Brozinni Pizzeria

After a trip to eat the Big Donut, Indianapolis Eater, mini-wibia and I needed to grab some lunch.   Smokin’ DB already reviewed Brozinni and I have heard rave reviews from a lot of people as well.   So, we made the quick jaunt down I-65 on a Sunday afternoon.

If you read the blog, you should know that I love pizza and New York pizza by the slice.  However, I am uber-critical of it and I think that Indy has some of the worst New York pizza that I have ever had.

What I Got:  One slice of sausage, mushroom and pepperoni,  $3.75.

The pizzas are twenty inches across and cut into six slices.  One slice should cure the average appetite, but I would probably down two if I didn’t just eat a twelve inch doughnut.

So how did it taste?  AWESOME!   The crust allowed for a perfect fold and held the ingredients well.   The sauce was very balanced and there was a good amount on it.  You could see full pieces of fennel in the sausage and the pepperoni was cut a little thicker than what you would get at some chains.

My only compliant is that they needed to push the toppings closer to the crust.   Other parts of the pizza looked better, but my slice was a little skimpy towards the edge.  However, it left some real estate for mini wibia to sample some a few small bites of crust and he enjoyed it as well.

Would I Buy It Again? Yes and it makes it on the the Hall of Fame.   This place is legit.  They have pizza by the slice everyday for lunch and you just can’t beat it.  Everything looked great and I am looking forward to going back for more.  It is a solid 45 minute drive for me and I am trying to figure out how to justify another visit.  If I am south of I-70…I am already starting to think about it…  ha…

  1. hahaha. i knew you’d like it :)

  2. Maybe the best pizza that I have ever had.

  3. That’s still Indianapolis since it’s north of County Line Road.

  4. Pizza looks delish, baby looks adorable! Great review, thanks :)

  5. Is WB Pizza at 62nd/Allisonville on your list? I didn’t notice it in the archives. It should be if not already, plus it has half your namesake on the side of the building. Great thin crust with hand rolled edge.

  7. That pizza does look good in the pick, but the topping distribution looks a little rushed. That’s one big slice of pizza as well. I’m a huge fan of New York style pizza, as nothing else comes close. Sadly it seems the farther you travel from the East Coast, the less your chances are of finding a good N.Y. style slice of pie. This will have to go into my travel notes, as I may be taking a job driving over the road in an 18 wheeler, and your area is a possible delivery destination(hopefully I get a local route though).

How does the sauce taste? I don’t mind a spicy, herb infused sauce, and sometimes pizza sauce can make or break a pizza. Just as much so as the crust.

  8. @Raiders Rushed….good way to say it. It was difficult to get a handle on the sauce since their was so much sausage…and then crust. I find that a lot of traditional NY Sauce can be too sweet…maybe it’s just me.

Good luck on the new route.

  10. I like Brozzini’s, though I rank it as above average, but nothing spectacular. FYI: There is a new pizza place called Sammy’s Pizza in the strip mall just south of the one Brozzini is in (SW corner of Emerson and County Line). It was another pizza place that I believe didn’t make it. We tried it and it was pretty good. It is different than Brozzini, but I would rank it about equal in tastes, value, etc..

  11. Okay, you guys have convinced me… I have to find my way down to the south side for a slice….

  12. Based on the chatter here I checked out Brozzini’s. NY style pizza is my favorite thing in the world foodwise. I like mine plain cheese only, though.

I thought it was pretty good. But I do wonder if the missing pepperoni and sausage, which have been mentioned in the two reviews as highlights of this pizza, were part of the reason I wasn’t totally wowed.

The crust was just a tad chewier than I’d like, but I can forgive that if it’s got the accompanying crispness in place. Didn’t get that. The other issue was taste – very good, just not GREAT.

Overall, I’d like to try it again, but as of now, not great enough to make the drive across town, past so many wonderful restaurants just for Brozzini’s. But if it was in my neck o’ the woods I’d go there frequently.

Also, WB – highly recommended – has a new-ish ultra thin crust and it is FAB. Not a cracker crust – I don’t like that. Indianapolis Amy did a review and has mouth-watering pics – hope you don’t mind me providing the link. http://indianapolisamy.typepad.com/indyamy/2010/03/my-entry-1.html

I also tried Perugini’s (west side) based on a reader comment on I think the Giorgio’s post. Very good pizza. I tried both NY style and Chicago style. It’s far from my house and it was carried out, so it suffered I bit. But you cannot beat a 14″ 1-topping for $5 – they do this special every day, all day. Sadly they used canned mushrooms. I need to try it fresh/in-house to judge properly.

For me, Giorgio’s is still the best NY style in Indy.

  13. Pizza looks really good, fresh mushrooms and not the rubber ones from the can. Your son is gorgeous! Based on the teeth he is showing, I think the molars are coming soon…. there’s your excuse, good pizza crust is great for teething.

  14. Bad thing for me is this place is 5 minutes from my house. Not good for the waist line, but damn good stuff!
