The Jet’s Pizza sign was up a few months in advance of them opening their doors. I didn’t know a lot about Jet’s, but my boss (a Detroit transplant) loves pizza and more specifically, really loves Jet’s Pizza. They have been open for about a month, so I decided to stop by.
What I Got: Jet’s has coupons online, so I ordered a Large Jet’s Pack. Two topping large pizza, a large order Jet’s Bread and a large salad for $23.99. Ordering was a little rough and as I mentioned what I wanted on the pizza, this happened:
Clerk: What else can I get you?
Me: Ummm…I think that it come with a salad as well, so can I get an large antipasto salad?
Clerk: Sure.
Me: And some dressing sounds good with that…
Clerk: Oh yeah…we have…(listing dressings out)
Me: Okay, Italian.
Clerk: Is that it?
Me: Well…(confused)…do I get a choice of sauces for the Jet’s bread?
You get the point. Then I was placed on hold for a minute while he figured out how to put the coupon in the system. Not the smoothest transaction, but any good pizza shop knows that one of the most important parts of the transaction is ordering the pizza. It needs to be really easy. Everything at the point of sale went well, so I was less discouraged about the ordering problems on the phone.
As far as the pizza…I liked it, but was slightly disappointed. Two of my friends said it was the best chain pizza around and I am not sure if I can say the same.
I know that I am going to get flamed for this, but it reminded me of the buttery crust from Pizza Hut. The pizza was a little light on the sauce and a little heavy handed on the cheese and I prefer it the other way around. But again, my preference. Toppings were average to slightly above average in quality, although the sausage was cooked a few minutes too long. Since it is a deep dish style of pizza, I found it to be pretty filling after two slices.
The Jet’s Bread was saturated in butter and oil and I thought that it was pretty heavy and didn’t compliment the pizza well. However, when I warmed it up as leftovers, it tasted a lot better than I remembered. The pizza dipping sauce was pretty bland and I would go with the cheese the next time. If you are into Mad Mushroom cheese sticks, then I think that you would like these as well.
The Antipasto Salad was a miss as well. Small layer of toppings and a ton of lettuce. I ordered the Italian dressing and I didn’t like it at all. You could not see any spices in the dressing, it was a uniform color and reminded me of a thin paint.
Would I Buy I Again? Hmmm…maybe. I really push myself to give a “yes” or “no” on every review, but the jury is still out on this one. I heard raving reviews from two of well respected friends, so I am going to assume that this was an off night.
I think that Jet’s has enormous potential and I would choose it over a good amount of chain pizzas. I would give the pizza a 7/10. I was told that I need to try the “8 slice”, but I am not sure how that is different from the pan style that I ordered.
Jet’s has a myriad of pizza crust options that piqued my interest and I am going to “Turbo Crust” next time. They have the traditional round style pizzas as well. For the amount of food that we got for $24, I was pleased. Stay tuned, I need a second visit to have an opinion that you can set your watch to.

Sorry to see you had an “off” experience with them. They are really close to our house and we’ve gotten from them several times – and they are delicious!
I get the tomato and feta with turbo and it is easily my fave pizza outside of Some Guys on Allisonville.
That pic’ of the salad must be misleading – It appears as tho’ there are a lot of toppings on that – olives and lunchmeat at least – how many was it meant to feed I wonder.
Sorry it was a sort of miss. It doesn’t really look all that appealing
@andi – I have heard nothing but good things, so I have a feeling that something was a little off here. I woudl try a diff. salad and your pizza combo sounds good.
@skippy – The pic is a little misleading, I agree. It is a deep bowl and that layer of toppings is pretty thin. Once you serve it, you get a little bot of each topping and that is it.
Not sure what the serving size was, but 4 people were there and I had salad and breadstick leftover for 2 lunches. If you had more than 4, there wouldn’t be enough pizza, so this is a good 4 person meal with lunch leftovers the next day.
Being a new place, I wonder if the ordering issue was someone not completely trained just yet?
Hell, that could be part of the inconsistency with how they prepare the food as well, being a chain that recently opened locally.
I can tell you probably agree, which is why you might try it again.
Jet’s is typically pretty solid. I had a buddy who worked there for a while, who told me that a cup of oil goes into the pan for a large pizza. A little nasty, but it produces a good pizza. I would give it another shot, and try the chicken parm pizza. It is absolutely delicious.
One of my pet peeves is food that when its presented looks nothing like the ad, etc. I really think a scum lawyer could bring a huge class action suit particularly against the fast food joints. Anyway in this case that salad you were served was lazily put together compared to the picture of the same salad on Jets website, the salad on the site has the salami, olives. etc. mixed (tossed) into the salad nicely whereas the one you received just had the goodies thrown on the top! I wonder which way the salad is normally served?
cool, around here you ask three persons what they want, you get five answers. my personel fav orite, often over ruled, but still good, peperonio, sausage, mushrooms and double chesse, and black olives on a thin crust, please. ( aside – what i hear— stuff is gona kill you one of these days . thats ok, then I can discuss with the guy who first put pineapple or barbeque chicken on a pizza) I like pizza hut also, but my favorite is , well, poppa john or little ceasar is nice, but I like dominoes best. now I am in deep stuff…like when we went to the buffet at pizza inn, and I said ” we could have got this at home; all we lack are paper plates. not a wise thing to say… pizza is … well have learned to keep my mouth shut. ( peperoni, ground beef, mushrooms, double chesse)… tom
my apoligies to John, about the chicken thing. hope I did not offend; there is a very good place in candler nc and they deliver to most area motels and some homes if not too far away. (is a rural area) they are great, far superior to the chains. but be prepared to wait. they dont pre cook anything but the red sauce, I think. worth the wait though. no sit down, just take away… or order to go… tell em what you want, they make it. ( even pineapple or barbeque chicken) to my knowledge, they dont deliver drinks. of any kind. tom

The “Jet’s Bread” looks exactly like “Toppers’ Stix” from Toppers (http://www.toppers.com). These were apparently “invented” by Toppers back in 1993. Many people on campus here swear by them, and most end their night of drinking with a triple order. I think they are greasy and don’t make a very good nightcap after a night of beer. Maybe that’s just me.
I see Toppers has spread to IN now.
I just don’t get Jet’s appeal. We got one up here two or three years ago and everyone seems to think it’s the best pizza around. Their pizza is incredibly heavy greasy and heavy. You definitely feel it in your stomach for hours. Plus, they never use enough sauce! I’ve tried their thin crust and it was sort of like Saltines and ketchup. Still, they must be doing something right if they’re able to expand these days.
Here’s a little bit about Jet’s Pizza and that style of pie….
It’s loosely called Detroit style pizza
Here’s the Wikipedia link to it…
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit-style_pizza
Also, the pizza your friend suggested is called their
“8 corner” pizza…each piece is corner piece, since thats the crunchiest and most desired piece. Its pretty good. I do miss Jet’s. I gre up in Michigan and now live in Louisville, and we dont have it down here. But we have White Castle. And Sonic. Im survivng, but just barely…:)
Craig
@Craig. Thanks for the link, I really appreciate it. Ya know, this all makes sense now. I remember seeing a picture of Buddy’s on Epic Portions and then I saw it on wiki. I have these mental list of places that I have to visit when I go to that city and Buddy’s is on my Detroit list. Coney’s and pizza hmmmm….
I have to agree that ordering with coupon can be trying. Overall I love Jetts and my coworkers as well!!!!!!!
my friend says jet’s is the best pizza she’s ever had, it is her very fav. whenever she goes to MI she gets one plus more for other days after she gets home. I personally have never tried it but i might give it a try someday!
