Culver’s ButterBurgers and Frozen Custard

370 restaurants, 17 states.

Open in Wisconsin in 1984, Culver’s hit Indiana about 4 years ago.  Slow to catch on in the beginning, but most of the time I go, it is packed.  Their menu has everything from fried chicken, fish sandwich. ruebens, salads, pot roast, and fried chicken.

My aunt from San Francisco loves this place and we ran a 1/2 marathon the day before, so we deserved this?!

What I Ate: The Culver’s Deluxe, Double.  Price for the combo was $6.19.

The deluxe has lettuce, red onion, tomato, pickle, mayo.  The double gives you two pattys and two slices of cheese.  Beef is never frozen.   All toppings are on the bottom, which I usually bitch about, but starting to enjoy that setup.  They seem fresh and crispy, though I thought the tomato was a little skimpy.  I held the mayo today and I didn’t miss it at all.

The patties are thin and have a little crust to them as well.  A double is a perfect size.  It’s about 4 hours later and I might skip dinner tonight.  This is not a greasy burger, one napkin will get it through it.

Crinkle cut fries and Culver’s own Root Beer finish out the meal.  Fries were hot and fresh.

Would I Buy It Again? Yes and it will make my recommended chain restaurant list.  Tempted to put it on the hall of fame.  This burger is far better than a fast food combo like Burger King’s Steakhouse XT.  The toppings are very standard, but it is one of the better fast food/fast casual burgers you can sink your teeth into.  It is in my top 5 burgers in Indiana and that is saying a lot.

Oh yeah, I didn’t even talk about the frozen custard either?!  Yum.

  1. Hall o’ fame, WOW! Looks like you don’t need to run 13.1k to “deserve” this :)

Good looking burger…so how was the custard?

  2. I had a Five Guys burger to celebrate 13.1 miles. But now my mouth is watering for a ButterBurger. I can’t use the race as an excuse to eat unlimted burger, though!

  3. For custard, it is pretty good. Not a big fan of frozen custard though. My aunt that lives in CA said that she would swap In N Out for Culvers anyday. It’s a really good burger.

  4. Not a big fan of custard!?! …and here I thought you were a good eater :P Just teasing….but I don’t think I’ve ever come across a frozen custard I didn’t like…I’m pretty easy going on most sweets…I don’t eat them much so when I do they seem amazing. Even a good ol’ McD’s soft serve sundae…mmmmmmm.

  5. I am usually pretty good with ice cream and everything related, but I like frozed yogurt better than custard. I like the soft serve from McDonalds more than I like to admit at times. The sundae and the cheap cone are pretty good. However, I am not that big of a fan of the McFlurry. Go figure.

  6. I’ve only been to Culver’s once, but it was VERY good!

  7. Says who?

  8. Man oh man, I have been wanting to try Culver’s for some time now. There’s just something about “Butter Burger” that sounds delicious.

  10. Culver’s is awesome! Since it’s close and has a drive-through, we get it fairly often. Try some of the other sandwiches, too. The Reuben is really good, as is the Grilled Ham and Cheese. And the Tenderloin is decent too.

Oh, and did I mention the Onion Rings and Fried Cheese Curds? Heaven.

    Yummmmmmm.

  11. I have to agree that Culvers is a couple of notches above your typical fast food chain. I eat there at least once a month and I really enjoy it. I’m sure your aunt is a sweet lady but while I like Culvers a lot, it is not on the same level as In n Out

  12. Culver’s over the past 6 months has moved up to the top of my list of better burger places. The burger has more of a grilled taste that 5 Guys and their fries do not compare to the crinkle fries at Culver’s. Regardless, when I think of a good burger, I can only wish In N Out would come to the midwest.

  13. What did you think of Culver’s root beer? I thought it was awful when I tried it. Maybe it was just an off day, though…

  14. Its pretty bad, not a fan of their root beer. Type in “Carlson’s” on the search function, they hand make their own Root Beer and it is awesome. 3 hour car ride form Indy though. :(

  15. Culver’s food is so hot, I received a cup of green beans that the bottom of the container became melted, nad I received second degree burns from the 150 degree juice from the cup. I will never go to a Culver’s again.

  16. [...] That looks awful and awesomely appealing at the same time. Apparently butter burgers are a Wisconsin favorite, and have been made famous by a place called Culver’s. Check out a review of these burgers from Would I Buy It Again? [...]

  17. Culvers is the best!

  19. If the burger is so good why is it seasoned and buttered??? Really, great or good meat doesn’t need anything added to it most of the time. Why would you put anything between average at best bread/buns. Really the buns are just a little better than wonder bread. Also the tenderloin is bearly one, its a brodie, if you love tenderloins you’ll understand.

  20. Just an old Maui Boy says:
  21. Big thumbs up to the Butter Burger! I’ve only had it one time, but that was enough – it ranked right up there with some of the best burgers I’ve had. Juicy, flavorful, it was just right. I’ve had some good burgers over the years and would absolutely put the Butter Burger in the top 5. As much as anything, I’m blown away by the fact that you can get it at a “fast food” place. Wish we had a Culver’s around here, now I’m hungry…….

  22. A bit pricey…the crispy little edges of the meat is good and cheese curds are good as well, not sure about custard. Pretty good service at the ones I have gone to. I would/will go again
