My original post of their Italian Sub still gets a lot of love on the blog. This is my first time trying anything but the Italian Sub at Lenny’s, but not only does this blog advise you where to go, but how to navigate the menu.
The first time I walked into Lenny’s, I asked the lady at the counter, “what’s good here?” Her reply, Philly Cheesesteak and the Italian Sub. She was right about one of them.
What I Ate: Philly Cheesesteak Combo $5.98 with meal deal coupon.
Steak, cheese, held the mayo, lettuce, tomato, wheat bread. Tasteless, boring, kind of greasy and just flat out bad. It needed a little salt and more cheese. The worst part was the bread. I understand, wheat is not the best choice for a Philly Cheese, but it was not toasted at all and a soggy mess (my preference, I know).
Would I Buy It Again? No. Never. Stick to the cold subs here, this was a misfire.
I think that I have given up on Philly Cheesesteak in this city. I want to go to Philly to try the real deal, but I can’t find any other reason to go there and I am not sure I can justify a 10 hour drive for a Cheesesteak.

Yeah…I wouldn’t necessarily blame them, you shouldn’t be getting a Philly Cheesesteak outside of Philly. Only fault them for their gumption
Now I’m not so sure that a Pat’s or Gino’s doesn’t justify a 10 hour trip.
Yeah, that looks like a huge fail. Where’s the whiz???? There’s a few good joints around here with good cheese steaks, so I wouldn’t give up just yet!
I like Greiner’s steak and cheese, but it is not a true Cheesesteak, being sans Cheez Whiz.
I too have considered a trek to Philly for that reason alone!
I think part of the problem is that you got it to go. When a philly is wrapped up with all that heat and moisture you are sure to get soggy bread. Give them another try in store.
I actually ate it there.
We do not put lettuce, tomato or mayo on our cheesesteaks! That is a cheesesteak hoagie and I’ve never seen anyone eat one. Why do other cities kill our steak sandwich.
It is worth a 10 hour drive for a good steak sandwich. I have had all the well known, Pat’s, Genos and Jim’s and think Tony Lukes are by far the best with Abners in University City coming in a close second.
Don’t tempt me Tracy, I might make the drive!
Actually, I’ve had the cheesesteak at Lenny’s more than a few times, but what makes it (and you didn’t have on your sammy) is the pepper relish. It’s downright addictive. Granted it really isn’t technically a cheesesteak, but it is a pretty good sandwich. I don’t usually get lettuce or tomato on mine, but occasionally I like the crunch.
BTW, my fave at Lenny’s is the Chicken Salad sandwich. ‘Tis good.
That is absolutely the worst looking Philly I have ever seen. First off, get rid of the lettuce/tomato. I have been to Philadelphia and these additions to a philly make diehards laugh. Onions are a must in a philly And where is the cheese? Did it crawl out of the sandwich, hoping to escape the embarrassment of being associated with this gimpy ‘wich?
That’s too bad you can’t find a decent philly in Indy. They are a bit happiness in a bun.
I’ve had the cheesesteak at Lenny’s a few times, and they only put lettuce and tomato on it if you ask for it…and they definitely have more cheese than that.
strange, mine was ordered and it just ended up on it. I didn’t order it this way…
I happened to stumpple across your blog while stuck in a small town in the south on a job. Im a Pa. resident and was born and raised there.. now if you want THE CHEESESTEAk experience that will transform your life..its defeintly the heart of where it was created and PHILLY …you need to go.. youl enjoy the trip and the food… you only live once and I say go get that Cheesesteak.. youll never have one that compares to Geno’s…
I tried the philly cheese steak sub from lenny’s fully loaded even with hot pepper relish on white bread an it was fantastic. it was a little soggy but i loved it. the philly cheese steak salad is good too.
Ever tried Philadelphia Steak and Fries? Just west of Zionsville Road on 86th Street.
I enjoyed their cheese steak the first time I had it. You can get it with cheese sauce or melted sliced. Their breakfast is great too. Love their sausage, gravy, and biscuits.
@Erin: wibia has tried that place and we actually have a review in queue for it. Maybe you’ll see it next week!
Wheres the Cheese Wiz….come on America…its not a Philly without it
