Breakfast Shootout: McDonald’s Egg McMuffin v. Burger King $1 Breakfast Muffin

I will hand it to Burger King, at they are trying. Their Double Cheeseburger is $1 and honestly, my favorite menu item regardless of price. Before I talk breakfast…Dear Burger King, YOUR FRIES SUCK! In fact, they suck big time and are by far the worst in the industry.
Burger King launched the $1 muffin breakfast sandwich to continue giving McDonald’s the proverbial Dollar Menu middle finger. I like their English muffin based sandwich. It is less greasy than biscuits, although the Crossain’wich is pretty bad.
The king of any quick serve breakfast sandwich is the Egg McMuffin. So I decided to stop by and eat one of each to see which one I like better. They are within a few blocks, so neither sandwich sat and got cold.
I am not going to spend a lot of time on the Egg McMuffin. If you read this blog, then surely you have had one?
The BK Muffin was not on the menu, soI had to ask for it. It is an English Muffin, sausage patty, folded egg and cheese. I liked that they didn’t skimp on the sandwich, as it was a full size breakfast sandwich.
Lets break it down:
Size: Winner – Burger King 4.8 oz. McDonald’s 4.6
English Muffin: McD, by far. BK doesn’t toast their English Muffin and a lukewarm muffin is bad news.
Egg: McDonald’s, by a lot. You really couldn’t taste the egg on the BK sandwich
Cheese: BK, there was more.
Meat: BK. I like the sausage patty better than the ham.
Nutrition: McD
Value: BK. $2.35 for an English Muffin in the capitol city (burbs at least)
Winner: McDonald’s. I know, BK is listed more, but the muffin is so bad, that I can’t recommend it over the Egg McMuffin. However, for $1, it is not bad at all.
BK, just toast the English muffin and you have a winner here, simple as that.

I’d like to hear more about why you hate BK’s fries so much! I think they’re pretty decent when they’re fresh.
I really think the difference in McDonalds’ and Burger King’s breakfast sandwich is the egg. The omelette style egg on the BK sandwiches lacks flavor. I know it’s probably against policy, but I would love if McDonalds left their egg just a liiiiiittle bit runny. As for the meat, I usually prefer to get the sausage variety at McDonalds instead of the Canadian bacon.
I agree with you on BK’s fries. I will say, however, that I knew someone who managed a McDonalds and he told me to never order their fries. Wouldn’t tell me why though.
@abomb: BK fries remind me of mashed potatoes that are formed to look like fries. They just taste fake to me.
@John, I like my eggs a little runny as well. Hmm..wonder why your friend won’t tell you why to leave the fries alone at McD.
I’ve never worked at a McDonalds, but I’ve seen photos of their equipment being repaired— once you see a grease drain, etc I’m sure it is all half ruined. I don’t think there’s anything particularly suspect about their fries vs anyone else’s.
Agreed on BK fries. IMO Hardees is tops right now.

I like their fries! In the end, isn’t all of this food fake – and by fake, I mean over processed mash-ups of GM-food?

I’m with you on the fries. Every time I get them, even when they’re hot out of the fryer, it seems like I always get the bottom of the bag what with all the tiny, hard shards. Burger King ketchup tastes funny to me too.
Why not go Sausage McMuffin vs. the BK sandwich, so you aren’t deciding the meat section based upon a sausage vs. ham comparison (which is the proverbial apples vs. oranges argument, right?)?
@Show… Correct..however, McD will still win based on the muffin and egg alone. The sausage patty at McD and Bk are comporable.
I like how in a comparison of breakfast sandwiches, an argument about french fries breaks out. This is a committed group. Meanwhile, everyone knows that Checkers/Rally’s has the best fast food french fries. I believe that has been accurately covered in a previous post.

