Good morning sunshine! I think that this is my first breakfast review? Original Pancake House started in Portland, OR in 1953 and is around 100 locations. It is one of those places that I have driven by, but never stopped. My Mom loves it and she was in town on a Saturday morning, so…..
What I Ate: Corned Beef Hash $8.65. It comes with 2 eggs and 3 pancakes.
The hash is homemade here. The menu states a blend of kosher corned beef, potatoes, onions and cream. I didn’t taste any cream, in fact I thought that it was a touch dry. The onions were transparent, which was added to the taste but did nothing for the texture. It was good, above average and I liked it, but lacked any real punch or originality.
Sunny side eggs were a touch overcooked. The three pancakes were as good as anywhere else that you can find. Nothing interesting here.
Would I Buy It Again? Probably not. This is a pancake, waffles and crepes place. I had part of an omelet that my brother had and it was average. If you like corned beef, it is pretty good, but probably not the reason that you should go there. The portions sizes are a little big at times. I would prefer them to be a little smaller and cheaper. My brother’s omelet came with 3 pancakes as well, too much food. Most omelets were around $9.00+
If you are into sugary sweet breakfast items and paying $9.00 for pancakes topped with gooey sweet items, I think that this might be your place. Otherwise…”eh!”
Nutrition facts are nowhere to be found. That is probably a good thing!

I would classify this place as mediocre at best. I’ve been there at least twice. Once where I got the hash/pancakes and another time where I got the omelet. I would have classified the hash as average and the omelet was slightly below average (although it was absurdly HUGE). The pancakes were solid, but not great. The prices here are high too and I never like that.
Definitely not worth visiting unless you are dragged there by others.
Sad to hear it…I was hoping they’d be better. I think one of the problems is breakfast, and pancakes in general, is pretty easy to do right…just takes some love (and butter, and syrup, and grease). You can always find a good local breakfast place that will beat these larger places any day…and if you’re looking to beat the price you could always saddle up at IHOP or Denny’s (what’s it like $3.99 for a Slam?).
I was watching Man V Food last night…I think it was the Portland one with the ‘uge “Mancakes”…those looked damn good.
How do you screw up a pancake though…I guess if it were under/over cooked…but that’s like the first thing a line cook learns, right?
I am still looking for a good greasy spoon in Indy. I am sure I will find one. Love Man V Food and that is a good one. Mancakes… Ha! love it. I have had bad pancakes. they were like a sponge, wehn I poured syrup on them, it absorbed right into the cake instead of pooling around the cake. They were so dry!
Try Just Judy’s on 54th and Keystone (or maybe it’s 52nd and Keystone…I can’t remember). It is one of the best, if not the best, greasy spoon I’ve found in Indianapolis.
I have had my fill of this place. They nickel and dime you on everything. For example, I like omelets and not only do theirs have 4 eggs, you get full pancakes with your omelet. No only is the omelet too big, but I do not like or eat pancakes. If you ask to substitute pancakes for regular pancakes, that charges your a fee of around $2 to substitute making my $11 omelet with coffee $13. Bigger portions are not always better. Until they provide their customers with some options, I have made my last visit to the pancake house.
Well said. This place needs to get a grip. $13 for breakfast is a lot of money! But then again, the line is usually out the door. My favorite breakfast is Mexican in nature. 1/2 mile down the road, you can hit Qdoba for a breakfast quesdilla or burrito for $6.00 and you weill be set. Pancakes iwnt maple syrup and topped with almonds and powdered surage or whatever??? Lame, bogus, overpriced and horrible for you.
Comments are spot on. We have them here in jacksonville and it’s the same. Way too expensive for a lousy pancake breakfast. Go to denny’s or the like and save your money.
A pancake is a pancake.
Have you ever been to The Roost? If you prefer a more savory brunch than sweet, The Roost is a good spot to try. It’s at 116th and Allisonville, and is part of the Sahm’s chain. Really good food (their sausage gravy should be its own food group!) and decent prices – Much more so than OPH. I’d love to see you review it sometime – and maybe I could join you as a guest reviewer, LOL.
I have been to The Roost and I would agree that it is certainly better than Original Pancake House.
@ Fishers Gal. I haven’t been to The Roost. Based on the cars in the parking lot on a weekend morning, it seems to be popular. Yum to biscuits and gravy! I will add it to my list.
You missed the main attractions — I don’t like their omelettes and the regular pancakes are average. However, try a German Pancake or the smaller Dutch Baby. If you can tolerate the calories, the Apple Pancake is one of the best things there is.
