I was encouraged to try Tegry Bistro after hearing good things from my wife and friends. Tegry also has family ties to one of my favorite sushi places in town, I-Sushi.
The restaurant was lined with dark wood with a few large screen tvs. I would’ve thought that it was a steakhouse before. There is a sushi bar that you can sit at, but I prefer a table especially with my eleven month old.
What I Ate:
App:
Steamed Shrimp Dumpling, $4.99.
Three Rolls:
Medlen Roll: Yellowtail and Cilantro, $6.00.
Mexican Roll: Tempura shrimp, avocado, cucumber, cream cheese and spicy mayo, $6.95.
Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll: Fried tuna roll topped with spicy mayo and wasabi tobiko, $7.25.
The shrimp dumpling was mushy and contained very little identifiable shrimp. When I say very little, think a tic tac and a half. I didn’t like these at all.
The rolls arrived promptly after the shrimp dumplings. The first roll I tried was the Medlen Roll (top). Wow, it was totally not my thing. There was a ton of cilantro in the roll and it was the first time where I agree with people when they say that cilantro can taste soapy. The roll was not as cold as I expected it and almost felt like room temperature.
The Mexican roll (bottom) also proved to be underwhelming. It was mostly a balance issue with too much cream cheese and over all, it was just okay.
I liked the Crunchy Spicy Tuna Roll (middle). However, I didn’t care for the wasagi tobiko, nor did I think that the spicy mayo was spicy enough. I am being picky, but it was the best of the worst, yet still not a great roll.
Would I Buy It Again? It is worth another try. Sushi is difficult to review because there are literally thirty different rolls and I might have just picked three that I didn’t like. However, there were some execution problems here as the shrimp dumpling was just plain bad and I thought that the rolls were just okay. There is a lot to like here…a very comfortable interior, good service and a lengthy sushi menu. Next time that I am craving sushi, I will try Tegry Bistro again and I will cross my fingers that this was just an off day.

I love seafood but I hardly ever crave sushi.
What does pique my interest is the Schakolad Chocolate Factory next door … mmmm
Cilantro that takes soapy is most likely going off.
I had a horrible experiance with the Tegry Bistro as well. I was thrilled to see a sushi restaurant so close to my job (Dow Campus) but was quickly disappointed.
My friend and I waited at the hostess stand for almost 5 minutes before we were acknowledged. Once we finally sat down, it took at least another 5-6 minutes before anyone came by to get our drink orders or even give us menus. Let me just say that while we were there for lunch, there were only a handful of other customers. They did not seem busy or under-staffed in any way.
The sushi was less than stellar and the one thing that put me off almost immediately was something you also noticed. The sushi was room-temp. I’ve never had this problem with sushi before but it really made a difference in the taste and consistency. I had a hard time eating the rest.
I have not returned and will not in the future. Sushi is too easily ruined and taking into consideration the price, I would rather go to the Marsh next door.
I have had nothing but WONDERFUL experiences at Tegry Bistro on the NW side (I usually go once a month)…the staff has always been friendly and efficient…I have never had a complaint about the sushi….
I’m sorry that you had a less than stellar experience…I will continue going and continue enjoying the great sushi and friendly staff.
