Review: McDonald’s Angus Third Pounders Deluxe Burger
Author: WIBIA | Filed under: Food Reviews, Recommended: Fast FoodI have struggled with the McDonalds menu lately. I am a guy with an above average appetite. When I go to MCD, it is Big Mac or Quarter Pounder. The QPC is so boring and the Big Mac, well… I am kind of tired of them.
If you read about fast food, I am sure that you have already seen the myriad of reviews. No need to go into details here. Since WIBIA is buying about 20 diapers a day, I could only afford to buy one! I decided on the “Deluxe” after reading The Impulsive Buy and Grub Grade, they both liked the Deluxe the best.
Deluxe: Cheeseburger, lettuce, tomato, pickles, red onion, mayo.
Combo Price $5.79
My first impression, this is a nice sized burger, it felt like it could make a dent in my stomach. It was 2:00 and I have yet to eat, so I was starving! When I opened up the bun, there was a shit load of mayo. I would guess 1+ Tablespoon. I don’t eat mayo on my burgers, so I wiped it off. There was one tomato, 3 pickles and 3 rings of red onion. The most impressive part was the quality of the lettuce and pickles. Crunchy pickles and the lettuce was really fresh. I hate the warm-wilty iceberg that you get on a lot of fast food burgers.
As far as taste, it was a little salty upon first bite. However the cheese was nice and melty, and I got a nice crunch from the fresh produce. The sesame seed bun was a nice compliment, it let the burger shine. I would’ve really liked an onion bun here, but oh well.
Would I Buy It Again? Yes! It will go on my Recommended Fast Food list. I would give this burger an 8 out of 10, it was really that good. I might go as far as saying it is one of my favorite burgers ever from MCD; and we all know how much I liked the Beef Wennington! (out of circulation).
As far as larger fast food burgers, MCD is knocking on Hardee’s door. I am not going to go as far as saying that this is better than Hardee’s $6 Dollar Burger, however it is far superior to Burger Kings lame attempt “Steakhouse XT.”
Bravo McDonalds!

For McD’s this looks pretty good, but you aren’t kidding about the mayo [yuck] I would leave the mayo and the tomato off and enjoy! I love red onions on a burger – pretty neat if you don’t want to sit down at a reg. restaurant I think.
Is it just me or does anyone else see the humor in the fact that McDonald’s has two guys running on the box of this burger? Does that mean that you need to do some running before/after you eat this burger in order to not feel guilty about eating it?
“…I might go as far as saying it is one of my favorite burgers ever from MCD.” – Wow! That’s quite a statement. Man I’ll tell you McDonald’s has certainly done well with these. I’ve only heard good things (well mostly).
Now with that much mayo…..are the 20 diapers for you or the kid
I reviewed their Mushroom & Swiss recently, and I liked it a lot. These new burgers are getting pretty positive reviews all around lately, it seems. One common complaint is the excess mayo. Maybe they need to tone it down a bit, lol. I do have to disagree about the Steakhouse XT, though! It doesn’t quite fit into the same category as the Angus burgers everyone else is doing, but I do like them.
@skippy – I drove past Ruby Tuesdays the other day and they and a sign out that said “Burgers $6.99” and I thought, is that even a promo? This burger is close to the level of a good restaurant burger. I am glad they did this and equally as glad to not see a huge backlash that MCD put out a burger that is 700 calories.
@eater – they are probably running to their beds for a nap after eating this.
@Bear – For the kid my friend, for the kid. I have only heard good reviews as well.
@Bomb – Loved your review on the Mushroom Swiss. The amount of mayo was irresponsible. There was probably 150 calories of mayo on it! The parallel to the XT was that it is BK’s premium burger.
I’ve been wondering if one of these was worth a try. If WIBIA likes it, it’s certainly worth a try…which I will!!
I gotta agree with you on this one. While the price is a little high, the burger is pretty delicious. Very impressive considering it’s from McDonalds.
..and why the hell are people running on the box? Good point there.
They look really good. All you review guys seem to love them
You can probably ask for it without mayo and just put it on yourself. Too bad if you asked for it without mayo they wouldn’t knock off a few cents off the price lol.
I had the Bacon & Cheese a while ago, and it was really good. I’m loving the rings of red onion, and the crisp pickles! Bonus: No mayo on it, either
@ John … I think the guy in front stole the wallet from the guy in the back.
I’ve only had the Angus burgers once and have been craving another the last few days. The Deluxe is the way to go if they go easy on the mayo.
