Review: Taco Bell Grilled Chicken Soft Taco & Grilled Chicken Burrito

Author: indianapoliseater | Filed under: Food Reviews, Recommended: Fast Food

Taco Bell’s Why Pay More value menu is maybe one of the greatest innovations in the fast food industry.  With items varying from 79¢ to 89¢ to 99¢, it’s good, cheap and easy.  I only usually order one other item that’s not on this value menu (Meximelt), so I’m a big fan.  They’ve recently introduced two new items to this menu, so I figured I’d give them a shot.

What I Ate:  Grilled Chicken Soft Taco (89¢) and Grilled Chicken Burrito (89¢)

First, the Grilled Chicken Soft Taco.  As I said, you cannot beat the value on this one.  The taste is pretty damn good too.  I got mine “Fresco Style”, which means that they subtracted cheese and added fiesta salsa.  This will save you quite a few calories.  As for the other toppings, it included the grilled chicken (obviously) and lettuce.  The grilled chicken was obviously seasoned too, so it had a nice little kick.  As you can see from the picture below, Taco Bell is definitely not shy when it comes to adding their toppings on this one.  When coupled with the small tortilla shell, this one overflows with ingredients and taste.  It clocks in at roughly 200 calories when made with cheese, but that is substantially less when you get it Fresco Style (the actual caloric difference is not available on the website).

Next, I had the Grilled Chicken burrito.  I got this one in the regular style, so it included the cheese.  It also included the seasoned grilled chicken (again, obviously), mexican rice and and avocado ranch sauce.  On this one, I have no complaints about the ingredients as they were tasty, but Taco Bell really needs to find a different tortilla to use for this burrito.  As you can see from my picture below where I’ve opened it up to show the insides, the tortilla dwarfs the amount of ingredients that are in the burrito.  When I was eating this, I felt like I was eating a giant tortilla with just a few ingredients sprinkled in to compliment the flavor of the tortilla.  It should be the other way around.   In an ideal world, they’d find a tortilla shell that was somewhere between the size of the one they use for the soft taco and the size of the one that they use for this one.  Also, this baby checks in at 440 calories, so it’s not exactly healthy.

Grilled Chicken Burrito

Would I Buy It Again:  Yes to the Grilled Chicken Soft Taco but probably not to the Grilled Chicken Burrito.  The soft taco is healthy enough and overflows with ingredients, so it is definitely worth another purchase.  As for the burrito, if I wanted to eat a giant tortilla, I’d just go to the grocery store and buy a package of big tortilla shells and munch on those.  Plus, the huge caloric intake on this one does not help my wellness score.

  1. Wow…that taco is packed and that burrito is sadly not. I’ve been meaning to try these two new value menu items. Tough to pass up at 89cents. I’m extra curious now to see what I get…when I do, I’ll link back to this review so people can see if there are any major differences. From the looks of those pics, doubling up on the taco seems to be the move.

  2. Haha – “As for the burrito, if I wanted to eat a giant tortilla, I’d just go to the grocery store and buy a package of big tortilla shells and munch on those.”

Great review. That soft taco looks fab for TB! …sadly the burrito looks to be on par with what you normally get from them. Damn you Taco Bell burrito fillers (I think they just follow the signs, 1 scoop o’ this, 1 scoop o’ that). Anyone ever worked at TB and know how the line works?

I must say, TB is my ALL-TIME favorite fast food joint. I may have asked you before but what’s your favorite?

  3. Hmmm…I’m not sure I could even rank one particular place as a favorite. I would say that those that would be in contention would be Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Arby’s and Rally’s. Ultimately, my “favorite” really depends on what I’m feeling that day.

  4. @ Ryan, looking forward to your review. Let TB know what is up with that burrito when you are there this week!

@ Bear, Never worked the line there, but it seems like you have the program down pat, scoop there, scoop here… As far as favorite fast food, I would have to say McDonald’s. Best Fries, best fountain drinks and classic burgers. I would agree with Eater though, it depends on my mood. TB, Hardee’s, Arby’s, Penn Station are right up there too.

  5. Thanks for the review.

This actually looks like the best combo if cheap and healthy of any fast food place I have seen. I shall be trying this!

  9. Is there a diffrence between a Chicken Ranchero Soft Taco on the (Fresco Menu) and tne new 89cent Chicken Soft Taco (made fersco style)… is there a Ranchero sauce added to the Ranchero Taco for $1.79… If there is, I wonder how many calories the Ranchero Saice is worth??????

  10. According to the website, there is no difference between the two when they both are made Fresco style (Fresco style does not include the Ranchero sauce on the Ranchero soft taco). So, it appears the only difference is about 90 cents and you are getting the same thing, although the grilled soft taco is slightly fattier (grams not calories).

If you want to see more, take a look at Taco Bell’s nutrition calculator at http://www.tacobell.com/nutrition/calculator/ and you can play around with all sorts of stuff.

  11. [...] Eater already did a Review on this, but since it was new, I thought that I would give it a try at my closest Taco Bell.  He [...]

  13. I worked at taco bell years ago when i was a teenager. They have “how to” instructions with pictures all over that place…..there is a small long handle thing for meat, and small scoop spoons for chicken and steak…your sour cream is in a caulkin type dispenser. usually on a standard taco you get one scoop of beef “three fingers” lettuce and “two fingers” cheese…Honestly we made the food the way we would want to eat it….so needless to say our customers on night shift got HUGE amounts..haha..no wonder we were always busy!

  14. The difference between the Ranchero taco and the value taco is the chicken meat used.

To put it bluntly, you get good meat with the expensive one, and mystery chicken meat with the value menu.

However, they do a great job of making the mystery chicken meat appear palatable.
