What Is Your Favorite Dairy Queen Blizzard?

Girl Scouts Tagalong Blizzard

It’s especially fitting that we have a post on this since this year is the 25th anniversary of the introduction of the Blizzard to America.  The Blizzard, in my mind,  is one of the greatest ice cream innovations in history and I only say that half-jokingly.  Also, through Dairy Queen’s Facebook page, I come to find out that they are offering a promotion this week (at participating locations) in celebration of Blizzard Customer Appreciation week (April 19-25) where you can buy any size Blizzard and get a second one for a quarter.  What a deal!

Anyway, in celebration of that, the fact that I saw this post on the Dairy Queen blog and with summer (warmer weather) approaching, this week’s random topic is one of my favorite summer guilty pleasures:  ice cream.  And when I say ice cream, I more specifically mean my ultimate summer guilty pleasure and that is the Dairy Queen Blizzard.  My newfound love of Blizzards is funny to me because when I was, ahem…hungrier, I didn’t really like ice cream.  Now that I’ve lost a bunch of weight, I can’t get enough of it.  I’m not the only one either as the Blizzard even has a fan club too.

There are many different flavors out there and they flavors come and go with the seasons and special promotions (Girl Scout Cookie Blizzards, Pumpkin Pie Blizzards, etc.), but I’m wondering what everyone’s favorite Blizzard actually is.   Personally, my favorite Blizzard is the Girl Scout Cookie Tagalong Blizzard (picture above) that I have reviewed before, but that is only a limited time offering flavor.  My favorite regular flavor is the Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Blizzard although the Reese’s Pieces Blizzard is a very close second since they are essentially the same.

For the purposes of the poll and for the purposes of our discussion, we’re only going to go with the normal flavors that are available year round.

So, vote for your favorite flavor below and we’ll see which one wins out.  This poll is by no means scientific, but it is a fun way to waste time.  If you have a favorite seasonal flavor, another flavor that is not in the poll or just want to talk about this topic general, feel free to discuss it in the comments section.

  1. I love a good Blizzard, and now I want one. I’ve never had the German Chocolate, but it sounds like it could be a new favorite. I may venture out to DQ today and find out if they have that one.

  3. I think the only kind of blizzard I’ve ever had is an M&M one, because it seems to be the perfect one. I had a friend who worked there and he hated the M&M blizzards in particular because the M&M’s would catch in the machine and rip the cup out of his hands. That made me enjoy them more. Mmmm…underpaid teenage employee suffering…

  4. I worked at a DQ for about 1/10th of a summer, before waitressing proved to be more lucrative. The macaroon Blizzard, which was not on the menu, but was in the outdated employee “recipe” book, was always my favorite.

  5. You left off Hawaiian and Tropical!!! Those are my go to snacks.

  6. Honestly, I didn’t know that most of these existed. Georgia Mud Fudge Blizzard?!?

    Oreo or nothing.

@BigRed Nice reasoning for the M&M.

  8. My go-to blizzard would have to be chocolate chip cookie dough. Every once in a while I’ll get the Blizzard of the Month,” but most of the time I go with the dough. I’m more of a vanilla ice cream kind of guy so it meets requirement #1, and cookie dough has always been a favorite of mine so it’s a match made in heaven.

Banana Cream Pie is a regular at the location I frequent and I’d probably go with that as my No. 2, but I only get that once in a blue moon.

  9. Oreo is my go-to, but I do love the Butterfinger as well. Yummmm….might have to find a DQ at lunch!

  10. No Kit-Kat? By far the best.

  11. It’s strange…I don’t like Butterfinger candybars but I love them in a Blizzard. Butterfinger has my vote.

  12. German chocolate is the knock for sure. Vanilla soft serve mixed with chocolate syrup with pecans and coconut – how could that be a bad thing?

  13. The blizzard was invented in Bloomington, Indiana, not in St. Louis or by Dairy Queen.

  14. Judy is absolutely correct. I am sure many of us IU grads recall having a blizzard at the Penguin in Bloomington back in the late 70′s. So, unless someone has even better recollection, let’s give credit where credit is due.

  15. Heath Bar. Hands down.

  16. Tehy definitely took it from the Penguin in Bloomington…just down the road from my dorm. I had many blizzards. Remember when they would hand them to you upside down to show how thick they were? Dairy Queen even did that for a while. I sure hope the owners of the Penguin sued the pants off of them or are getting paid for every blizzard Dairy Queen sells.

  17. i was 16 and worked at the penguin in 1980 and i made the blizzards…we made them thick and turned them upside down in front of the customer at the window.

  18. my favorite is the french silk pie blizzard =) some of these ive never heard of

  19. Does anyone know what is in a “Tropical Blizzard”?

    : )- Slurp, Yum

    Thanks
