaki Combo; around $7.50.

The sandwich is made to order as you get a number and they will call it out.  Register help was painfully long, I was using a coupon and the person was obviously new as they did not understand how to take away mayo on the Chicken Teriyaki.

Anyway, my Philly Cheese Steak was generally tasty.  I asked for a little bit of mayo and they should put it under the meat, not swirl it on top.  It looked gross to me, so I skimmed off the mayo drizzle.  The only negative was the sandwich was really salty.  The fries were too salty as well (a seasoned salt bath), so much that I didn’t finish my fries and that is a rare occasion.

I didn’t like the Chicken Teriyaki.  What turned me off was the cheap-o shredded cheese.  If I ordered this again, I would not get the deluxe version and just get meat and cheese.  However, my wife liked it just fine.

Would I Buy It Again?  Sure.  I didn’t love it, but also didn’t hate it.  The Cheese Steak is cheaper and better than Penn Station.  However, I might ask for light seasoning the next time to avoid some of the salt issues. Either way, I am inclined to default to an independent quick serve and I wish that we had more of them around.

  1. It sounds like an inferior version of the Great Steak and Potato chain. The fries don’t seem like the skin on fresh cut variety which I think is important to have at any good sandwich place.

  2. I use to work by Phildelphia Steak and Fries and I absolutely loved it. During lunch it can be a bit crowded, but the food is fantastic. I am not much of a fry person, so I can’t comment on those. The Philly Cheese Steak is outstanding. I would never roll mayo on one, but that is just me. I usually stick with steak, cheese, onions, and mushrooms. Excellent choice for review!

  3. @Brent…Just looked at Great Steak…yeah…that place looks a lot nicer. I agree, I like a little skin on.

@J Grover..I asked for a little mayo so it wouldn’t be dry, but that is what I got. That is my usual as well, steak, cheese, mushrooms and onions..

  4. Wow. Would hate to see what you get when asking for “a little extra” mayo.

  5. Is this the same that was in Fair Oaks mall in Columbus 10-20 years or so ago?

  6. I eat at Philly Steak and Fries every friday, Absolutely the Best Rueben Sandwhich around, lines do get long but always get fast service. Fries are a little salty but still good.

  7. I am from Philly born and bred. Please understand that I get that people for some reason love Indy regardless of the fact that it’s a fake ass urban environment. They linked up with their county to add to the overall pop so they are ranked number 12 now across the US. I would like to say that corn fields don’t count towards a vibrant urban scene… That being said, this restaurant is the closest thing to real “street food” I have experienced here in the mid west, and although the fries can be a bit salty, everything else is dam good because they live and die by the flat top grill… Flavor built up over the years, period point blank… tasty shit over all and they can back it up so give em a shot…. Foodie from Philly says so.
