Indianapolis Monthly – People's Choice 2009
Author: WIBIA | Filed under: Announcements/NewsJust ran across Indianapolis Monthly – People’s Choice Winners for 2009. Writing about food in this great city, I always wonder how my opinions hold up to the general public.
I agree with:
Best Restaurant: Eddie Merolt’s.
A few choices that I disagree with (strongly):
Best Mexican: Cancun. Weak, really weak.
Best Pizza: Bazbeaux. It gets the award every year, boring. I have a good feeling that the majority of people do not visit the Carmel location (horrible service and ruining the Baz reputation).
Japanese: Sakura. No. Try “Miyagi’s”, “I Sushi” or “Bu Da Lounge.” Maybe 2 years ago I would agree, but with these three restaurants opening this year, it is not even close. I am not 100% sure any of those three consider themselves Japanese, but if you are craving sushi/Pan Asian…there are better.
Most Romantic: Melting Pot. So overpriced. Riddle me this: bread dipped in a bowl of cheese, the worst house salad ever and strawberries in chocolate. How is that romantic?

Cancun as the best Mexican is a travesty.
I recommend La Villa on Oxford and Michigan. It’s in an old Village Pantry. Obviously, it’s the real deal. There’s plenty of good Mexican here if you look beyond the bland. Heck even El Sol de Tala would be a better choice than Cancun, and who doesn’t know about El Sol?
That Eddie Merolt’s does look amazing.
I don’t know, I know they’re over-hyped but fondue is fun
You don’t get atmosphere like that too often…it’s a fun change of pace.
agree 100%. thanks for the heads op on la villa.
Cancun? Really? It just goes to show how you really have to look to find good eats in Chain-City USA.
Miyagi’s oysters were fresh and the best I have had in Indianapolis.
There is a reason you do not find fondue at too many places. Rubbery meat is horrible.
Agree wholeheartedly on Bazbeaux – what a sham.
For an unexpectedly good pizza try Binkley’s at Kessler and College. The cheese blend they use is fabulous and they have that wonderful cornmeal-dusted crust – yum!
Thanks for the tip Erin. Love cornmeal dusted crust..
I’d just like to say that Hoosiers are fantastic people and all but you can’t trust their opinion on food at all. There is NO good food in Indiana and I’ve eaten just about everywhere.
Whitney, what a bold statement…and rude to boot! I’m guessing you truly haven’t eaten everywhere. There are plenty of wonderful places to eat in Indiana.
