Gray Brothers Cafeteria
555 S. Indiana St.
Mooresville, IN 46158

Out of 28 reviews on Google, this place has 4.5 stars out of 5.  80% of the people like it on Urban Spoon.  People travel here form across Indiana for their old school cafeteria favorites, fried chicken, swiss steak, meatloaf, etc.  I am usually not the cafeteria type of guy, but I was impressed by MCL, so let’s see how this goes.

On average, lunch and drink will run you close to $10.00.  Every time I am at a cafeteria, I get the same thing, fried chicken, corn and mac and cheese.  Sub mashed potatoes for corn if I am feeling skinny that day!  Ha.

White meat fried chicken was good, but nothing to rave about.  Better than Chester Fried from the gas station, but it is not as good as KFC on a good day.  However, it was an honest portion and cooked well, very juicy, but lacking seasoning.   Corn is corn, nothing more to report there.

Mac and Cheese was another disappointment.  Average at best and I think that I would prefer the Mac from KFC as well.  It basically tasted like elbow noodles and shredded cheddar cheese.  A good Mac is creamy, but this was not a good one as it was a touch dry.

Would I Buy It Again?  No. I left thinking, what the hell was that?! It wasn’t horrible, but it reminded me of a place that was holding on to the glory days of the past.   Once you step away from the fact that your grandparents used to take you there after church, you will probably stop reminiscing and realize that there is better out there.

  1. Disclaimer: I’ve never been there, so I haven’t had their macaroni and cheese.

However, the macaroni and cheese from Kentucky Fried Chicken is terrible! It’s basically yellow noodles with a nearly flavorless cream coating. The cheese flavor is nearly nonexistent. Maybe the color is tricking your mind into believing that it has a strong cheese flavor?

  2. The only reason to go to Gray Brothers is the pie… Definitely got back there, avoid the food and get the pie. :-)

  3. I don’t think Gray’s is nearly as good as it used to be. I took someone there last spring after not having been for nearly a decade and was disappointed. The servers were also on the grumpy/curt side. I felt like I was having an NYC deli experience (and not in a good way).

We did grab pie to go. The workers in the take-out section were much friendlier, and the banana cream was as good as I remembered. I’m with BennyBenso. Gray’s is pretty much a pie-only destination these days.

  4. I’ll go out on a limb here and say you were the youngest person there?

  5. That mac-n-cheese looks awful — like they put no effort into it whatsoever.

  6. ha ha…by 30 years or so…

  7. Ya know, I had a slice of pie there too and that was pretty bad. I can’t remember what it was, so I didn’t talk about it in the review! I had high hopes based on the amount of cars outside 24/7, but this was a let down.

  8. I am liking this blog. I’ve never been to Gray brothers. down south, around here, in Western NC, we have J&S cafeteria . Good food, at a decent price, but… well, kind of like a mess hall. I suggested it to a cousin awhile back. No, it smells like old people, her grandson said ( he was 5). But they do have damn great pie. and coffee. Why is that? wherever you go, they make great desserts and joe.

  9. Yeah, the south knows how to do this type of food. I lived in TN and as a whole, it was better. The King is creepy, but I miss him.

  10. okay people idk WHAT you are talking about, grays is my life,my love, I litterly just drove from 5 hrs away to get their food, well not their food but their chicken and noodles. They are litterly the love of my life pleaseeee go back and get the chicken and noodles and i promise your veiw of the place will shift, i used to live like 2 min away and then when i moved i had to leave behind my weekly visits so on a good year i come 3 or 4 times , but i also know the owners kim gray and her sons zack and logan(nice family) so my opinion might be a bit screwed anyway let me tell you ,this place is amazing so please stop bashing it:) p.s the pie is amazing

  11. I moved away from Mooresville for 8 years, and returned about a year and a half ago. Gray’s is nothing like it used to be. Pies are average. Food is WAY too salty. Just not as good as it used to be overall.

  12. @Art… not sure, but wow….it was bad.

  13. I visited Grays after not having been there in years – and it was as good now asd it was then….some things have changed – but definitely for the better…..the servers int he cafeteria were not like they used to be – not nearly as nice and nobody went around and refilled coffee and tea like they used to – the chcken was great, the meatloaf was excellent, and the salads were also very good – mashed potatoes and veggies were good the rolls were ok – I remember them being awesome and huge – they have changed…the pies are still the bomb!!! Whoever makes them must stil be there after all these years!! Prices are way too high now – so we don’t go there often…..I can get a deal at almost any other restaurant in the area – so Grays needs to lower their prices….!!! My dinner was 13 bucks…way too much for iced tea, meatloaf, veggie and a slice of pie!!! Come on Gray Brothers – times are tough – give us a break!!!

  14. This place is nasty!!! The food is sooooo tasteless & gross. I really don’t understand why they are always busy. Oh wait, yes I do, it is always full of the elderly. They tend to like the bland food.
