Is Eating Only Pizza a New Diet Craze?

A couple weeks ago, we posted a story of a guy that ate nothing but pizza for thirty days on a bet from a friend and ended up losing six pounds in the process.  As I was looking back at that post on SeriousEats.com, I found in the comments section that someone else had posted another story related to the “pizza diet.”

Well, it turns out that a guy in the Tampa Bay area has done something similar with even more dramatic results as he’s lost thirty pounds in thirty days.  Impressive to say the least.  Now, if you read the article and then the comments below the article, you can see that he did introduce another variable (exercise) into the diet so that probably skewed the results some.  When you go from a sedentary lifestyle to a semi-active lifestyle, you are going to get results no matter what.  So, it’s possible that this guy’s pizza diet weight loss was totally bogus because of this new lifestyle variable.

Regardless,  of how you feel about his introduction of exercise and how it skewed the results, it is an interesting read.  Especially since he is harboring thoughts of traveling the country to praise his new “diet.”

Now, if we could just get one of our WIBIA commenters named Diana Cheung to follow through on her statement that she’d eat carrot or cheesecake for entire month (check out the comments section of our post), then we might have our own hat to throw into this out of the ordinary diet fad that seems to be springing up out there.  C’mon Diana, you need to do it!

  1. I may just have to try this “diet” out!

  2. i love deviled eggs. you know, hard boil some eggs, and mix the yolk with real butter, mayo, sweet and hot pickle relish, dust with paprika… muum good… but I only get those twice a year… at family reunion and christmas…. but if thats all I had, 24/7, well, after about day 2, I d lose weight also. feeding myself would be a task, not a pleasure. just stoking the fire. and I dont mean in relationships, with your spouse. just food. personally, my favorite ff burger is a whopper with chesse. but I would not want it every meal. hell, I could lose weight on crab leggs , butter and fresh tomatoes with blue chese dressing. maybe not the first week. smile. but pretty soon. i weigh in 245. ok with that. got as high as 305. but if i ate the same thing, subway, pizza, pbj, porterhouse or lobster, for every meal, I’d lose weight. that is why diets work. the cabage soup diet… the rice diet… the egg diet… the well, it could be anything, after day 3 you ve seen it enough, and just don’t want it no more. hence the weight ( fat)comes off. but it is muscle also. so walk. thats why babies leave momma… need somthing different…

  3. I believe that a person can lose weight just by eating pizza and working out. However, I call 30 pounds in 30 days complete BS.

  4. I don’t think the thirty pounds in thirty days thing is all that much BS. I lost forty pounts in two months just by introducing exercise and I was still drinking beer, eating fatty foods, etc. If you go from doing nothing to working out really hard, then you can get results like that (assuming you have the pre-existing fat/weight to burn). It’s not normal by any means, but it is possible.

  5. This guy did it in a pound a day. All the “experts” say, and I loosely say expert, indicate that healthy weightloss is approximately a pound a week. I just think this guy was also taking pills or maybe it is possible to turn yourself into Michael Phelps over night.

Keep in mind, I haven’t read anything other than this.

  6. Zachary Jacob Zblewski says:
  7. I was watching The Biggest Loser last week and one guy lost 16 lbs in one week. So it’s entirely possible, assuming one has been a couch potato and then decides to change his or her lifestyle.

  8. he also spent the month in a tanning bed.

  9. This is simple biochemistry and physiology:

Eat anything you want, provided you eat fewer calories than your resting metabolic rate + exercise demands require and you WILL lose weight.

He probably didn’t gorge down 3 whole pizza pies a day.

The only thing is, with such a high fat and carbohydrate diet, he can lose fat, but he won’t be getting any six pack muscles any time soon.
