Brunchies serves breakfast and lunch and I have yet to hear anything great about it.  I have also never heard that it was bad, which is odd because it has been open for a few years.

Normal Sunday morning church crowd.  About a 15 minute wait at 10:30.  Service was a little slow to greet the table, but overall friendly.  The menu is the same as any other breakfast joint.  I was hoping to find something that caught my eye more than French Toast, Pancakes, 2 eggs and 1 meat, etc.  Nope.  Standard breakfast fare at standard breakfast prices.

I decided on the biscuits and gravy.  Around $5.  Two biscuits halved and served with hash browns.   The portion was a good size with just enough gravy.  IMO, you should be able to see the biscuit on biscuit and gravy.

As far as the taste, eh.  Hate to use the same adjective, but very standard.  I didn’t get the feeling that any part of this was homemade.  If it was, stop wasting your time and buy the sausage gravy.  The gravy could’ve used a little more salt, but not sure if that would be enough.  Hash browns were pretty plain as well, however there was a generous portion.

Would I Buy It Again:  No. Average to sub par meal and plastic plates cheapened the experience.  There’s no reason to choose Brunchies over local competition.  It wasn’t horrible, but it just wasn’t good enough.

  1. Not a bad price, but I am not a sausage gravy kind of gal.

If it is pedestrian [which is a good word in lieu of standard ;) ] I would choose to go to a local diner for a buck or two more.

And besides? Brunchies has to be the stupidest name I have ever heard for a restaurant. Seriously? I would’ve avoided on that alone. Hee.

  2. Brunchies IS a local diner, and that’s why we go there periodically. It’s simple food, as you said, but I like that, every time I go in there, I’m greeted by the same 2-3 people, because the family that runs the place is always there. In Carmel, there’s a very short list of these small, family-run places.

  3. I like the family owned part and it was a cool place. I just wish the food was better/different than everywhere else. It wasn’t bad, but with little effort, it could be so much better!

  4. I am a fan of Brunchies, I think they do a nice job overall and they are friendly and attentive. They are certainly not a gourmet place but for what they are – classic food, nicely prepared, good service — they do that well.
I think you should have tried one of their specialties which is the crunchy french toast….it is french toast dipped in corn flake crumbs — really different and very tasty.
And they do have some other specialties on the menu…perhaps you should give it another try and ask them for their suggestions.

  5. I’ve never been to Brunchies…I used to go there when it was Hambones.

Isn’t there a Brunchies in Broad Ripple?– or there used to be?

  6. The absolute best biscuits and gravy in my neck of the woods is at a place called Diggers. WIBIA, if you should ever find yourself in my town (Crawfordsville), I’d recommend giving it a shot. Good stuff.

  7. This place gets a thumbs down on the basis of name alone.

Unless, of course, they have a breaded tenderloin!

  8. It’d have to be a dynamite breaded tenderloin, though right? lol

  10. FYI….The people who own Brunchies, owned the TIN STAR in Broadripple, known for their tenderloins, try it, you’ll like it!!
Brunchies is a great family owned restaurant. This is the one and only, there is no Brunchies in Broadripple, thats Bisquits, dont confuse the two.
Think out of the box, and Try BRUNCHIES!!!!

    Really!! Look at your name!!!
    Brunchies rocks!! Try it!

  13. The Tin Star is closed and their tenderloins tasted like those old frozen fritters that my mom used to serve us when we were kids. I was not impressed at all.

  15. I thought this place was just o.k. They have just OK food and the wait staff just seems rushed and inattentive. I have known about the tenderloins from the Tin Star days and they are just ok, nothing special. They used to have a great waitress in this place and I don’t remember her name but she was excellent and on top of things and she left there and things just don’t seem the same here without her smiling face, but if you are in the area and just want standard breakfast food then you might try it, the lunches however are not so great!

  16. We had breakfast there this morning. No wait at 11:00 on Saturday, but there was a snowstorm. I had a “skillet” with diced link sausage, bacon and green peppers, served over hash browns, topped by 3 eggs. It was well-prepared, not very interesting. My daughter had an omelet with spinach and mushrooms, topped with Hollandaise and black olives. She liked it, but the olives seemed like a weird addition. The service was quick and attentive, and the coffee was fresh. I would go back, and would try for something a little spicier.
