On The Border
http://www.ontheborder.com/
I approached On The Border like I did watching the movie “Titanic.” You know how it is going to end, but there has to be more to the story, right? Not always the case.
OTB is a Brinker restaurant (Chili’s, Maggiano’s), although they are currently in the process of being sold to a private investor and that sale should close by the end of 2010. It is casual Mexican, family environment, right by a mall, you get the drift.
What I Ate: Lunch Burrito. $8.99 Filled with steak, cheese, pico de gallo and topped with queso.
I always call this gloopy-glop mexican. Cheese everywhere. The burrito was bland and the steak that filled it was flavorless as well. The queso had skin on top from being heated too long. Black beans and rice were pretty bad as well. Flavorless, straight out of a bag and box.
Would I Buy It Again? No, absolutely not, never ever again. Indy is a great city for Mexican food and this is about as bad as it gets.
However, I think that the On The Border Tortilla Chips in the grocery store are pretty good.

Did you take one for the team by doing this review? Sounds like it was a foregone conclusion…..
Oh shoot…what are the chances??? I’ve never been to On The Border but I was supposed to be going tonight!!! I won’t bail though…let’s see if I get lucky.
I love On the Border….you must have gone on a bad night. You may want to try it again.
IT is my favorite…and the Margs are to die for!
“No, absolutely not, never ever again.” I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more emphatic answer to the question “Would I Buy It Again?”. LOL
@Bloomy Kind of. It used to be better and I liked the chips and salsa, but the salsa almost has a sweet note to it now. Before, it was tolerable.
@Ryan If you loved me, you wouldn’t. Tell me what you think.
@Chandra I appreciate your enthusiasm, but no chance!!
@Adam: Ha ha…yeah, this is toward the tops on that list.
Looks like a step up from Tios, but still pretty bad.
Have you tried Abuelos in Carmel? Mmmmm! Delicious Mexican food!
I love the local mexican joints the most (el rodeo, la hacienda, etc.) but I always liked On the Border a lot more than Don Pablos for “really americanized” mexican. I got soft tacos with steak and onion strings at On the Border, and I think I creamed myself after eating them lol. The black beans were a good change, and the rice is ok.
And yea, that burrito looks like poo hahaha
@Jaye. Yes, but it has been a while. Not a big fan really. It is a step up though.
I remember when ChiChis was relatively exotic in Indy, but I’ve become especially picky – these days even la hacienda, el rodeo etc are nasty, mexican-by-numbers junk to me…
IMO Adobo Grill is tops in town (besides the more hole in the wall sorts of places)
@tom: I used to go to Chi Chi’s all the time right after I got out of college when I didn’t know anything about anything (you could argue that is still the case now) and I still miss their bottomless chips and salsa. The rest of the food was just blah and homogenized, but I could eat those chips and that salsa for hours.
Speaking of Chi Chi’s, I just did a Google search for them to see if there were any still in existence and look at this site that I came upon. LOL!
