What I Ate: Domino’s American Legends Pacific Veggie pizza (Large) $12.99

I was in the mood for something other than my ordinary all meat pizza order and had a $10 gift card, so I figured I’d give this one a shot after seeing so many commercials for the various American Legends pizzas that Domino’s is pushing now.   According to the Domino’s website, this pizza contains roasted red peppers, spinach, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes, black olives with feta and provolone cheeses on a parmesan crust and the combination of all those ingredients was promising enough to get me to abandon my usual all meat policy.

After eating this one, I can confirm all those ingredients are physically on there in good quantities but they are sporadically spread across the top of the pizza with some pieces having a plethora of ingredients while others had very few.  As for the taste of these ingredients, I could only taste a few of them and that was disappointing.  Those aforementioned ingredients were also soggy, bland and definitely not fresh.  I particularly noticed the spinach as it seemed as if it was several days old and that was pretty disgusting.  As for the cheeses, there was a barely tasteable dusting of parmesan cheese ON TOP of the pizza (not in the crust as promised) but the feta and provolone cheeses were virtually undetectable.  The “parmesan crust” also tasted pretty much identical to a standard Domino’s hand tossed pizza crust as well, so there was another failure.

Would I Buy It Again?  No, probably not unless I was really craving something different and I would only buy it then if it was at the current $12.99 promotional price or I had a gift card like I did today.  It’s too bad because I really was excited for this pizza and after my first couple bites, it really did taste pretty decent.  But, after I started concentrating more on the taste and trying to detect all the ingredients, the quality just got worse and worse.  Domino’s really did have a good and potentially tasty idea here, but they really need to a better job in execution.

  1. Yeah, I wouldn’t trust a nice quality fresh pie to come from these guys, especially when they’ve got those rare (for them) ingredients like spinach. It was probably shipped frozen then thawed and sat for quite a bit. No good. I like the idea of the new pies but they really should just stick to delivering pepperoni and cheese :P

Too bad about the feta and Parmesan too, those can be potent and delicious ingredients….we’ve got this Greek veggie pie….mmmmmmm, feta onions, garlic, black olives, pesto…did I say “mmmmmmm”?

  2. Bear, that Greek veggie pizza sounds delicious. I might have to try to make that one on my own sometime using Greek olives instead of black olives. Or, maybe I’ll use both!

  4. Ick, never been a Domino’s fan. That pizza doesn’t sound very appetizing, what with the nasty old spinach. No excuse for that…

  5. @Bear is everything really frozen from Dominos? :P

  6. I’ve actually never seen their line but from taste…I’d imagine so :P

  7. Of the Legends….I’ve had the BBQ Chicken (shocker) and the Hawaiian…I didn’t like either of them. The Hawaiian was sadly lacking enough pineapple and the BBQ Chickens sauce was blech! But it’s pizza, even when it’s bad it’s still pretty good.

  8. Pineapple should be illegal on pizza.

  9. Couldn’t agree more. Whoever decided to put pineapple on pizza first should be waterboarded.

  10. Great so Randy and I are paying more money to eat what were probably frozen ingredients when we could just buy a frozen pizza from the grocery store :P
Come on @Bear open a Pizza Party here in York, PA :D

  11. My girlfriend loves Dominos so I am forced to eat it from time to time. Usually hate it, but the Buffalo chicken one is actually not too bad.

Agreed on the pineapple. One of my least situations in the world is when you’re ordering pizza with a group of people, one person suggests pineapple, and others agree that is an acceptable, and delicious, pizza topping. It makes me want to no longer associate with that group.

  13. Hmmm, I love pineapple on pizza. You must all be wrong. ;)

  14. Every since Domino’s has 1 topping medium for $5 each (buy 3) I start to cringe paying $13 for a pie there. I know that it is going to be lame-o, so I might as well pay $2 more and get 3 pizzas.

I am really tempted to do a $5 pizza shoot out. Little Caesar’s “Hot & Ready,” Domino’s and then the Pizza Mia. Hmmm….

@John: ha, I agree. Once people start ordering stupid shit, I just want to leave.

My brother (EatHSE) dialed in to a pizza place in college and forgot to get everyone’s order, so while on the phone with the pizza place:
Bro: “what does everyone want on their pizza?”
Girl in the room: “cheese pizza.”
Bro: “Cheese already comes on the pizza, what do you want on it?!”
    Girl: “Onions”
Bro: “You seriously want a f-ing cheese and onion pizza?”

Needless to say, we never talked to her again.

  15. I work at dominos, and nothing is frozen. All ingredients are fresh and stored in a refrigerator. Also, this is one of my favorite pizzas if made properly. Yours was probably made by some lazy employee who didn’t take their time.

  16. No to the frozen. Domino’s only has the refigerators in their stores. The spinach is fresh as well as all the veggies. I must be upfront and say that I have owned and managed a Domino’s for over 20 years. The Legends line of Pizzas, made properly and with an even distribution of toppings is phenomenally good. The Parmesan is supposed to be on the edge of the crust, on top – (not in) as well as a light sprinkle over the top. The Feta and provolone are great accents. Its disappointing to see this great pie made poorly. Too bad all Domino’s get judged by the worst experiences.

  17. Thanks for your thoughts and clarifying the frozen aspect. All the ingredients together sound good, so I imagine that if made with a little care, this could be good. I don’t dislike Domino’s as much as others, but it seems like something is missing and I can’t put my finger on it. My guess is somewhere in the sauce. For the price, there are few pizza chains that can deliver the value. Thanks again for your comment.

  18. @Anthony: I can totally understand the difference in what a finished product SHOULD be, and how it can come out after being handled by an uncaring worker. I’m sure that pizza is great when prepared as intended. I’ve only had Domino’s a couple of times when I was younger, and I didn’t like it. But I wouldn’t be opposed to trying it again if there were one nearby. Thanks for the info :)

  19. Yeah I work at dominos as well. We don’t have anything frozen ever. Not even when its brought by the commisary. The spinach is the same spinach you buy in your grocery store and we throw out what’s not used nightly and open a new bag the next day. All of the ingredients on this pizza are fresh and the cheesy crust is a crust topped with cheese not embedded with it. Honestly 5 years ago when I worked at a different dominos I couldn’t stand it. I thought it was nasty. Now with all the changes made to our product I actually think its pretty good and I am picky when it comes to my pizza. All frozen pizzas are horrible. I like gourmet pizza like Red’s Savoy or Carbones or Sarpinos. Dominos is now on that list as well. Only thing good about little caesars is their crazy bread and only thing good about pizza hut is the stuffed crust pizza.
