Review: Culver’s Pepper Grinder Bacon Chicken Sandwich
Author: indianapoliseater | Filed under: Food ReviewsIt’s been hotter than heck around here recently and I’ve been on a big ice cream kick because of it. One of my go-to ice cream treats is a Culver’s Concrete Mixer and since I was already at Culver’s getting myself a Concrete Mixer this past weekend, I figured I would give their new Pepper Grinder Bacon Chicken sandwich a try while I was there.
What I Got: Pepper Grinder Bacon Chicken Sandwich Value Basket, $7.95 (sandwich, medium fries and a medium drink).
Just like the sandwich from my last Culver’s visit, Culver’s advertises this new sandwich with an annoying little jingle on their website. If you go to the website, you’ll hear the awful jingle and you’ll see that the sandwich is offered with the option of getting it as their signature ButterBurger or as a chicken sandwich. Since I was not in a burger type of mood, I got the chicken sandwich.
The sandwich consists of a chicken breast with spicy cheese, crispy bacon and their “signature four peppercorn mayo” all served on a hoagie type sub roll, which I thought was an odd roll choice for the sandwich.
Anyway, in terms of taste, I would have to say this is pretty good. Not that I was expecting it to be bland, but the mayo had a really nice peppery kick to it. If you aren’t expecting a kickback from the taste, it will really surprise you because it does give a nice kick. The cheese also adds a firm kick as well. It’s not going to kill you, but it is nice. The chicken, while not particularly tender, was cooked well enough that it didn’t taste like a hockey puck. The bacon, while physically there, was not especially noticeable in actual taste the sandwich.
Would I Buy It Again? Yeah, I probably would if I was looking for something outside the realm of a regular burger. This sandwich had enough flavor that it is something to order again if you are looking for something more than a bland burger or a regular chicken sandwich. It’s not particularly memorable, but it is not bad either.
My only complaint is not so much about the sandwich, but Culver’s in general. Culver’s has good food and I appreciate that, but what sort of upsets me is the price because Culver’s can get expensive at nearly $8 for a combo! Oh well, I’ll keep doing it though because of my beloved Concrete Mixers. Mmmm…cold, creamy frozen custard…

I agree about Culver’s having high prices. I got a fish sandwich once, and it was yummy but TINY – like, 4 bites tiny. Not worth $4.
Their chocolate custard makes it all worth it though.
What really kills me about Culver’s is that they appear to have taken their awesome Bananas Foster sundae dessert off the menu except for “special promotions”. Considering the high prices, that (and occasionally the pot roast sandwich) were the only things about their menu that I found sufficiently unique or interesting enough to justify return trips. Now that the Foster is gone…meh, it’s just another fast food joint, although a slightly better one than average.