By the way, I also agree with most everyone else that Burger King has the worst fries. I remember when they changed them (I was in high school and they used Mr. Potato Head in their ad campaign to spread word of the change)…they went from having the best to having the worst by far.
I just tried the BK Breakfast Muffin today (review pending at some point) and the omelet is tiny and very thin! You’re right; there’s no egg flavor. I think it might be half an egg.
You can see in your picture; the McDonald’s egg is at least twice the thickness if not more.
burger wars.. or breafast sandwich wars… none of these companies can sustain it for long.. I like bk chesseburgers, but also mikey ds. and I detest those stupid adds. and they are in the fight of their life. they are slugging it out. but… and am gonna iritate a lot of persons… but. mikeydees wins for breakfast, and bk has the best dollar chesseburger. just my oppinion, driving with the sun in my eyes… or behind you.. where you gonna stop.. all ads aside.. well… wendys maybe.. and I hate that. I have a an interest in wendys. its like bojangles vs kfc here. the only reason I go to bojangles is its closer. not because, but i dont care to drive 20 miles to kfc. side by side which would you choose.. well.. it varies. l ike airlines. but well.. the great hits of america ( macdonalads) for brerakfast. and burger king for a burger. but macdonalds lost me on the double cheesbruger when they only put one slice of cheese. and called it a mcdouble. no thanks. i will just go to bk.
here is a thought… they dont spend all their money on advertising, yet its a 45 min wait to get in the door. they must be doing somthing right. people vote with their feet.
I think BK fries to me are the best! McDonalds are soggy and floppy, gross.
Burger King fries have sucked for as long as I can remember. It’s a shame. I’d go to BK over McD’s any day. The burgers are a lot better. I loved the Angry Whopper. I hope they bring it back. I always opt for the onion rings. They aren’t too bad with the dipping sauce. I’ll give the muffin a try just on price alone, but it’s hard to beat the arches on breakfast, unless you’re Hardee’s
Frankly I ahve always prefered Mcd’s over BK in all areas. First of all, I agree that BK’s fries are lacking. But in my opinion McDonald’s french fires trump all.
Also, in my opinion, Burger King’s flame-broiled burgers just do not taste good. The McDonald’s burger is full of that great juicy flavor.
As far as teh breakfast muffins, the two are pretty similar, but I prefer the McMuffin simply because the egg is much more flavorful.
The BK muffin imitation sucks bad. Its not even close to Mcdonalds as much as I hate to pay for the sausage mcmuffin with egg at McDonalds. the crossoints arent bad at BK
I just tried the BK Breakfast Muffin Sandwich this morning. I am a huge fan of the Egg MC Muffin sandwiches and have to say BK fell FLAT on this one. The muffin did not look burnt but it was hard as a rock & filled with slimy liquid butter. I was so disgusted by this muffin sandwich that I will never try another one at BK.

Looks like BK has another Breakfast Fail.
In my opinion it is worth spending more than twice as much for the McDonald’s Sausage McMuffin with Egg.
Ok, where did I put my Tums?
I just had BK yesterday and McD’s today. The egg on the BK is very gross I had to throw it out after one bite, the egg on the McDs is definitely much better, their hash brown is also better always crispy vs soggy hash browns I got from BK. Not toasting the muffin is a huge disadvantage, nobody likes untoasted muffins. McD will always win on Breakfast versus BK. They have a chicken breakfast sandwich which in my opinion is the best, that with grape jam is #1. The only good thing about BK is the croissant with sausage and cheese only and they have more options, now with the BK breakfast bowl and french toast sticks plus mini cinnamon rolls and the best cheesy tots, but these are only sides, when it comes to the actual sandwich McD Wins every time
as far as fries BK fries gives an after taste of dirty grease after you eat them, if McD fries are fresh they cant be beat. But as far as Burger quality Burger King wears the crown vs. McDs limpy lifeless burgers.
BTW I threw away the egg from my BK sand. in the garbage at my office and it looked like a post it on the bottom of the garbage can lol.
Why can’t BK toast the muffin or McDonalds offer a scrambled egg? I also wonder where the extra weight is in the BK sandwich as its obvious MCD has alot more egg! and about the same of the rest.
I’ll have the bk ciabatta club sandwich and bk ciabatta club sandwich with sausage
