Carlson’s Drive In
118 W. Coolspring Ave.
Michigan City, IN 46360
www.carlsonsdrive-in.com

It has been a Michigan City tradition for over 60 years.  I took a trip to enjoy Lake Michigan, Blue Chip Casino and to enjoy some of my past food favorites.

What I Ate: 2 Chili Cheese Dogs $2.35 ea., Large Root Beer $1.50, Fried Mushrooms $2.15

Carlson’s serves Eckrich hot dogs. Nothing fancy going on here. There is an emphasis on quality and local ingredients. The hook to the chili cheese dogs here is Cheese Whiz. As odd as it sounds, I hate shredded cheddar on a cc-dog, it has to be whiz. Root Beer is made in house. It’s a touch sweet at times, but in a frosty mug… you just can’t beat it. It is a shack of a hot dog stand, I still wonder where they make the root beer? I keep ordering fried mushrooms here, but honestly…they are not very good. I am sure they are bought in, but I wanted a little bit of fried something with my dogs.

Would I Buy It Again? Yes.  Recommended. This is the type of place you can see Jack and Diane at before hitting the Tasty Freeze. The kind of place that the winning tee ball team goes to. Is the food awesome? Eh, but it is pretty good.  They have been packing them in for years here.

All at once, Carlson’s serves up a great hot dog, a cold mug of root beer and a side of Hoosier nostalgia.

  1. I’m going to be up in that area in about 3 weeks, and I’m a sucker for a good hot dog! I’ll give this place a try!

  2. Hehe :) Awesome! “This is the type of place you can see Jack and Diane at before hitting the Tasty Freeze.”

That place looks cool….cool like in a kinda “High School” hangout cool.

  3. That chili dog looks good…piled on the diced onion I see…I respect that. I recently went to a place in Towson, MD called Burger Bros. and along with a burger I got a hot dog. Love a good hot dog…especially when you can find it at a burger joint. Relish and mustard. Yum…

  4. This is my FAVE M.C. food stop. I make WIBIA pretty much go there upon arrival….and if we can stop there twice over the weekend even better! As he would say i completely “dig it” here.

  5. @CurlyFry – I must say….you guys are awesome. I just hope to have a relationship like yours…..and a woman that sounds as cool :)
