This is my favorite in the city: $4.75 for all this and a cup of Hot and Sour soup. This is the Schezuan Beef at Sesame Chinese at 86th and Ditch.

So, what is your favorite cheap lunch? Out-of-towners are welcome to play. Just post a link!!

Well, seeing as how “cheap” can be subjective… I have to submit Yats – 1/2 & 1/2 Chili Cheese Etouffee and B&B with extra bread. Comes to $7.25 without a drink. It’s not quite as cheap as your Sesame Chinese lunch, but it is, dollar for dollar, the single best lunch I can think of… I’m talking “Last Meal” kind of good.
Super cheap lunch, Tuesday special at Church’s Fried Chicken or Popeye’s. $.99 for a leg and thigh either spicy or regular. A close second is the pretzels and pretzel dogs and Taste of Philly Pretzels. Three pretzels for $2.00 and cheese is $.50 or pretzel dog for $2.50
I haven’t had it for lunch since I moved down to Noblesville from Muncie, but I used to go to Marsh and get 2 pieces of fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans and a roll for less than 5 bucks.
beef manhattan at GT South’s
BEEF MANHATTAN
Smoked beef brisket sliced thin, served on white bread with mashed potatoes
and your choice of one side dish.
Smothered with beef gravy 6.50

@Andrew. Yats continuously wins best cheap eats…. Good choice.
@Tim – You are probably the winner here. Fried chicken can get expensive, but that is a good deal.
@Brent – Nice, I think the breast meal at KFC is +$5.00.
@ Tom H – good fall and winter dish right there…sounds good.
Gotta be the chili dog meal at Hound Dog. Sun Valley CA.
If you ever make it to Portland Oregon an awesome place to stop by is Slow Bar http://www.slowbar.net They offer a $5 Ceviche for happy hour from 3pm to 6pm. The Ceviche is amazing and always fresh. The rest of their food is really good. The menu ranges from burgers to seared tuna salad.
I can’t say whether or not it is good since I haven’t tried it yet; but I’ve heard good things about the $7.99 lunch at The Journey, a sushi and seafood buffet. I’ve been to a similar place in Seattle and I hope this one is comparable to Todai.
Has anyone been to Zachy’s Hot Dogs in Carmel?

In South Jersey a restaurant named The Adelphia has great lunches most complete for under $10 but everyday they have 2 specific meals that include drink, soup, salad (can get regular or incredible Greek salad), meal with 2 sides, great bread and dessert to $9.95. They don’t skimp either, great quality and huge portions, noone leaves without a box and not cheap food. I’ve seen crab cakes, crab stuffed flounder (the real stuff), pot roast, steaks, shrimp, etc. A huge, beautiful place with the best deal in town.
2 bean burritos, a few packs of fire sauce and a large diet pepsi for about $4 at the Bell.
Or, the daily lunch specials at Squalers are typically just $4.99. Decent ‘cue, good price.
Thai Taste lunch is good – around $7-8 and includes either salad or soup and a dessert slice of cake. I also like Marsh both for the salad bar and the deli for their lunchmeat sandwiches on various breads with all the fixings for about $5; downtown that’s a good deal. Maxine’s Chicken and Waffels has several lunch meals for around $5, my favorite being the smothered chicken, a whole chicken breast grilled or breaded & fried on mashed potatoes or rice, covered with gravy – oh my! I add a cup of frozen veggies and that is some good eating! I also think the India Garden lunch buffet is an excellent all-you-can-eat option for under $8.
I love Sichuan at 116th and Rangeline. For around $8 their lunch buffet can’t be beat, with fresh and well-seasoned Chinese dishes. Their hot and sour soup is terrific, and their cold noodle dishes are unique from other Chinese buffets. You can get a little cup of ice cream to go if you wish.
My go-to is the regular size ensalada at When Eddie Met Salad for $7.62. The pasta/salad bar at One South in the Hyatt is also a really good value at $8.00. http://www.hyatt.com/hyatt/images/hotels/indri/onesouthlunch.pdf The menu says $13.00, but I was only charged $8.00 and heard they always charge $8.00 to business people coming in on their lunch hour.
Best cheap lunch eats are banh mi. But, to find the real deal, you might have to venture our of the traditional anglo comfort zone and order from someone that does not speak english. There is a place near my work in downtown Oakland that is awesome. It is called Cam Huong (no link because they don’t have a website). But you can get a tofu banh mi for 1.75, or if you are feeling spendy the grilled pork chop is 2.50. Throw in 4 chili garlic chicken wings for 1 buck and you have a feast for 3.50 and it will hold you until a late dinner. Good filling food cheap.
Up in Oshkosh, WI, we go for Fat Mama’s Soul Food & Sandwiches. Everyday between 11am and 2pm they have 8 different lunch specials for only $3.50. You can choose from Pulled Pork & Fries, Hamburger & Fries, Pork Chop & Fries, 6 Piece Shrimp & Fries, 2 Piece Chicken & Fries, Fish Po Boy Sandwich & Fries, Pulled Pork Po Boy Sandwich & Fries, or Fish Sandwich & Fries. They also have free Kool-Aid and $1 domestic beers if you dine-in.

The best cheap lunch is most definitely the combination orders at Fast Wok on Mitthoffer and Washington St. For around $5.75 you get some of the best tasting Chinese/Thai-inspired dishes around. They have 3 menus that they rotate on a daily basis. A combination gets you 2 choices of entrees and a large helping of Chicken Fried Rice or steamed rice. I suggest going on Tuesdays, Thursdays, or Saturdays and getting the Pad Pede Nir in double portion. This is some of the spiciest beef I’ve had in quite some time. Adding a large coke to the order is about $1.20 and they also have cheese rangoons at 5/$1.20 and decent egg rolls as well.
Mama’s House is great for Korean. For $5.99 you get a huge entree and four bowls of pickled vegetables to snack on along with your meal. It’s located at Post Road and Pendleton Pike in a little strip mall. I LOVE this place! They are so friendly.
I’ve been once, didn’t wow me, but long overdue to give it another try.
