I’m always hesitant to review Chinese takeout places because there are so many of them (I saw on Food Tech the other day that there are more Chinese takeout restaurants in America than all McDonald’s, Burger Kings and Wendy’s combined) and they all essentially have the same menu, but this one inspired such strong feelings in me that I felt the need to do a review.
What I Got: General Tso’s Chicken Combo (served with Pork Fried Rice, Egg Roll and a Fortune Cookie) $6.99
Okay, so General Tso’s Chicken is a boring order and you can get it anywhere, but the reason I review this is because you cannot get General’s Chicken that tastes like the one here.
The picture is slightly blurry but the first difference between this General’s Chicken and all the others I’ve had a various takeout places throughout the years is that this one is more of a red color as opposed to the deep brown that I get at most other places.
Also, this one seems to have a hotter/spicier taste because of the prevalent addition of the red pepper flakes that you can see in the photo. Even with the red pepper flakes, the spice is more of a sweet spice than it is a plain hot spice that an ordinary order of General’s Chicken provides. Being that I’ve developed a major taste for sweetness (in addition to heat), this is right up my alley.
Last, but not least, the chicken itself is more tender when I get it from Hong Kong Cuisine. Most other places I go to fry the heck out of it in their woks and then the chicken is more crispy and crunchy than it is tender. Hong Kong Cuisine’s is spicier, softer, chewier and just plain better.
As for the rest of the meal, the rice was soft and well-cooked with huge chunks of pork you can see them in the picture. The vegetables were cooked well, although there was nothing overly outstanding about them. You could say the same thing about the egg roll: good but not outstanding.
Would I Buy It Again? Yes, without a doubt. I’ve gotten this order many times before and I will continue to get it when I order from this place (I don’t live near it, so I only get it when I am visiting friends that live closer to it). When I go to other Chinese places, I like to mix up my order and get lo mein, sweet and sour chicken, etc., but I will always get this when I go to Hong Kong Cuisine.
One more thing: Hong Kong Cuisine has a more varied menu than your standard Chinese takeout place (I wish they had a website I could point you to). So much so that they even have buffalo wings. LOL! I may get the duck next time to try something different, but I doubt it. Ha!

Looks tasty
The China Inn in my hometown of Crawfordsville, IN makes a really delicious General Tso’s chicken. That’s my standard Chinese-American comfort food!
When I need my Chinese fix, they are the best! It makes the other similar Chinese-American restaurants taste like Kung Pao Kitty…
Regrettably the local Chinese place near me serves garbage and tries to pass it off as food. All of their veggies are frozen generics purchased at the chain grocery store next door. How else do they get the carrots in perfect cubes like that?!? A neighbor recently contracted food poisoning from the ill-prepared chicken there. Quite frankly, if you’re in Illinois and have a King Wok franchise near you… defecate in your hand and eat that. It’s probably safer. Sorry to rant, but I miss decent Chinese take-away.
I’ve eaten at Hong Kong Cuisine a few times when I’ve been in that part of Fishers. I’ve been really impressed with it each time. While our standard Chinese place is Dragon House, which also is excellent, Hong Kong Cuisine is a welcome change of pace.
How are there dumplings? I’ve been looking for a place since I moved down here that has really good steamed dumplings.
@Brent: I’ve only had their dumplings a couple of times and there’s nothing overly special about them. They aren’t bad and you won’t regret ordering them, but they are not a “must have” when you go there.
@J Grover: You may or may not have been with me when I had this meal. Ha!
Looks exactly like the General Tso’s they make at the local Chinese place I used to deliver for.
This is what we refer to as the “Good General Tso’s”. The place on the other side of town makes the browner, bolder, less sweet, and more “earthy” version that is just plain gross.
Haha, that has got to be one of the most generic (yet somewhat misleading) restaurant names out there.
Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever had General Tso’s chicken ever. Is it like Panda Express’s Orange chicken?
I have been to Hong Kong several times and although my last experience was not positive including cold food, I still believe it is the best choice in Fishers for Asian food.
@Q: I could not tell you how it compared to Panda Express’ Orange chicken because I’ve only eaten there twice and have been disgusted each time. If there was ever a need for a definition of a faux-Chinese place that gives Chinese food a bad name with how Americanized and pathetic it is, Panda Express would be that place.
This reminds me of the amazing Chinese restaurant I grew up with, called Magic Wok. Actually that is the former name — it was renamed Mr. Wok but still has the same staff and such. The red-ish sweet and spicy sauce with peppers certainly is THE BEST General Tso’s. They also have the best pork fried rice ever… I could eat it by itself as a meal.
I love this place! You can see a menu on coupons4indy.com
I’ve not thought this place to be a great one. The food is OK but not really great. It looks a bit dirty and the lady that handles all the money also handles your food. She never washes her hands. Also, the lady has a young daughter that essentially lives in the restaurant, goes back to the food area once in a while, and never washes either. It’s a bit disgusting. The child is growing up in the restaurant, in that one table in the corner. I wonder if the county ever sends a health inspector there.
I’ve been looking for good chow mein (with bean sprouts) and also for Hong Sue Gai (Chicken). Lotus Garden in Greenwood, Indiana used to make both of these dishes- and they were excellent. I’m no longer close to Lotus Garden. I’m in the Noblesville, Indiana area. Can’t find good Hong Sue Gai. I’d be grateful for some suggestions.
