Chain Restaurants on the Ropes?

Author: WIBIA | Filed under: Announcements/News

Check out this article here on Yahoo discussing restaurants that may look a little different by the end of the year.

Perkins
El Torrito
Sbarro
Captain D’s
Krispy Kreme
Mastro’s

I wasn’t all that shocked until we got to this one, Mastro’s.

Really?!  I have been to the original in Scottsdale twice and it was packed both times.  At Mastro’s, steaks are $30+, tie and jacket service, Ferrari’s and Lambo’s outside etc.  Not only that, the Mastro family sold it in 2007 for millions and now it is in the tank?  Hmmm.  Either way, interesting read…

  1. I don’t go there often anymore, but I would truly miss Perkins if it went under. Their country fried steak and I used to have a very serious and loving relationship.

  2. Sometimes traffic can be deceiving…when are you seeing it? How long does it actually last for? Is it just Friday/Saturday night?

This line sums it up pretty well:
“It helps if they’ve been run conservatively, with low borrowing costs and cash held for a rainy day.”

Usually the ones that fail haven’t done that and that’s why a year or two of slumping sales will do them in. It’s tough to teach an old dog new tricks.

  3. I can see why Krispy Kreme is on the list as it is a poorly run company. To find a fresh Krispy Kreme in the morning is a real challenge and you have to go out of the way to get one.

  4. Good point and I am sure that you can speak to it better than I can. I read that if you plan on opening a new restaurant, that you should expect 2 years of no one walking in the door. if you don’t have that kind of cash, then forget about it!
