Revisit: Pizzology

Author: WIBIA | Filed under: Food Reviews, Location: Carmel, IN

Pizzology continues to be the next big thing and based on this visit, it may stay that way for a while.  My first visit was on opening night and I loved it.  Take away the honeymoon period and would I still feel the same way?

What I Ate:

Daily Risotto – $8. Broccoli Rabe with Wild Mushroom.

I am sure that I can find a more articulate way to say it (maybe not), but when my wife asked me how it was, my response – “the bomb.”  It was cooked perfectly and seasoned just right.  I thought the portion was pretty generous, we quartered it and you can see my portion.  Question, what stock was used for the risotto because it was a lot darker than the majority of risottos that I have had?

On to the pizza.  IMO, four people = two pizzas here with usually a few slices to take home.  $13 each.

Pizza Bianca:

Lombardy: Prosciutto, Arugula, Smoked Mozzarella, Parmesan Reggiano

I really enjoyed both of these pizzas.   The Lombardy matched a salty prosciutto with the peppery arugula and the smoky cheese and that is a perfect triple play of deep flavors.  It was really good and I thought there were a generous amount of toppings considering the price.

Old Kentucky Rome: Kentucky Cured Prosciutto, Roasted Figs, Taleggio

I have tried four pizzas at Pizzology and the Old Kentucky Rome is now my favorite.  Really, really good.  I am still craving it.  I really dislike figs, but they just worked here.  This is where you need to have a little faith, go with it – and later be glad that you did.

If you are considering a white pizza, lets be clear, it is not alfredo sauce.  Think more of an oil that is recycled from pan drippings from the toppings.  Also, I would recommend that you try one of each,  one red sauce and one white sauce.  Though they are both good separately, I would never order this combo (2 white) again as they were too close in flavors.  Their pastas are hard to pass up as well.

Would I Buy It Again?  Yes. It is cliche to say – believe the hype, but I almost want to say it.  I also don’t want to say that it is the best pizza in the city (because I have yet to try all of them), but I can’t think of any pizza place that I enjoy more.

  1. Good write up. I’ve been to Pizzology a handful of times now (different days of the week and with a few people or a large group) and the quality and attention to detail is so impressive. And, you can’t beat the prices. (I mean, 7 bucks for a 1/2 order of pasta which can feed a few people!) The mussels are incredible- as well as their breadsticks, pastas and of course, pizza. I’m looking forward to patio season at Pizzology.

  2. The other great quality of Pizzology is that they have 4-5 beers on tap, all of which have been brewed within 100 miles of the restaurant (with the exception of maybe Three Floyd’s – which is still within the state).

It wasn’t long ago that there was no local beer available at restaurants. It’s great to be able to eat locally, but also drink locally. Sun King is the real deal.

  3. I get Old Kentucky Rome cravings at least three times a week. It’s to the point where I have to order it when I’m there, just for me, just so I can eat leftovers for lunch/midnight snacks for a few days, while whoever I’m dining with risks loss of limb for going anywhere near it.

I agree with Indianapolis Amy: The pizzas never wobble in quality, no matter how busy they are or how many people you have in your group. Patio season can’t come fast enough.

  4. Additionally, I just broke out some slices that had been frozen for a month, and they still tasted fantastic when defrosted in the microwave and then re-heated in the oven. This pizza reminds me of the old-school brick-oven places like Pepe’s, Sally’s and The Spot in New Haven, CT, the epicenter of the pizza universe.

  5. Man, I’ve been craving this place ever since I started following them on Twitter. Good stuff.

  6. i’m thinking maybe that was mushroom stock in the risotto?

  7. Really, really, really good! The pizza is fresh and delicious, they are constantly inventing new types of mouth watering risotto, the pasta with pork should is so good! I’m hoping their service can catch up with the quality of their food. Service is pretty slow and could be a bit more professional.
