Guacamole Double Steakburger

Recently, Steak ‘n Shake started offering guacamole as a topping to several of their menu items (burgers, hot dogs) and as a guacamole lover, I decided to give theirs a shot to see how it held up.

What I Got:  Guacamole Double Steakburger combo $3.99 with coupon; $4.99 regular price (comes with fries)

If you’ve never had Steak ‘n Shake before, you are probably unfamiliar with the way they cook their burgers.  They cook their burger patties on a flat-top grill and press the patties to be very thin and since it is on a flat top grill, the patties cook in their own juices.  This burger had two of them.  Other toppings on this burger included the aforementioned guacamole, pepper jack cheese, tomato, red onions and lettuce.

The pepper jack cheese was a nice little addition to the burger.  I’ve always been a cheddar cheese guy on my burgers, but I’ve recently had a couple of burgers with pepper jack cheese on them and I may be quickly converting to that being my cheese of choice.  The rest of the toppings were crunchy and fresh, so that was a nice thing as well.  But, let’s not kid ourselves here though, the cheese choice was not the reason I bought the burger…the guacomole was the main attraction.

And for being a main attraction, it was a major let down.  You could obviously taste the avocados and could taste that they actually did make this guacamole fresh at the restaurant, but it really lacked tang that you usually get from good guacamole.  Their brand of it could have used more salt and more lemon juice in order to turn up the tang because this was just boring.

Would I Buy It Again?  No, I wouldn’t.  This was disappointing, but I guess I should have expected this from a place that primarily serves burgers and milk shakes and doesn’t really dabble in “exotic” foods like guacamole.  The only time to really consider this burger is if you have a desperate craving for guacamole and you happen to have Steak ‘n Shake as your only food option.  If you have other options, definitely choose those first.

  1. It seems like everyone is trying too much crossover anymore. Some mix is good (A1 sauce on burgers), but having Steak N’ Shake serve guac on a burger is crossing the line. Stick with what works.

  2. Guac at Steak n’ Shake? That just seems wrong:)

Guac belongs on a chip or a taco. :)

  3. Couldn’t agree more. It seems like the worst offenders are places like Arby’s with their “gyros”, their roast”burgers”, etc. or Wendy’s with their chicken wings. Just stick to what you know and if that’s not good enough, well then you probably shouldn’t be in business anyway.

Humorously enough, Arby’s and Wendy’s are owned by the same conglomerate. Looks like they are all using the same battle plan.

  4. It’s pretty good to eat with just a spoon too. :)

  5. I agree…WAY too much crossover in the food business these days!

  6. Guacamole on a burger? Eeeeewwwwww. I’m glad you took one for the team on this one. I don’t think I’d have been able to stomach it…

  7. I don’t see anything wrong w/ giving it a shot and trying something new. You might bring people back to the restaurant or get new people to come in. The only problem I would see is sticking w/ a bad idea. And, didn’t you say indianapoliseater, that Indianapolis is a test market?

Also, if restaurants didn’t do this, you guys would lose a lot to talk about.

Huh? Fresh guacamole is all about tasting the avocados! The “tang that you get in good guacamole” is from lemon juice added purely to keep the green from turning an unappetizing brown color after about 45 minutes. If you taste lemon, you are usually eating old guacamole!!

  9. Yes, lemon juice is added to keep guacamole green but some people also add it for flavor (like me). So, we are both right.

  10. I add lime.

  12. Maybe it’s from living in Texas, but I enjoy and encourage guacamole on anything and everything. Burgers, sandwiches, and of course Mexican food. One of my favorite ways to eat it is just ripping off chunks of french bread and dipping. Mmm…

  13. Visited Steak ‘n Shake this morning for our regular “end of the work week” breakfast with my homies from work. My friend had the guacamole burger, and he loved it. I went for the spicy chipotle burger. It was a big letdown for me :( I was really looking forward to it, and it just fell flat. The chipotle mayo-ish sauce on the burger wasn’t spicy at all, and wasn’t very flavorful. I didn’t really think the diced raw green peppers worked, either. Pretty boring sandwich. Luckily, my cookies ‘n cream shake was delicious!

  14. Cookies ‘n Cream shake for breakfast?! LOL, good effort!

  15. I am just weird I guess. ;) I LOVE SnS’s Guacamole burger and Arby’s Bacon Cheddar Roastburger! =d (as well as Wendy’s Smokehouse BBQ Chicken Wrap LOL).

  16. They make guacmole every day.
Basically, the recipe is bad, or the person didn’t know what they were doing.
