KFC $5 Fill-Up Box

I really struggle to believe that Subway has such a market presence that they can set the bar on what an acceptable price is for a meal.  $5 Foot-Long Promo has made KFC and Pizza Hut both offer options at $5.00 and I have a bad feeling there is more to come.  We talked about the P’Zone and liked it, now on to KFC.  Before we start and just to confirm, I still dislike Subway.

KFC has 4 Options for their $5 Fill Up Box:
2 Piece (white or dark)
5 Hot Wings
3 Original Recipe Strips
Twister Wrap

You also get a medium soda, choice of side and a biscuit.

I ordered the 2 piece white with mashed potatoes.  I really like KFC mashed potatoes, always have, always will.  Because I ordered mashed potatoes, I didn’t get a kick ass box, I got a normal tray.  I asked for honey and for some reason I got a package of grape jelly.  Odd, because what do they use grape jelly for?!?  Maybe a biscuit.

So is this a good deal?

Off the normal menu – 2 Piece White, 2 Side, biscuit is $5.89 (no drink)
Medium Drink is $1.49
Total: $7.38

Lets drop a side item to equal the contents of the Fill-Up Box
$7.38 – $1.49 (price of a side) = $5.89  (back to original cost of the meal above, just switching a side for a drink).

Yes and no. In someways, it is like having a 89¢ coupon.  Let me ask you this, if they gave you an $.89 coupon, would you go?  Probably not.   However, if you order the dark meat 2 piece 2 side meal, you actually come out a loser.  Your best deal here is getting the normal meal, skipping the soda or take it to go and drink a generic soda for about 20¢ a can and calling it a day.

Would I Buy It Again?  I don’t know! (our first one) This is almost all marketing, but it is smart for KFC to do.  If I wanted a soda and didn’t mind dropping a side, then it makes sense.  If I want water or am taking it to go, I will probably stick to the conventional meals.  However, for $5, I was pretty content.

By the way, the chicken was actually pretty good.  Nice sized pieces, moist and they were really hot as if they were freshly cooked. Original recipe still hits the spot from time to time.  However, KFC may have the worst customer service in the biz.

If your order mashed potatoes, they give you a plate. Still a $5 Fill Up.

  1. “…it is like having a $.89 coupon. Let me ask you this, if they gave you an $.89 coupon, would you go? Probably not.” – That’s a great point. It would be interesting to figure out the math of some other promotions. A lot of time people don’t think about that. It’s funny how good marketing is sometimes. Subway did do a tremendous job with that campaign though….seriously!

  2. I think the key to the success of this promotion is that it’s “easy”. No coupon to clip and carry around with you. Just go and order. We Americans like our stuff easy, and I think it’ll be a success for KFC.

  3. Hmmm…I might opt for the 2 Twister version. I don’t like how combo prices always include a fountain drink purchase. 98% of what I drink is water anyways. I barely even sip any of my combo beverage.

  4. I wish the KFC in my town wasn’t disgusting! It’s just dirty, and the employees don’t look like they bathe regularly. I still go for it once or twice a year, but that’s it.

  5. This is the post that I found you blog for. Thanks for the great read this evening. I have enjoyed every minute of it and I am sorry for all the comments I left – but you all are a great time and although I am not in Indy, I can relate to some.

I think I need to come to Indy for I Sushi tho’. :D Thanks again. I am posting a link on my blog and I will be back. Love me some foodie blogs even if I don’t live in the area.

Take care and happy eating. :D

  6. Thanks Skippy and thanks for the post. I-Sushi is pretty tasty for quick strip mall sushi. We actually have some great sushi places here, odd because we are so landlocked!.

  7. Adam Bomb..that’s awful. You don’t have another KFC where you are at? I have had problems w/ a couple KFC where I live, but i just go to another location. Too bad if you don’t have that option.

  8. I just grabbed one of these $5 fill up boxes and feel like I got totally screwed. I had seen one of the commercials and thought it didn’t look like a bad deal. So I pulled into the KFC drive through by where I work. I went with the hot wings package with cole slaw, paid, then drove back to work to eat.

When I opened the surprisingly lightweight box I was greeted with utter disappointment. The contents of the box were 5 “hot” wings and a container of cole slaw with the lid half on. No biscuit! WTF!? Every add I had seen showed a biscuit with the meal or at least a box that was literally overflowing with food. This was the most pathetic portion for $5 I have had in a long time.

The wings were terrible. There was no “hot” in the excessively breaded hot wings at all. The cole slaw was the most bland coleslaw I have ever had. I recall KFC coleslaw being much better.

So after eating and feeling totally unsatisfied with the dismal meal, I decided to go back to the KFC and see if I could get my biscuit. Hell, the receipt shows a biscuit on it, however it also said I got the 2 piece chicken deal. So anyway I get back to the KFC and explain that I did not get a biscuit. The girl who took my order told me that since I got the hot wings I don’t get a biscuit. Thanks for telling me, KFC!! Nowhere do any of their ads say this. Why would you not get one if you get these tiny crappy wings, you get one if you get the much larger 2 piece meal. I wouldn’t have ever even stopped at the KFC had I known I wouldn’t be getting a biscuit.

It had been a long time since I had gone to a KFC. I was going to actually go to subway and get a 5 dollar footlong but decided to give KFC a try. Never again. I’d have been much more satisfied by a footlong subway sandwich than this sorry excuse for a meaL.

  9. I decided to go to KFC after work last night to get something to eat. I ordered the big box 3 piece strips and when I get to the house it’s my strips with double the amount of wedges. I wondered why, then I realized they didn’t give me my biscuit. KFC tends to have a bad habit of not getting your order right. Or it could be they need to hire competent people. Not that my not getting my biscuit was a huge issue but if they didn’t have any more made for the night then say so. Don’t stuff my box with extra stuff to compensate me for not giving me a biscuit.
I wont be buying it again-didn’t feel that I was getting my moneys worth.
