Review: Pizza Hut Meaty P’Zone
Author: indianapoliseater | Filed under: Food Reviews, Recommended: Chain RestaurantWhat I Ate: Meaty P’Zone $5.99
Grub Grade already gave this a positive review, but I’ll admit that despite their review, I was fully prepared to write a review that destroyed this P’Zone for two reasons:
1. I am not a big fan of calzones, which is what this P’Zone is.
2. Pizza places try specialty items like this all the time (read: Bread Bowl Pasta, Pasta pairs, etc.) and rarely do they taste good and/or stay on the menu for an extended time.
But, after eating this P’Zone, all my pre-conceived notions about calzones and pizza place specialty items have gone out the window because this thing was damn good. As stated, I got the meaty P’Zone and it is basically just the standard Pizza Hut Meat Lover’s pizza (my favorite) put inside of calzone breading, served with a side of marinara dipping sauce and topped with a sprinkle of cheese and italian seasoning.
The flyers that I got in the mail said this thing would be over ten inches long and weigh approximately one pound. I got the tape measure out and measured mine at eleven inches, so they certainly filled the length requirement. Alas, I left my digital scale at my nuclear weapons test lab, so I couldn’t get an accurate weight measurement, but I would not dispute that it was in the one pound ballpark. If I was a person that had a regular appetite (I’m definitely not), this would be more than enough food for one sitting. But since I’m a recovering fat man with a monster appetite, I was still a hungry after this one and I certainly wasn’t doing myself any favors in the health department by adding more food to the 1,480 calories that I consumed in this thing.
As for the taste, my P’Zone was just as meaty as the Meat Lover’s pizza always is and the cheese was warm, soft and gooey, all of which were huge positives. The outside breading was a little tough, but I could live with that since the it had to be tough enough to hold all the ingredients that they piled in there. The insides could have used a little more sauce to start, so I just used the marinara sauce and poured it inside to compensate for this “issue” (I have a personal preference toward saucy things, but not everyone may be that way).
Would I Buy It Again? Absolutely Yes. The taste was outstanding and for a sale price of $5.99, you can’t beat it. Even at the regular price of $6.99, I would still buy it if I was aiming for something out of the ordinary that wasn’t a normal pizza but had the pizza flavor. I will say that $6.99 is right about at the mythical “glass ceiling” that I would pay for this thing though. If they priced it any higher, I would not buy it again due to price. Regardless, Pizza Hut has got themselves a keeper here and hopefully this one will stay on the menu into the future.

HUZZAHH!!! Finally someone who likes P’Zones other than my brother and I. I’ll admit I rarely ever get a P’Zone because for the most part I HATE Pizza Hut or Pasta Hut or The Hut or Jabba the Hut or whatever they are called now. I just never feel that yeah, I can probably hit up my local sub shop or Greek/Italian hole in the wall joint and get an amazing calzone, but I’ve never taken into account giving a poor grade because it doesn’t measure up to a little specialty eatery. I try to compare things based on where in the spectrum something should be categorized…i.e. comparing chicken nuggets from Wendy’s, BK and McDonald’s is fair…not comparing a McNugget to a higher quality restaurant/bar/grill chicken tender. I’ve always hated Pizza Hut (especially the greasy crust of the pan styles) so when I found something that I didn’t hate there, I immediately praised that one redeeming quality. I’m not trying to say P’Zones are heavenly but to me it’s the closest thing to heaven you’ll find in the Hell that is Pizza Hut.
That being said, I like the Classic P’Zone, (sausage, green pepper and red onion). It’s filling and a pretty decent individual value when you compare it to ordering a stack of pizzas for a group.
Thanks for the shout my friend!
I’ll disagree with you on Pizza Hut because it is probably my favorite of all the major national chains (Dominos, Papa John’s, Donato’s, etc.). I usually get thin crust though, so that’s why the crust style doesn’t really bother me.
And it’s not just us that like the P’Zone. I talked to some friends about them and apparently one of my friends just worships them and gets them on a regular basis.
Dang, 1,480 calories!!! …and for $5.99! You can’t beat that. Especially when it’s yummy.
I’m surprised you enjoyed it so much. I haven’t (and obviously won’t) try this but it’s good hear that it’s good.
You know, I haven’t been much of a fan of those things but I haven’t tried out the meaty variety yet.
Bear, can you make me a Tandori Chicken Calzone? I’m on the next flight there, if so.
ABSOLUTELY! When do you arrive?
Agreed on trying to compare like items. I have said NO to some pretty high end meals, but I will put pizza by the slice and tacos on my Wall of Fame. The I tend to look at the restaurant as do you… for instance, for Pizza Hut, this is pretty good.
I have tried to like the P’Zone. I love Pizza Hut(as well as Papa Johns). And for a little over $5, it is a lot of filling food. BUT..I think it is a little bland. And I wish the damn sauce was on the INSIDE of the P’Zone. If the sauce they give you to dip it in is supposed to be the same they put on their regular pizzas, it sure doesn’t taste like it. I got one again about a month ago. After eating half of it one night(and being disappointed), I cut the rest open the next day. I poured in the leftover sauce, and put in a Special Seasoning packet I had left from a Papa Johns pizza. It definitely made it better.
Calzones aren’t supposed to have sauce on the inside, people.
Last night we purchased 2 P”Zone and was unable to eat them because they were extremely dry and did not come with any sauce on the side. I thought they were suppossed to! Essentially we received pizza dough with cheese spread all over – absolutely nothing else. In addition, the Pizza Hut on Merrivale road could not decide whether they should charge us $13.49, $15.00 or $12.00 even though there was a poster on the wall advertising 2 for $12.00. I finally paid $12.00 after speaking to the manager.
Yikes. Sounds like you’ve got yourself a very poorly run Pizza Hut in your area.
