I am a big believer that this makes a huge difference. I got a pizza that is usually half/strips and cut into a pie shape and it just tasted different. Call me crazy. You tend to eat a big foldy NY style pizza differently than you would eat a small cut buffet pizza. Me, I tend to like the Albano’s cut as the pieces are just as wide as my mouth.

Here are some pics to explain, all based on a large pizza:
Standard Cut: 8 slices
NY Style Cut: 6 big foldy slices
Buffet Cut: 12 small slices
Party Cut: 16 Pieces, corners and squares
Albano’s Cut: 12 Slices, 1 on the equator, then strips.

Your poll left me with a huge questionmark in mind. Don’t you ever eat a pizza with forks and knives in the US? This is kind of common in Germany (depending on where you eat) and I do it at home as well, because I tend to eat slower then (and therefore healthier).
My Dad does the party cut and I busted his butt for years for doing it (I always did standard). Now, I’ve got to admit that party cut is a lot better. You are working with the same raw materials, but for some reason, cutting it in squares is just so much better.
The fact that the cut of a pizza influences us so much just shows how much of mental midgets that both you and I are. LOL.
@Matthew: I only eat pizza with a fork and knife if it is deep dish, too big to hold in your hand (stuffed pizza) or is a pizza that is falling apart in your hands. Even then, I get disappointed when I have to break out the utensils.
I’m cool with standard, party, or NY cut. The only time I really like the party cut is if the pizza is pretty thin, like Pizza King.
You know, for whatever reason, I like the party cut or Albano’s cut. Maybe it’s because I associate it with all the great old mom-and-pop pizza joints I’ve known over the years, such as Bob’s Tu Your Door, Andy’s, Rolyno’s, Art’s (Anderson, IN) or my hometown (Paris,IL) favorite, Joe’s Pizza. Of course, Pizza King is sliced that way, too.
I’m so spoiled that I live in Chicago and either eat stuffed pizza ( eaten with a fork and knife ) or opt for the other end of the spectrum and go with thin cracker crust sliced into cute little squares.
@Matthew – I always use a fork and knife to eat pizza bc when I was growing up my mother was really into teaching me “manners” and the habit stuck. Most people don’t use them though.
Interesting poll guys. A thick piece of Chicago deep dish or a giant triangle slice of thin crust NY pizza are my favorite cuts. I don’t care for any of the big time delivery chains, the only one that tastes even remotely good to me is Donato’s, but I know a lot people who hate their pizza.
There’s a dive sports bar by me that makes a superb chicken, bacon, ranch pizza. It’s fabulous, but that’s not what I think of when I think “real” pizza.
I don’t know how I prefer my pizza, but this post has made me really hungry!
I tend to go for the kind in the last picture but I haven’t had or seen one in years. The Albano’s reviewed looked VERY familiar, I must’ve gone there when we lived in Indianapolis. That really is the best way to cut a pizza, hands down. Especially with a crackery crust. I feel like it is available more in Indiana, I haven’t seen a pizza cut in strips since we left the state. Super hungry now.
Definite party or Albanos.
I’ll take my pizza cut in any way. Put it in a blender and I’d probably drink it. Well maybe not…
i donno, pizza is .. well it it is just good, and the worst I ever had was ok. it depends on how many and who you are serving. the frozen kind… eh. I rather have a pby, but real pizza, well, I would have to have a slice of the albinos, no matter how it was cut. cause it looks like it has every thing i like, and not more. peperoni, sausauge, and mushrooms on a thin crust with extra chesse. ok and maybe a few black olives. and sometimes we, our family , in nc) eat pizza with a knife and fork, but its really not pizza then, but home made, more like a pie with lots of cheader chesse, various veggies, chesse, ground beef (like in grade school cafateria) tomatoes, ugh… did i say chesse… in a thick crust… you must use a knife and fork. but very good. but those are some good looking pizzaas. somtimes for a quick and easy and low cal, we use flour tortias, precooked brown and serve turkey sausage links ( sliced) with sliced green peppers. and go easy on the chesse. each one( 8 to 10 inch ) is only about 350 calories. not bad, considering most slices, ( and who eats only one) are about 700 calories. gives me room for a beer, ( ow, ow, ok… glass of iced tea) Thanks for the pictures. Tom
I don’t think I can be friends with anyone who orders a party cut pizza. Yick.
@Matthew: Knife and fork only with Chicago style. I would eat the same amount, so not all that healthier for me!
@Indianapolis Eater: there is something to be said for delivery to the palate. Wine enthusiasts would consistently tell you that the same wine tastes different in different glasses.
@Ryan: Don’t tempt me. I might blend a slice and then post it.
I really don’t care, as long as it’s good pizza, but I had to vote for New York style, as NYC and the surrounding area is the pizza capital of the world. Hands down the best pizza on the planet comes from that section of the country and there is nothing anyone can say to convince me otherwise. Don’t get me wrong, I do enjoy other styles, such as the thin crust Chicago pizza, but nothing can beat New York style pizza.
I prefer the wheel sliced pizzas because I like to have a handle where I don’t get sauce all over my fingers.
Great debate! Palermo’s Pizza has taken the pizza-cutting question to America as part of a summer campaign called Decision 2K10: Square vs. Slice. People can vote on their favorite cut at http://www.SquareVsSlice.com, “meet the candidates” and chew over the campaign issues.
