Review: Taco Bell Chicken Flatbread Sandwich

Author: indianapoliseater | Filed under: Food Reviews

For someone that LOVES Taco Bell, I was thinking recently how odd it is that I haven’t been there in a while.  So, since I was sort of craving it and saw that they had introduced a new menu item, I thought I’d make a visit over this past Labor Day weekend.

What I Got:  Chicken Flatbread Sandwich, $0.99.

To Taco Bell’s credit, they are pretty creative in finding ways to use existing ingredients that they have on hand to create new menu items.  Along those lines, they now have joined the flatbread craze and created this new “sandwich” that they are currently running on promotion.  According to their website, it consists of:

“Warm, square-cut flatbread, filled with marinated all-white-meat chicken, and a melty three-cheese blend of cheddar, pepper jack, and mozzarella topped off with flavorful chipotle sauce and melted to perfection to seal in the flavor.”

As always with Taco Bell, I can confirm that all of these things were in my sandwich (it still feels funny to me to use sandwich and Taco Bell in the same sentence), so the presentation was nailed.  The taste component was nailed as well as the flatbread was both warm and soft, the cheese was perfectly melted, the chicken was tender and the chipotle sauce taste was definitely noticeable.  Although, I will say that the chipotle sauce tasted more of sour cream to me and that’s not a positive in my book because I am not a fan of sour cream.  Still, even with that drawback, I will say that this was not bad.  It’s not earth-shattering in any shape or form, but it is a decent menu item, especially when you consider it is only 99 cents.

Would I Buy It Again?  No, probably not.  While it tastes fine and it definitely does not cost much, there is nothing inherently memorable about the experience that would get me to order this “sandwich” again.  I’d much rather stick to tacos, burritos, etc. before I went and ordered another one of these.  If you are looking to mix it up with your Taco Bell order from time to time, go ahead and order one of these.  If not and you aren’t curious, don’t waste your time.  Trust me, you’ll have no regrets.

  1. Taco Bell always falls just outside the realm of fast food joints that I consider when I’m hungry. I don’t know exactly what it is, but it just never sounds that good. I think the last time I went there was when they had the black taco shells. I almost went for the cantina tacos, but then I read quite a few bad reviews. I’m still waiting for Taco Bell to come out with something really different (different ingredients)… Good review, btw :)

  2. that sandwich just looks sad.

  3. Just looks like the bread part overwhelms the rest of the sandwich. I’d rather be heavy on toppings.

  4. @Show: Yeah, this is definitely a bread lovers sandwich. There were just enough topping to not make it embarrassing, but the flatbread was the dominating taste.

  5. I love me a run to the border every now and then. my favorite item at taco bell is probably the beef gordita (the unfried, flatbread-ish one) – but IMO it is one of the worst values… and as with so many taco bell items, it is hit-or-miss so far as how it is filled.

  6. I tried the sandwich, it was ok and prepared exactly as described. But like you said, it was just a little boring. I think I would have enjoyed it more if they put in some lettuce and tomatoes, perhaps some green onions? The bread reminded me of the shell that they use for the gordita, just square. I love the gordita, btw. The cheesy gordita crunch and crunch wrap are two of my favorites when I indulge in the Bell.

  7. ..i think its pretty good. ..kinda spicy tho. ..i’m eating one right now :)

  8. I was surprised to read several negative reviews of the sandwich, because I liked it so much that I did something I never do with food – I got on the internet to see if anyone had commented on it – it’s just the kind of idea I never get, so I think there must be something to the sandwich. I wouldn’t add veggies to it because I feel it would detract from the taste and texture. I like the bread and the chicken; I wouldn’t toast the bread because then it would be too much like a quesadilla or a panini, which is too familiar. I think what I like best is the sauce which tastes unique and I like its feel which is different from plain melted cheese. To me the sandwich was a pleasant surprise. I wish I saw someone else be excited about it :-( but I’ll over it :-p

  9. I, too cannot believe the negative replies. My wife and I had one, and like them so much, we wen’t back 3 days later and each had them again.

  10. I LOVE IT! The chipolte sauce just puts it over the top for me! I’ve eaten about 8 of them now since they came out. Someone asked me what it tasted like and I described it as a non grilled chicken quesadilla with gordita bread and a noticeable spicy sauce.

  11. absolutely love this! got it with double chicken and it was fabulous. can’t wait to go back and order it again

  13. Maybe it’s because Hawaii is sorely lacking good Mexican restaurants, but I love this thing. Introduced it to a bunch of my coworkers, and they love it too. Hell, my girl tried it for the first time a few days ago, and she thinks it’s great. Much better than their cantina-style taco– I’d rather let a blind man with a seizure disorder perform a vasectomy on me than eat one of those again…

  14. Now that these sandwiches are gone, I’m so disappointed. I was seriously addicted to these things. Before they created this sandwich, I always dreaded going to Taco Bell (my family likes this restaurant so we go there somewhat frequently) because there’s nothing there that I like. However, once I tasted this sandwich—holy crap—I couldn’t get enough.

So, now I shall return to dreading visits to Taco Bell. Damn you!

I really hope this bring this sandwich back.

I second this comment. I’ve never done anything of this sort either, but I gotta say…these sandwiches were amazing, even if they were simple little things I loved them. Taco Bell just isnt the same without them. I hope very much that they bring them back.

  16. I LOVED this sandwich…ate it so much and so upset when it was taken away…….well not really it was just a fast food sandwich…but it was good and def want it to come back.

  17. I was so upset when they took this sandwich away that I yelled at the poor person taking my order. It was the best thing taco bell has ever offered.

  18. I would not waste my .99 on another flatbread. Yep, all I mainly got was bread. Maybe a tablespoon full of filling. It was about 90% bread. Certainly does not look like what they advertise on the sign. What happened to “truth in advertising”?

  19. I LOVE the flatbreads so I don’t get all the negative comments, you clearly don’t know good food.
