Cinnamon Rolls

As has been said here before, I’ve lost over 150 pounds over the past few years and because of that, I’m always looking for ways to cut calories on normal foods so that I don’t have to adjust my diet so that I have to eat rice cakes for every meal.  When I stumbled across this quick, easy and CHEAP recipe for low calorie cinnamon rolls on television the other day, I couldn’t resist.  I tweaked it ever so slightly (removed the butter spread and didn’t add the icing…it doesn’t need either of them).

This recipe can be made for less than $2.50 (depending on what brand of crescent roll dough you buy) and here’s what you’ll need:

16 oz. of reduced fat crescent rolls refrigerated dough
16 sprays of no calorie butter spray (I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter, for example)
1/4 cup of dark brown sugar
1/4 cup of no calorie sweetener (Splenda, for example)
1 1/2 teaspoons of cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon of salt

The primary cost driver in this recipe is the crescent roll dough.  I got two eight ounce tubes of Meijer brand roll dough for 94¢ each.  The remaining cost was the conglomeration of the seasonings.

It’s easy to make.  All you do is roll the crescent roll dough into a ball and then use a rolling pin to spread it out into a flat rectangular sheet (roughly 8 x 12 inches).  Spray the sixteen sprays of butter spray evenly onto the dough and then spread out the seasonings evenly.  Roll the dough the long way into a log roll and pinch the ends to prevent spillage.  Cut the log roll into eight separate pieces and place flat side down on a baking sheet (use non-stick spray on the baking sheet).  Cover with foil and bake for eight minutes at 375 degrees.  After eight minutes, remove the foil and bake for another five-ish minutes until the rolls rise and are golden brown on top and then remove from the oven.  If you eat these things warm, you’ll immediately fall in love (they also keep in the refrigerator overnight and taste EXCELLENT if you microwave them for ninety seconds).

This recipe took me less than 25 minutes to prepare (including oven time; actual prep time was less than ten minutes) and each roll was less than 110 calories.   Give it a shot if you’ve ever got a craving for a classic guilty pleasure done in a semi-healthy way!

  1. Whoa…you lost over 150lbs!!! That is awesome. That’s almost an entire me! I applaud that feat. Nice post…those rolls look pretty good even without being drenched in icing. Mmmm…brown sugar and cinammon. Now I’m rethinking what is currently in front of me…oatmeal and a cup of strawberries. Damn you Indiannapoliseater!!!

  2. Dang!!! 150 lbs! I had no idea. I’ve lost around 120. How’d you do it? Do you have any before & after photos?

That’s awesome! Congrats and good job :)

  3. I’ve got a before picture and I’ll try to come up with an after picture sometime later since I don’t have anything here on my computer at work.

As for how I did it, just diet changes (slightly) and exercise (a ton). Congrats on your loss too!

  4. I’ve seen you Bear and you can’t be more than like 140 pounds right now…Let’s see the old Bear at 260. That’s nuts. Congrats though…that’s awesome, both of you. What are your weaknesses food-wise? Mine are brownies and doritos. They don’t stand a chance if I’m nearby. My will power used to be so strong but now it’s weak and I’m trying to get back into better shape. I still run and play hockey but as you know…I GRUB HARD!!!

  5. Beer, chicken wings and fast food to soak up a hangover. Other than that, I can usually hold true to eating healthily.

  6. I would like to see the old Bear at 260!
Weaknesses: Chocolate Chip Cookies from Paradise Bakery, Oreo Cookies and Milk, Tacos, Mac & Cheese, Chili Cheese Dogs. I am sure there are a few more!

  7. Oh yeah, italian food is a weakness too. I could eat it for every meal.

  8. Okay….here’s the Fat Bear:

    And Skinny Bear:

I lost it with a lot of activity.

I run every day now, I have to…it’s almost like food and sleep to me now. Also really really healthy eating. Most of my comments about food now are about past experiences…I don’t really eat this stuff any more.

Weakness….ANY food whatsoever…seriously…I have the largest appetite:

I seriously feel like I could eat non-stop. That’s why I eat mostly vegetables now. That way I can eat as much as I want and not gain weight.

My favorite things are peanut butter (anything, PB&J, Reese’s….), soft serve ice cream, Taco Bell, Mac & Cheese….really anything though.

  9. Nice work Bear! I want to run B2b someday, it looks like good times.

  10. Wow. Just Wow. Awesome. I’ve been on bearsilber.com for a while…now i feel like we’re brothers. haha.

  11. @Ryan – Haha, there’s a lot up there….I wish I updated it more. It’s usually just after a big event or something. Glad you enjoy it :)
