Bacon Thickburger: Hardee's or McDonald's?

Author: WIBIA | Filed under: Food Reviews

People always like the comparison posts, so let’s go at it again.   I love a great juicy thickburger and am not a fan of flimsy burgers!  Hardee’s started the Thickburger craze and McDonald’s entered the market about eight years later!  So let’s take a look at them:

Hardee’s

McDonald’s

As you can see, I’m not sure if this is a close comparison with Hardee’s having lettuce and tomato.   However, they both have bacon on them, so…

What I liked:

Hardee’s:  I liked the extra produce here.  Hardee’s beef tasted better and I also liked their bacon better.

McDonald’s:  Good fast food pickles, more bacon than the Hardee’s sandwich, although it was a little crunchy for my taste.

Winner:  Hardee’s…by a narrow margin.   The reason I liked Hardee’s is the addition of lettuce and tomato.  It is like adding a burger to a BLT.  If you want a stronger bacon taste, head to McDonald’s.  I imagine that you can get my favorite McDonald’s burger:  Angus Deluxe with bacon and that would be a shootout.

Honestly, there are better burgers at both places.  I would love McDonald’s to add barbecue sauce to their bacon burger.  Basically, I wasn’t crazy impressed with either of them.  So, what is your favorite fast food bacon burger?

  1. Like the comparison post! Haven’t tried either burger. Hardee’s looks better.

My go to is Steak n Shake’s single or 96th Street.

  2. Nice review! For favorite fast food bacon burger, I might have to give the nod to Wendy’s. I just like the fresh taste of their ingredients.

I’m almost positive that McD’s has a Western-style Angus burger coming. I too would like some BBQ sauce.

  3. I’ll go with the McDonald’s Double Cheeseburger/McDouble (they are essentially the same in my mind) as my favorite fast food burger with the Wendy’s Jr. Cheeseburger Deluxe in a close second. I’m not a fan of much of anything else at McDonald’s but that burger combination that they have is awesome.

  4. I am intrigued that the McD’s bacon was too crispy for you – how do you like your bacon? I hate it when it isn’t thoroughly cooked [flimsy?] but do you think the accidently overcooked this particular bacon?

My favorite burger is still Roy Rogers bacon cheeseburger with fixins bar. :D Too bad they are so hard to find. :(

  5. He asked what your favorite fast food bacon burger was …

  6. I’d go with the Frisco from Hardees if I can, because it does have bacon on it.

Straight bacon burgers, though, I’ll take the Baconator from Wendys.

I also really like those Burger King stacks … you remember the old commercials with Mickey from Seinfeld where they stack only “MEAT and CHEESE.”

  7. I’m apparently illiterate. My favorite fast food bacon burger is the Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger at Wendy’s.

  8. My favorite fast food bacon burger is the flamethrower burger from Dairy Queen. Otherwise (if the latter is ineligible), it would have to be the baconator from Wendy’s.

  9. Ah yes, I should have remembered that one, especially since I did a review on it and said it was an awesome burger. I guess my brain isn’t working that well today.

  10. My favorite (fast food) burger comes from Sonic. It’s totally underestimated. People think of slushes when or if they think of Sonic, but their burgers are really great. Fortunately, I live in Austin, TX and we have a ridiculous plethora of amazing burger joints including Hilberts, BurgerTex, The Tavern, and P. Terry’s. YUM!

  11. Oh, and I’m also illiterate and didn’t answer the question properly. But really, take any of the awesome burgers I mentioned, slap bacon on it, and it’s an awesome bacon burger. Hilberts in Austin, especially. Great thick cut bacon.

  12. From the pictures, I think I’d go for the Thickburger. The bacon in both look almost completely identical… Wendy’s has their new thicker bacon which is pretty nice. I actually like their Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger, it’s only 99 cents and satisfies my hunger without leaving me feeling stuffed.

  13. Haha… I just realized the Junior Bacon Cheeseburger at Wendy’s is just a smaller version of the Hardee’s Thickburger except without the onions…

  14. McDonalds just does everything so, so wrong. Every burger they make has that nasty half-water-patty taste to it. All of their food has that nasty, addictive McDonald’s drug in it, and it never tastes right, authentic or … natural! It pretty much always tastes like boiled crap, which is why if I am forced to eat at McDonalds, I will only consume the regular cheesburger. Not the one with two of those flimsy water patties, but the actual cheesburger – one patty, one slice of cheese. Anything else in McDonalds is highly questionable as food.

Hardee’s, on the other hand, always has real tasting food, which, these days, says a lot for a fast food chain.

However, I can’t / don’t / won’t eat pigs (gross), so I dunno about bacon burgers. But I’m willing to bet all my money in the bank that Wendy’s has that on LOCK. I’ve seen bacon burgers from Wendy’s that made me think twice. Haha.

  15. Ryan, just to say… I have a nephew that works full time as a hvac guy in eastern nc for wendys, along I 40, he told me that what they say is true… every thing is fresh… really fresh, even the chille is made from ground beef that did not sell, and is not reheated or stored overnight. thats forbiden, or they will pull your franchise… really clean and fresh. nothing frozen… but I still think, and buy, the bk whopper with chesse, not because of their ads, but in spite of them. ( the bk “king” creeps me out). it just tastes better. just a plain old whopper with chesse, ltm, no onions, thanks. but were I worried about cleanliness … and I love their baked potatoes with a cup of chille… but would still rather have…
