In Indiana and need a few ideas on where to eat?
Author: WIBIA | Filed under: Announcements/NewsWe have been pretty chain heavy the last 10 posts so I thought that I would share local love for Indianapolis. If you follow the blog, you can see that Indianapolis has lost a few local gems, Cafe Nora last week, Elements a few months ago etc… We are starting to lose our grip on what is a very luke warm food scene in this fine city.
One of my favorite things to do (before baby) in the summer is to pack an overnight bag and hit the road and try new places and see where that takes me. I usually ask my friends…”try anything good lately?” and use their suggestions as my roadmap. Should you not have any friends or don’t trust their opinion….you usually look at bogus People’s Choice lists like this one from the usually enjoyable Indianapolis Monthly.
What you should do is ask a local that knows their way around. Since you made it to my blog, you already know one person
Let me introduce you to another.
Check out this post from Chuck, The Indy Gastro Gnome. There are few times that I see a “best of list” that: 1. I agree with the majority of it. (Dunaway’s, great view, food doesn’t wow me) (Melting Pot, not a fan of fondue, but that is just me. 2. This lists motivates me to try new places.
Just to set your expectations, this is not the Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives list. This is your “I want the best and I don’t care paying for it.” I am not saying that all of them are expensive, but a little pricier than tacos, pizza and burgers that are the WIBIA standard fare. So print Chuck’s list, pack up the car and hit the road!

If you are coming to Indiana this week to see NASCAR’s Allstate Brickyard 400, Welcome. Speedway is an interesting place but not the best to eat. I am a huge NASCAR fan. If anyone that reads the blog has suggestions for good bar food in Speedway..pass some names to me. It is time to go racing.
“…pack an overnight bag and hit the road and try new places and see where that takes me.” – That rocks! I seriously would love to do trips like that. I’m thoroughly jealous. Love to see what you come up with!
There’s a delightful little place here in Crawfordsville, which is about an hour north-east of Indy. It’s called the Iron Gate. It’s a little pricey, but they have excellent food, and their French Onion soup is killer! It’s a “dress nice” kind of place, and you can plan on spending 40-50 bucks for a couple to eat there, without wine/beer. Definitely worth the money, though.
For great old-fashioned drive-in food (and awesome tenderloins), try Mug ‘n Bun in Speedway on 10th street, just east of Lynhurst…they also make their own root beer. For Breakfast, Charlie Brown’s on Main Street….also in Speedway…..and just north of Charlie Brown’s on Main St. is Dawson’s, a bit more upscale.
