Star Trek: Two Thumbs Up!

Author: WIBIA | Filed under: Announcements/News

Ok, so I know that it is a food site and not movie reviews. However, EatHSE and I checked out the new Star Trek on the IMAX last night. It was a great movie and highly recommended. Star Trek lost the nerdiness of the last 30 years. I have seen just about all Star Trek movies and almost every episode of The Next Generation. My wife said this makes me a nerd, but since she married me, she is automatically a nerd as well.

Back to the movie. This movie kind of reminds me “Titanic.” Ya know, a love story that just happens to be on a sinking ship. I am not sure if I can say this is a SciFi movie. It is a movie about two outcasts (Spock/Kirk) from different planets (literally) unite to use their own diversity as their strength. Oh yeah, it just happens to be on The USS Enterprise and it happens to be in space.

I will leave the rest of the reviews to the pros, but this is a great movie. As good as it was, my top two movies are still intact.
1. “Seabiscuit”
2. “Borat”

Yup, that’s right!

  1. The nerdiness is what made Star Trek fun and if it’s lost that, then I don’t want to be part of it. Also, are you saying this is a love story between Kirk and Spock? Gross. Does Mr. Sulu (the original one) get involved too?

That said, nothing beats the original Star Trek series.

  2. I’ve never seen a Star Trek movie or TV episode but this looks like it’s worth seeing.

Seabiscuit & Borat, really? Are you looking forward to Bruno?

    My top movie are:
1.) Charlie & The Chocolate Factory (1980s version)
    2.) Any LOTR
    3.) Elf
    4.) Good Will Hunting
5.) A load of others tie this spot

  3. All very good. Elf? Really?! Extending it to 5, I would have to add Rocky to my list and 40 Year Old Virgin, not sure after that. Yes, Seabiscuit. Seabiscuit is an amazing story of 4 down and out characters who are able to untie and find great success. Even when they are faced with adversity, they keep their commitment to excellence, rebound and win again. Beautiful!

  4. Being a rather staunch Star Trek fan (seen every STOS, NG, DS9, and movies), I do have some concerns about it losing its ‘nerdy’ side. I feel that the franchises’ method of not treating it’s viewers as if they are a bunch idiots is much if it’s charm. With that fanboy rant finished ;) , I am looking very forward to seeing this movie, and am glad to hear you enjoyed it.

  5. 100% agree with you. Nerdy = charm for the franchise. Not to spoil it, but viewers need to understand the concepts of the time space continuum (like in Back to the Future) and a few other concepts like black holes etc… I am on the fence at times. I don’t like games like RockBand (grab a real instrument), but if it turns kids on to music that they have never heard of before, then I can’t complain really. It is an entry movie, no doubt about it and I think that it did a good job riding the fence and staying true to the game. There were plenty of Trekkies, and they seemed happy and clapping at the end.

  6. 96% on RT. My hopes are high. I’m seeing it today.

  7. Caught the 9am…yes 9am screening this morning…$6bucks…at 830am there was already a line of geeks at least 50 deep…so I included myself amongst them. I had really high hopes and I just have to say…BELIEVE THE HYPE!!! Yeah…it’s that good. Really good, young cast…this franchise is going to make billions…it’s pretty open-ended. There will be many more of these. I couldn’t be happier. Weekend box office prediction… 126 million.

  8. Glad that you liked it too. I was a great movie. I agree, very open ended, but that is a good thing.

  9. 76.5million..over the weekend….my prediction was only off by 50million. hahahaha.

  10. We are better at food than movies, that is for sure!

  11. Saw it this weekend and it was great! Now we must wait for the next one ;)

  12. Good hearing your opinion from a true Star Trek Fan. 2 people saw it this weekend from work and loved it.

  13. EVERYONE I’ve talked to who saw it absolutely loved it…ever cutesie girlie girls I know.

  14. Be careful Bear…. you might have to rename your blog if you are too fond of said cutesie girls!

  15. Hehe :) I can be as fond of them as I’d like….it’s the problem of them being fond of me that keeps the title in tact :P
