In my quest for Indy’s best Indian buffet, I decided to stop by the highly recommended India Sizzling. This is right next to Al-Basha. I felt kind of awkward since it was July 4th, as if I should be eating burgers and hot dogs, but I got around to that later in the day.
First impression when walking in was…hmm…this place is pretty nice. It was immaculately clean and a very comfortable setting. Definitely the nicest “box” out of the Indian restos in Indy.
The buffet consisted of many of the standard chicken tikki masala, tandori chicken, a few vegetarian dishes, some pakora etc and a few surprises like a stewed goat dish. I was particularly fond of a breaded chicken chili that they had and the chicken tikki masala was one of the best in the city. Everything on the buffet was fresh and warm, which you would assume that it would be, but in many cases it is not at buffets. Honestly, there wasn’t anything that I disliked and the buffet was just the right size, I had a small tasting of everything.
I rarely talk about service, but it was so disappointing here that it greatly impacted the meal. I ordered a Diet Coke and it was never refilled, despite me asking for it. However, I was charged full price for it. They were about 80% capacity in the restaurant, so it was pretty busy. However, I found that there were tables that were getting a lot more attention than ours…and those tables may or may not have appeared to be of Indian descent. It just felt weird…not sure how else to say it.
Would I Buy It Again? One more chance. The food was really solid and I would go as far to say that it was my favorite Indian buffet in Indy based on the food alone. However, I just didn’t feel welcomed.

I’ve had this buffet at least 3 times with my husband. We are of Indian descent and found the food to be a good representation of nicely-done Indian restaurant food (meaning, it’s not what most Indians eat at home). I have to say the service is pretty spotty at this place. Once, we had fantastic service, the other couple times, not so great.
Did you ever get the dosa and fresh naan brought out to your table? I find this to be one of the nicer qualities of this buffet over others in the city.
Thanks for the review.
Holly is a HUGE fan of Indian food, me, I can take it or leave it. Maybe I should take her here, I think she’s really like it.
Although I was a big fan of Taj of India, the next time I hit an Indian buffet, I think it will be this one. It also doesn’t hurt that they have coupons for the buffet online as well at http://www.coupons4indy.com/AcctCoupons-117412.11312_India_Sizzling_Exotic_Cuisine.html.
My little brother jusdt got back from NYC and a family vacation with his kids. He raved about an Indian place called Devi. Why am I writing about a place in NYC? Well, it seems that if the WIBIA travel budget could spring to review San Francisco restaurants perhaps there is a trip to the Apple in the offing? I will include one usable piece of information to your readers – there is an Indian restaurant in Bloomington called Shanti on Kirkwood that isn’t consistently great, but has one consistently great dish – lamb vindaloo. Try it the next time you are in town. You’ll find yourself making excuses to come back. One word of caution however – it is hot!
@Neesha…yes to fresh naan and dosa…it was a nice touch.
@BloomingtonWIBIAFan.. NYC sonds fun. I went in 2005, pre blog and can’t wait to go back. I am hitting Cape Cod at the end of the month and AZ in Aug, so a few places to travel.
I can do hot and the lamb sounds good. Thanks for your post and I got a kick out of your username!