It’s hard to find someone who reviews food in Indy, so I must say that I enjoy this site. However, the name of this site sets the bar fairly low, “Would I buy it again.” For me that means anything that is at least average should be worth a yes. This burger is average so I would definitely say it is worthy of a ” yes, I would buy it again.” And compared to the other offerings at McD, it is without a doubt a yes. But the problem lies in comparison. Just a short time ago, you reviewed Five Guys and gave it a No, I would not buy it again. I guess you just prefer that frozen burger taste. If I were an uninformed consumer reading your site, I would believe that Taco Bell is the place to go to get great food in Indy.
The above comment is walking the fine line between constructive criticism, and just being a jerk. I’m sure you can find something else to read online, guy.
Unfortunately, it comes with the territory. At least we are open and honest and post those comments instead of just deleting them like we could. Oh well, hopefully he or she can find something that they like on the site. If not, they can certainly change the channel so to speak and find something else.
“The above comment is walking the fine line between constructive criticism, and just being a jerk.” – That’s EXACTLY what I thought…so I kept my mouth shut because I couldn’t decide. I always find it funny when people criticize something that 1.) they receive for free 2) have the choice to receive it or not 3) haven’t done anything better themselves…..oh well, we all get them from time to time.
Agreed. It just irked me a little. There wasn’t really a point to that whole post other than to essentially say, “Your blog sucks”.
That being said, I love the blog!
True enough, Bear. I’ve been a blogger for many moons, and I’ve had my fair share of haters. I used to get into massive flame wars with them, but then I grew up, lol.
Hehe
Me too! Love the blog, keep up all the awesome work!!
You guys crack me up. I agree with Eater, as long as it is not a total flame, I will usually post the comment, it is good to have a counterpoint as long as it makes sense.
I started this blog because I was tired of every restaurant in Indy receiving a 4 out of 5 stars from local publications. Even though I use a percentage scale for formal reviews, I wanted to do something different for informal reviews. I know that this is “working” because I see the stats and many other review sites saying things like (Would I Get it Again?)… I think that a “Yes” or “No” is more valuable than a 5 rating on a 10 point scale. Plus there are people like Grub Grade that do an excellent job at rating things on a 10 point scale. No need for us to do the same thing, instead we take a different approach.
I never pretend that this blog is anything more than 3 people’s opinions, if anyone has a different opinion, they are welcome to start your own blog. It is pretty easy actually. I would love to read more Indy food review blogs, there are about 4 of us right now!
Obviously any review site is on a comparison model. Our main drivers for comparison are 1. taste of food 2. value/price. I think that the nature of the competitive market sets the bar high. If you look at this burger, I liked it because 1. Best Burger from McDonalds 2. Better than other “premium” burgers from competing fast food restaurants. Price was aligned with those premium burgers. That alone yields a “yes.” Obviously we do not prefer a frozen burger, but my condiments were fresher at MCD and at $5.79 v. $8.+ at 5 Guys, if I had to compare the two (which I normally wouldn’t based of fast food v/ fast casual), MCD would win this one. Not all fresh burgers are created equal, no need to go there.
As I have clearly mentioned before in other post, we have torn apart some very nice restaurants and it is all a comparison based. Check out the San Francisco Eating Guide, I gave a Michelin Star Restaurant a “No.” Obviously the food was better than Taco Bell, however compared to similar restaurants, it didn’t hold up.
Nice explanation but just as a point you have no need to explain yourself….either way, thanks for giving us a rundown on your process
Like I said, I enjoy this site and will continue to frequent it. There was no intent to be a jerk. Open discussion without name calling is the hallmark of a good blog. Nothing in my comment says “your blog sucks.” To the contrary, I like your blog.
Haven’t had the the Deluxe. But the Bacon N Cheese was damn tasty. Red onions and bacon(actual BACON) on a McDonalds burger is RARE. And great. Oh, and the pickles are different from any other McD sandwich. Crunchy and quite tasty(and I hate pickles).
Agreed about the pickles, but you know what ticked me off a little bit? I got a double cheeseburger from McD’s the other day, and they used the crappy regular pickles on it! I thought maybe they had just switched over to the new (tasty) pickles, but apparently those are only for the Angus burgers
Yeah, that sux. I guess I will still “hold the pickles” when i get a dbl cheeseburger. But I do like the new ones on the Angus.
Well, here’s a scenario that ran through my head. I might try it next time:
McDonald’s Drive-thru speaker – “Welcome to McDonald’s, how can I help you?”
Me – “Can I get a double cheeseburger? But I don’t want those nasty regular pickles. Gimme some of those fancy new pickles instead.”
It probably won’t work, but it’s worth a shot.
You might tear a hole in the space-time continuum by doing this. Be careful!
Whoa…I don’t want to do that. I’ll just skip the pickles!
Most disgusting burger I have ever eaten in my life, I could have drunk the grease in a cup, and there must have been half a jar of mayo on the burger, DISGUSTING
Tell us how you really feel! lol
Ha!
