So we all get coupons in the mail, it seems like a ton of them lately. I am a huge tightwad, I just am. I don’t skimp when it comes down to food or cool toys for myself, but I rarely buy something without a discount.
My wife and I wanted to get pizza real quick. There were 2 Jack’s Pizzas in the freezer and we were going to do that, but we had some Donatos coupons so I suggest we use them. There were 8 coupons and I was trying to think about what the best deal was. I didn’t have my heart set on certain toppings.
After about 10 minutes of starring in a trance and my very patient wife – getting very impatient just said order something!!!
The day after, I looked at the coupons and said, what is the best deal on here. I added up the price of each discount and wondered what had the best % off.

It appears to be medium pizzas fair a little better.
It is not this simple though. I priced 2 larges as single toppings, if you get a signature pizza, it is about $6.00 more for 2 pizzas. The $5 off 2 larges is a pretty weak deal.
Also, a 2 liter is $2.49 (rip off). The large single stix and 2 liter is only saving you $3.48, basically you are getting the breadsticks for free (they cost $3.29). So they are thinking “buy a large pizza at normal price, and an overpriced 2 liter and we will throw in breadsticks.” I can only imagine the cheapest thing for a pizza place to make is breadsticks. Bear, help me out here.
So I ordered the 3 mediums for $7 each and will come to terms with the leftovers! They were pretty good, check them out.

Hahahaha, that is SO freakin’ cool!!!!!! I have ALWAYS wanted to do something like this (I love food, deals and math). This is such a cool idea.
Yes my friend that is pretty accurate on the breadsticks….especially considering labor and such, they’re VERY cheap and VERY easy. Salads a VERY cheap too, especially considering what you can mark them up to.
Damn…..now I’m going to want to do this for all offers around. More more more!
Again, hate to repeat myself…but…brilliant! You should’ve gone over your whole process with the high school gal that answered the phone…you know with over the top enthusiasm….see if she went along….she’d be like “okay………………so you want the mediums then? Sir you could’ve just told me that.”
Great now I want pizza! Mediums are the best!
Randy and I always go for the deals as well! It’s kinda the same situation, he looks for the best deal while I’m starving and begging him to order already.
Gosh it has been 3 weeks since I had pizza, I think that is a record! I’m going through withdraw!
Wow, I can’t believe all the work you went to in this….make my mind spin!!
I just found a Donatos in my area about 20 minutes away, in another city. I think I will try them out. Its been a month since I had a pie…I’m ready to try something new.
let us know how it is Cress!
The deal decoder is a great idea!!! I should call you up to do the dirty work whenever I get a coupon sheet in the mail, lol. I just wish the nearest Donato’s wasn’t an hour away
I live in the thriving metropolis (SARCASM) of Crawfordsville, and it’s tough to justify a trip to Indy just for pizza…
The math teacher in me had to look at this in more detail. The true best value comes down to how much you are paying a square inch. I do pizza math with my students all the time. Here is an example. Knowing the diameter of the pizza sizes is key at determining value. First the data or how many square inches are in a given pizza based on it diameter in inches.
10 in pizza = 79 sq in
12 in pizza = 113 sq in
14 in pizza = 154 sq in
16 in pizza = 201 sq in.
In the case of Donato’s their larges are 14 in and mediums are 12. This means you get 339 sq in of pizza with their 3 for $21 vs 308 sq in with two larges that cost more. in this special the medium’s win out.
However, if you look at standard prices, ordering larges over mediums is almost always a better value per square inch as we see in this next example.
I recently gave a positive review for Nancy’s Pizza Original Thin Crust Pizza. If you order a thin crust pizza with 2 toppings, here is what you will pay per square inch.
10in $11.45 = 14.5 cents per square in.
12in $14.50 = 12.8 cents per square in.
14in $19.15 = 12.4 cents per square in.
16in $24.80 = 12.3 cents per square in.
SO, never order a small. Cold pizza leftovers are always good. I wonder how that stacks up to a Belly Buster at Pizza Party in California?
Nice work, you might be in charge of “Deal Decoder” form here on out!
Hahaha, geek!!! I love math too
It’s about 9 cents per square inch on the Belly Buster, best deal!
I know where I am going the next time I come to California.
