WIBIA Tour: Day 2 – San Francisco

Author: WIBIA | Filed under: Food Reviews, Location: San Francisco, CA, On The Road

Back again.  This segment was continued from my first day post.

Saturday morning brought us to the Ferry Building Farmers Market.  Good times and plenty of tasty treats.

I had a great time walking around and seeing the fresh produce and of course people watching.   Plus, my Aunt mistakenly put a cherry pit in a guy’s bag as she thought it was a bag for garbage.  I died laughing.

I am big bagel and lox fan, so when I saw this beauty for $14, I had to take it.

I really liked the idea here, but not the execution.  The bread was too thick and there was too much cream cheese.   However, I liked the red pepper and fennel combination.  I will replicate this at home.

Chris Cosentino’s place in the Ferry Building.   You might recognize him from the Next Iron Chef contestant and has a show called Chefs vs. City.  It was Farmer’s Market morning and I actually saw him there, which was kind of cool.  What was most cool though was that he had a shirt on that said “Fuck It.”

The Salumi Cup was on “Best Thing I Ever Ate – Salty” for SF-NY turncoat Tyler Florence.  $3.50 and you get six pieces of cured pork.   All were good in their own way, but I could not say they would be on my list for best salty thing I ever ate.   For $3.50, it was fun to have a snapshot of what they do, but I just wasn’t in love with it.

Would I Buy It Again?  Probably not, been there done that.

Still in the Ferry Building.  We tried a bite at:

Delica
http://www.delicasf.com/

They had a combo of Chinese Chicken Salad and a Shrimp Cake.  Everything was really fresh and crisp, but there was not a lot happening here.   I think that Delica is a great option for the local lunch crowd, but not a destination for tourists.  However, we did sit right by the sushi chefs and it was fun to watch them do their thing.

For dinner, we went to:

Baker and Banker
http://www.bakerandbanker.com/

I did not take any pictures, but check out the website.  We went for the five course chef’s tasting menu for $55.   Really cheap in SF.   I can’t remember each course, but the high notes were asparagus with lardo and a poached egg, red snapper with pasta in a coconut milk/curry sauce, a New York Strip and a chocolate cookie with a vanilla malt.   From front to back, it was a great meal.  I still can’t believe the price.  Regardless, it was a perfect meal and I would’ve paid $75 easy.

Would I Buy It Again?  Yes and every time I go to SF.

Sunday is Indian food, Berkeley and overhyped pizza.  Stay tuned.

  1. ohhh miss the Ferry bldg!! miss the Farmer’s mkt. miss SF….

  2. The lox looks oustanding. What kind of bread did they serve it on? I’m guessing a marble rye of some kind?

  3. @Adam – Sourdough. I liked the flavors, but the ratios were off. There was a ton of fennel on everything out there…I even think they put it on their Frosted Flakes.

  4. since u mention indian food, if you get a chance try Naan n Curry, it’s cabbie dive, but the best chicken biryani ever. actually, any of the cabbie places around the tenderloin are awesome. only problem is you will come out reeking if you eat-in, so take-out is a good option.

  6. awright, you all are older enough to know better. you all got a set amount on money to spend. try not to blow it on the first thing you see. that goes for food, rides, or shows. I mean it, really. and Im the one parking the damn car. I love fairs and festivals and farmers markets. in my home town of asheville nc, they have belle chere ( attracts about 350, 000 to a town of about 65,000. like a state fair. but the farmers market is open year round. and almost as good. and this from a guy that has picked up hay, raised cattle and hogs, and grows tomatoes . and been to commercial parks like.. well never mind.. sf is nice, but farmers markets, like flea markets are aplace to get good veg and fruit. cause they dont wanna take it back home. in fact, they caint. you cannot get things for nothing, and should not ask. an insult. but say, peaches. buck and a half a lb. you get to pick yours out. buy a 40lb box for 25 or 30. no picking. well, makes good jam or brandy and pies. and if a few are bad, so what. what I hate is going to a grocery store, paying a big price per lb, be it stawberries or fishsticks, cookies or potatoes, and having to throw half away. it only happens once. maybe twice. like loaf bread. or milk. stale or sour… well shit happens… maybe twice… but not a third time. how many times will you eat canned corn beef and find a nut 3/8 in it. well mistakes happen… bet you dont feed it to your kids though. and thats the point. someday, they will be saying , dont make me turn this car around, to their kids. try to teach them well. um… you dont wanna be eating that mayo based stuff after its been out 4 hours in the90 degree sun…

  8. sorrry, I got off track. in sf ilike dungeness( sp?) crab salad from street vendors. early. but not at 4 in the afternoon. I like oysters and sea scallops, fried. wouldnt eat them raw though I. like pork. it is forbidden in some religions. or alcohol. or beef. I can eat most anything, but some persons have real problems with different foods. but its a real thing, not made up. I like peanutbutter, or shellfish. but it will kill some unaware people, this very night. its called anypphylatic shock. like a bee sting. it hurts me, but to some it shuts everything down. be ever so careful. and i know I spelled that wrong. but its true. be careful, if not for you, for others. I worked in the printing bussiness and everyone wore latex gloves. we hired a guy who couldnot wear latex gloves. the more he was around it, the worse he got. its not made up. if you dont have any alergies ( just got back from the drs today, two pages of are you alergic to this- no , no– for two pages, count yourself lucky, like me. but its a real thing. excuse me now, while i make a peanut butter and bannana sandwich, with mayo, on wheat bread, with a glass of cow milk. pretty damn lucky.
