Which Which

I will admit it, I wasn’t that excited when I found out that Which Wich was coming to town. There are over 5 sub shops within 2 miles and I wasn’t sure how Which Wich could grab their market share. A WIBIA reader let me know that it was open in Carmel, IN so I decided to stop by (thanks Erik).
Right when you walk in the door there are 10 slots with paper bags. Each slot corresponds with what kind of sandwich you want. Turkey, Italian, Comfort, Seafood, etc.. For instance, in the Beef section you can get: Roast Beef, Corned Beef, Pastrami, Beef Cheesesteak and Reuben. There are over 50 sandwiches choices and all subs are toasted.
So you grab a bag and make your selection (pic at the top), add your toppings, write your name on it. Cashier puts it on a clothes line and you can follow the status of your sandwich as it is being made.
All sandwiches are $5.10. Chips or cookie and drink combo is $2.50. Milkshake and chips or cookie is $3.50
My first go and I tried the Italian Grinder (Salami, Pepperoni, Capicola). I ran it through the garden and added caramelized onion, banana peppers, lite mayo, oregano, oil & vinegar, hot peppers mix, garlic, provolone, lettuce and tomato. I have to admit, it was pretty good. I really liked the bread. I would put this sandwich up against any chain Italian Grinder, even Penn Station’s. I would say it is a 7 inch sandwich, so not too big and not too small.
I had an Oreo Shake. It was okay. I didn’t love it, but I wasn’t offended. Chips tasted exactly like the Kettle Chips Salt and Pepper. They had a great taste, but really small portion. I would skip the homemade chips. I also had a chocolate chip cookie, it was warm and slightly dry. Paradise Bakery is still the best fast casual cookie. The cookie was mediocre, I would skip this as well.
Would I Buy It Again? At first impression, Yes. If you don’t like what you had, then you probably put a bad combination together. My wife had the Caprese Sandwich and was disappointed, I recommend you to stick to standard sandwich options.
I liked:
- 52 Sandwiches and tons of toppings with a fixed price of $5.10
- Spam and Cheez Whiz are on the menu
- Good bread and honest portion
- Cool concept and discount card
I didn’t like:
- With 52 sandwiches, I imagine a few of these are really bad.
- House chips and cookies are average.

The first thing I thought when you mentioned the ordering process was almost verbatim to this “If you don’t like what you had, then you probably put a bad combination together. ” I love the options but it’s always easy to go over the top and screw it up myself.
I really like the sound of this place. If the bread is good (how’s the rye?) and the service, etc doesn’t disappoint, I’d imagine it’s only time until you’ve creeated a 9/10 sandwich. I wish I had one near me.
Spam and Cheez-Wiz as plus points….awesome!
OK, looks like a place I Need to try!
That looks like a tasty sandwich. The bread sounds good–thats a must in a good sandwich. I love the sound of the concept(clotheslines/fixed prices, lots of toppings).
“With 52 sandwiches, I imagine a few of these are really bad.” LOL! I agree. The minds creativity and the tongues’ taste buds sometimes don’t always see eye to eye!
Here’s there website, by the way, so you can see all the choices:

Regarding the “if you don’t like it…” comment: I’ve done that a few times at BD’s Mongolian BBQ in Indy. I’ll decide to get a little too fancy when assembling my bowl, and it’ll end up sucking. I’ve been there enough times now that I know my limits, lol!
@ bear, thanks for the site…I forgot to add it in there. they just have white and wheat, no rye.
@cress & bronze, the funny thing was that they didn’t have any suggested combinations. So it left people standing there, going through multiple bags, slow to order etc… Plus you would they would suggest a few thing to push it to a more favorable price point?
We went last night and hubby and I both enjoyed our combos. Hubby went with straight ham & cheese, I went with tomato and avocado. Bread really is good, and that makes me very happy! Also had the pineapple shake which was awesome – I don’t normally go for the shakes but couldn’t resist. Bad part was that the worker bees were having some learning difficulties and the (owner?) felt it was necessary to berate them in front of everyone. She gave us and one other couple free sandwich cards for the slow speeds but it let to a slightly uncomfortable moment. They were still making my sandwich back there. Hopefully no retaliatory addons went into it!
I was fairly disappointed in this place. I work in the Carmel area so when a new lunch option opens up I like to check it out. I ordered the Turkey Wich that has the 1,000 Island and cole slaw on it. It was decent, but the bread was hard which made it very difficult and messy to eat. I got a “Just-Out-Of-the-Oven” cookie, which tasted like it was just out of the oven 3 days ago and reheated a couple times since. One of the worst cookies I’ve gotten at a restaurant. I would have tried the homemade chips but it was a tiny bag so i’m sure I’d have been disappointed in the portion size. The staff was friendly. I may try it again in hopes that the first time was just a bad day for them, but I will steer clear of the chips and cookies next time. Hopefully the hard bread isn’t a constant.
