Also downtown and at Indianapolis International Airport.
An Indiana tradition for the last 105 years. Look at any Indy travel guide and it will tell you to stop by. Old school cafeteria line with all the standards present. During his presidential campaign, Giuliani stopped by and said this reminds him of a NY Deli and it is the real deal. Take that for what it is worth.
What I Ate: Corned Beef on Rye, Deli Mustard. $10.50
It’s a huge sandwich, but I have no problem throwing it down. It is one of those meals that you can eat at 3:00 and skip dinner.
There is an emphasis on quality here and the corned beef is stacked to be presentation friendly. The meat is far superior to McAllister’s or any chain selling Reubens or any variation of a corned beef sandwich.
The rye is awesome. It’s a solid hunk of bread. Soft on the inside and a nice crispy crust. If corned beef was Batman, the Rye would be Robin.
Would I Buy It Again? Yes. The Corned Beef and Pastrami are the two sandwiches to get. The sides and entrees at Shapiro’s are down right awful, stay away at all costs. The bakery section has wonderful cakes and pies.

I love your reviews! Although I would never come close to eating many of the items you’ve enjoyed, I appreciate what you have to say. I’ve never been to Shapiro’s…it’s one of those places I know exists, but I just never seem to get there.
A new deli just opened up in my neck of the woods: Stanley’s Deli (86th and Ditch).
I saw that you already reviewed it…keep up the good work!
Well thanks, I think! Stanley’s was ok, but I owe them a revisit as he was kind enough to write on the site and let us know what is going on and how they are improving. Check the review archive for places that you might actually go. We are launching a new segment tomorrow as well, so good stuff there. Even if you are not a fast food fan, you will have a ton of reasons to visit the site!
Glad that you like it, tell your friends etc…
I have to say that while I do think Shapiro’s makes a good sandwich, it wasn’t as good as what I expected. I think it was one of those situations where everybody had told me that they have the best and when I went there I just left wanting a bigger sandwich. Even at Stanley’s I am tempted usually to get extra meat on the sandwich. Both are good sandwiches though. I think my favorite is Stanley’s…..but ask me again in a month
thanks for checking out my blog!!
I think that Shapiro’s tops all the other deli’s I’ve been to in the past ten or twelve years. You cannot find a better corned beef sandwich anywhere. The sides are the best. You can tell why these guys are here for so long and to stay for good. There is no better Deli than Shapiro’s not even in New York.
Shaprios is awesome. I’m going to have to say that the reuben is the sandwich to get and that the maccaroni is good, as are the potato pancakes. (latke)
