Buffalo Wild Wings

Back in the day, I used to eat a ton of wings.  Then I ate 42 atomic wings in a competition with my best friend and spent the night in the ER with a hole burned in my stomach lining.  Now, I don’t eat them that much.  But I had a craving last week and since I haven’t been to a Buffalo Wild Wings since moving back to Indiana three years ago, I thought I’d give them a try.

What I Got:  Eight Boneless Wings and a Diet Pepsi.

I know, I know, why the diet with what is basically a calorie-bomb?  I happen to like Diet Pepsi and this was lunch so beer wasn’t an option.    I ordered four wings with Spicy Garlic sauce and four wings (nuggets really) with “Hot” sauce.  The server told me that they require an order of at least 12 wings to split the sauce.  WTF?  Furthermore, she told me that “Everyone complains about that.”  Good reason to ditch that policy.  The wings were good, well-cooked and the Spicy Garlic really is a great sauce.  A good amount of heat with a deeper level of flavor from the garlic, so very nice.  The accompanying ranch dressing was fine, sort of gloppy and not a ton of herbaceous flavor but okay.  I had to ask a couple of times for my celery but whatever.

Would I Buy It Again?  Not a chance in hell.  Here’s why: $12.00 with tip.  I was pissed and hungry when I left this place.  Buffalo Wild Wings has completely gone off the rails.  The prices are crazy, the menu is a mish-mash of crap that makes no sense whatsoever and once I walked in and smelled the familiar odor of stale beer and other “stuff,” I recalled why I haven’t been to one in three years.

Wings Etc. has a much better wing, good sauce, a truly great chicken breast sandwich and is far more reasonable.

  1. Aw come on, boneless wings?

  2. I agree about them being off the rails. My son and I went there for lunch over Spring Break and it was more than $20 for the two of us. We could eat much better food for a lower price at any number of local restaurants. We won’t be going back there anytime soon.

  3. Yeah man, I agree with you that BWW is a rip off.

I used to like going there during college football season bc I loved their multi-tv set up, but their food has seriously gone downhill in the last 4-5 years.

It’s way too expensive for what you get, and for a place that is named after the wings, you’d think they’d take a little bit more pride in the size/quality of them.

We haven’t gone to a BWW in over a year. There are far better sports bars in our area with a much better menu/food/prices and comparable game watching experience.

  4. Couldn’t agree more on the price statement… They are grossly over-priced. It’s only worth going on their discount wing nights!
But I can’t really go along with your statements regarding Wings Etc… I’ve had nothing but bad experiences at every location I’ve visited. Coagulated sauces, dry wings, etc… On one occasion, I wanted to order their asian sauce on my wings. For the uninitiated, they call theirs “Miso Spicy”… Feeling that this was racially insensitive, I ordered my wings with the “spicy asian sauce.” The server (who happened to be wearing a shirt advertising the “Miso Spicy” sauce) refused to let me order this way, forcing me to say the words “Me So Spicy.” Now I’m not asian so this doesn’t personally offend me… but using a play on words to poke fun at an asian stereotype isn’t really my style. For all those reasons, I suck it up and pay the prices and Buffalo Wild Wings. Getting it in bulk with fillers like potato wedges AND getting it to go usually helps keep the price down…

  6. I don’t understand how they stay in business. .50 for blue cheese AND they charge for celery and carrots!

  8. I’m not a fan of their boneless wings at all. The breading soaks up too much of the sauce and throws off the balance.

I agree that the prices are higher than one might expect, but wings are expensive everywhere these days. Even places like Rally’s sell wings for 50 cents each.

I go to the downtown location every once and a while primarily for the beer selection. The regular (not boneless) wings are fine, so I just chalk the high price up to the current state of the market.

  9. Can we hear more about the “42 atomic wing” ordeal that resulted in a hospital visit?

  10. You tip at BWW? I never do. Last time I ate there, the receipt did not even have a place to add one. Then again, I haven’t eaten there in years. Roosters FTW.

  11. Not a huge fan of BW3 and I’m not a fan of boneless wings either, unless they are at Wingin It at Michigan and 79th. Their boneless wings are basically chicken tenders. THEY ARE HUGE. They also run a special on Wednesdays. I think they are .40. Onion strings are good too

  13. LOL! Yeah I can do that in a post that is coming up featuring Wings Etc.

Not one of my finer moments.

Thanks for reading and thanks for commenting.

  15. I understand people being cautious about eating boneless wings. Often it’s just all breading. BW3 actually has a good version, I just don’t feel like taking out a loan to sample them.

    Thanks for reading and commenting

  17. I actually have only been to the Wings Etc. locations in Northern Indiana and they have always been great. Well I do hav a funny story about their use of plastic folks and bowls. I’ll tell that one too when I review.

Sorry you haven’t had good luck with Wings Etc.

    Thanks for reading.

  19. Yep, I like ‘em!

    Thanks for reading.

  20. I loooove BWW!! You HAVE to go on wing tuesdays, the wings are significantly cheaper then. My boyfriend and I go there at least once a month and always order at least 36 wings (and eat them all) with drinks for around 18 dollars! SUCH A RIP OFF if you don’t go on wing tuesday or boneless thursdays… I love spicy garlic, mango habanero, asian zing, and hot bbq! Although Las Vegas is lacking in the “local” wing scene…

  21. Boneless wings, diet anything, ulcer…..

Perhaps MCL with the old folks is a better place to review

  22. I think b-dubs is one of the only places we can get wings (never ever boneless) that are done right: deep fried, no breading, tossed in sauce, DONE. The skin is always crispy and they’re not dried out. My hubby makes the best wings at home and these are usually comparable. And the mango habanero is the bomb. They also have a dry spiced option thats a really tasty change. If someone knows a better option with this preparation let me know!

  23. I had NEVER been to BWW till about 2 weeks ago and I thought I’d give the a try.

One word. Awful. Thanks, but no thanks!

  24. Never been to one since I live in a rural area yet if I see one while on the road I will pass it up thanks to this review, sounds like a rip-off with an attitude no restaurant (or business) should have.

  25. I agree with this review. They used to be great in the 90′s, now…I their food is pretty bad and really expensive. In 1998, wings were .10c on special nights. Crazy.

Also, boneless wings scare me. But people, realize one thing BONELESS WINGS = CHICKEN NUGGETS.

  27. A BWW opened up near me around four years ago, and I yet to go there and try the place out. The same with Quaker Steak and Lube. Opened up almost two years ago and just haven’t been. All these wing joints overcharge for what you get. The best wings in my town come fro ma local sports bar, ubt even they have priced them through the roof. Of course when you go there(RJ’s), a whole wing counts as one, not half like most places do.

Personally, I like to make my own wings at home, and have several no fail methods. The thing is, even buying wings at the grocery store has become expensive. This country’s craving for wings have sent the prices “off the rails” as mentioned in the article. I hardly ever make them anymore.

  28. Quaker Steak and Lube is awesome ! ! ! Their wings are so much better and prices are better too. Much more selection and for HOT wings they have a waiver form you have to sign before trying their I think called “Atomic”
As far as BWW goes i have been eating there for all my life and before they became a nationwide chain. I have not eaten there for the past 7 months due to their outrages prices for things like “WINGS” They got rid of the Tuesday wings and I stopped going cause that was the only day I could stomach the prices for some wings. At some point they will realize we the people control the prices.
Thank You for your post guys and gals
