What I Ate:  Ribs and Pulled Pork Texas size combo meal (comes with two sides; side items were steak fries and side salad) $12.99

It’s been a while since I’ve been to Texas Roadhouse, but I had a craving for barbeque and since there are not a lot of good barbeque joints in town, I figured I’d give this chain restaurant a shot.

First the ribs…let me just say this:  they were OUTSTANDING.  The meat was tender and basically fell off the bone.  I like to consider myself a rib connoisseur and I can honestly say that these were the best ribs I have had in quite some time.   They came slathered in a sauce that tasted a little bit toward the sweet side of the spectrum (similar to a store brand like Open Pit or Sweet Baby Ray’s, but without the kick that Sweet Baby Ray’s packs at the end), but that did not detract from them at all.  One problem I’ve always had with ribs is they can sometime have too much of a smokey flavor and be overwhelmed by that flavor, but these ribs were just right.

I’ve never been a real big pulled pork guy, but I didn’t feel like chicken as the other meat in my combo, so I figured what the hell.  It is a decision that I do not regret one bit.  Texas Roadhouse’s pulled pork was (served without a bun) was also outstanding.  Not as good as the ribs, but pretty darn close.  Perfectly tender and not dry at all.  It also came slathered in the same sauce as the ribs and it was the perfect compliment.

It always seems silly to spend any time talking about a side item, but in the case of the steak fries I was served, I have to complain.  They were soggy and somewhat cold.  It didn’t ruin my meal by any means but it was kind of a minor annoyance.

Would I Buy It AgainHell yes, I would definitely go again.  As I said, good barbeque is hard to find in this town and I’ll definitely go to any place that can provide it to me.  It was a little bit on the expensive side for a lunch, but it was worth it.

Instead? I don’t that there is an instead for this one.  Texas Roadhouse was just perfect.  There are other barbeque joints in town like Squealer’s and Famous Dave’s, but I would put Texas Roadhouse above both of them with Famous Dave’s a close second.

  1. This review made me crave bbq. Thanks! :) But I can’t compare our “not a chain” bbq restaurants alongside of Famous Dave’s – because…

We have a Famous Dave’s where we live and I have to say growing up in the south [and I'm still here] FDs doesn’t do bbq justice and their sides all taste the same – FDs seems to add the same seasoning to everything [garlic, maybe? overwhelming imo] but the low quality bbq and poor sides were a turn off the three times we attempted it.

It was an overpriced chain joint as far as we were concerned – we will happily just drive down the road a bit to our local favs.

  2. Sadly, that’s not a good option for us in Indianapolis. Inexplicably, this town really lacks good local barbecue joints.

  3. Have to agree …. been saying for years Roadhouse has the best ribs I’ve ever had.

  4. Have you had Shelby Street Smokehouse in Fountain Square? It’s my favorite barbecue place in town by far.

  5. I have. I went there pre-blog and it was good for sure. I will make it back sooner than later. It is my choice restaurant by Radio Radio.
